DEATHS

At Springbank, Sheuchan, on the 24th ult., Agnes Park, wife of Mr James M’Ewen. At Genoch, on the 28th ult., Mr James M’Douall, farmer, aged 68 years – very suddenly. At Artfield, of , on the 30th ult., Mr William M’Clure, farmer there, aged 76 years – much regretted. At Allandoo, parish of ,on the 29th ultimo, Margaret, second daughter of Mr M’William, farmer there, aged 14 years. At Kildonnan, parish of , on the 22d ult., Janet, daughter of Mr James M’Caig. At House, parish of Stoneykirk, on the 25th ult., Agnes M’Culloch, aged 98. Deceased was in possession of her faculties, and able to walk about on the day before her death. She had been a servant about the place for half a century. At Grennan, , on the 2d inst., much regretted, William, fourth son of Mr Milroy, farmer there, aged 23 years. On the 28th ult., at Colebrook-row, Islington, Mr Robert M’Culloch, in his 81st year, seventh son of the late David M’Culloch, Esq., of Ardwall, in the Stewartry of , N.B. At Crocketford, on the 27th ult., Mr Thomas Cowan, innkeeper – much regretted. At 24 Higher Temple Street, Manchester, on the evening of the 25th ult., Agnes, wife of Mr James Bradshaw – after bearing a long illness with a meekness and resignation which denote the true Christian. She lived beloved and died lamented by a large circle of friends and acquaintances.

At Glasgow, on the 19th inst., after a short illness, Grace Cumming, wife of Mr Hugh M’William, engineer, She was a native of Portpatrick, and was married only about seven weeks ago. Her death is much lamented by her friends and acquaintance. At Drumore, on the 20th inst., Jane M’Gaw, age 80 years, relict of Mr John Cairnie, Cardrain. At St. Helena, Old Luce, on the 20th inst., Mr John Bailie, aged 77 years. At Barrhill, on the 20th inst., Elizabeth, daughter of the late Mr George Murray. At Bennan, near Girvan, on the 12th inst., Mr William Baird, surgeon, for a number of years medical practitioner in Gatehouse-of-Fleet. At sea, going round Cape Horn of brain fever, on the 2d September last, Mr Adam Mackie, of Irvine, aged 31, captain of the barque Raymond, of Liverpool – deeply and extensively regretted.

Young, mason, aged 58 years – after a tedious illness borne with calm resignation to the Divine will. At Slock, parish of Kirkmaiden, on the 18th ult., Garlies Milligan, in the 19th year of his age, a very promising young man. At Stanhope street, London, on the 23d instant, Alexander Hope Affleck, accountant, in the 33d year of his age, only son of the late Mr Joseph Affleck, Markfast, parish of Urr. At the house of her brother, 2 Manor Street, Ardwick, Manchester, Jane, second daughter of the late Captain James Kerr, of Garliestown. Here, this morning, at Sheuchan Street, Mr Peter M’Haffie, mariner, in the 66th year of his age. Friends at a distance will please accept of this intimation. At Thornbank, parish of Stoneykirk, on the 2d inst., Janet Wylie, relict of Mr Thomas M’Master, in the 84th year of her age. It is worthy of remark that this is the first death in the family of the late Wm. Wylie, who died at Bridgebank in 1819. He had six of a family, who were all living till Saturday last. The eldest is now 86, and the youngest nearly 76; their united ages amount to 485 years, or an average of nearly 81 years each. The bodily constitution of the above family was not above mediocrity; but it may be shortly stated that temperance in all things was, and is their predominant characteristic – a lesson to all to follow in the same laudable course, that their days may be long in the land. At Tonnochrae, on the 29th ult., Margaret Rankin, wife of Francis Anderson, shoemaker, aged 33 – much regretted by all who knew her. At Glenluce, on the 5th inst., Mr John Hannah, late innkeeper, aged 73 years – after a long and painful trouble. At Barracks, Simniness, Old Luce, Mrs Lockhart, pauper, aged 88 years. At Barsianow, parish of Stoneykirk, on the 5th inst., Mrs M’Culloch, wife of Mr R. M’Culloch, formerly tenant of Auchleach – advanced in years. At Stonedge, near Hawick, on the 28th ultimo, after about an hour’s illness, Mr John Thorburn, farmer there, aged 70 years, father of the Rev. John Thorburn, U.P. Church, Gatehouse-of-Fleet. At Gatehouse, on the 28th ult., James Davidson, aged 68 years – for the last 47 years in employment at the Murray Arms Inn there.

Here, at Castle Street, on the 8th inst., suddenly, Mr J. Craig, watchmaker. Suddenly, at Newton-Stewart, on the 8th inst., Mr John Neilson, mason, aged 43 years. Drowned, off Folkstone, on board the “Josephine Willis,” in the collision with the steam-ship Mangerton, on the evening of the 3d inst., Andrew Hastings, Logan, aged 12 years and 6 months, grandson of the late Andrew Dick, Esq., of Moorbrock. At Kirkcudbright, on the 5th inst., John, infant son of Dr. Johnstone, aged 10 months. At Culnaightry, in the parish of Rerrick, on the 1st curt., John M’Taggart, Esq., formerly of Manchester, in the 62d year of his age.

DEATHS

On the 3d inst., at Queen Street, Stranraer, in the 35th year of his age, James Gartly, of H.M. 42d regiment of foot. Deceased had served in the Crimea, and shared in the battle of the Alma, but, from exposure to cold and wet, was seized with fever and ague, in consequence of which he was rendered unfit for further active service, and finally returned to his native country – to die. On the 29th ult., at Portwilliam, Mr Robert M’Master, formerly blacksmith, aged 70 years. On the 21st ult., at Ballantrae, Robert, eldest son of the late Mr John M’Leod, merchant. On the 5th inst., at Old Penningham, Newton-Stewart, Mr Samuel Gordon, aged 66 years. On the 22d ultimo, at Port-Glasgow, after a protracted illness, borne with much Christian patience and resignation, aged 30 years, Isabella Lyburn, wife of Mr Robert Legget, joiner. Here, at Greenvale Street, on the 14th instant, after a protracted illness, Charles, aged 21 years, second son of Mr James M’Intyre, late farmer in Northpark, parish of Kirkcolm. Here, at Hanover Street, on the 18th instant, in the 79th year of his age, Mr Peter Campbell, late crofter in Airies, parish of Kirkcolm. Up to Martinmas last the deceased had never slept a single night out of Kirkcolm. The farthest journey ever he made was once to Wigtown, on which occasion, he travelled all night, rather than sleep out of the parish of a long line of ancestors. His general character was that of a pious, honest, inoffensive man. At Portwilliam, on the 13th instant, Mr William Wither, teacher, and inspector of the poor for Mochrum, aged 48 years. Friends at a distance will please accept of this intimation. At Drumuckloch, parish of , on the 8th inst., Jane Henderson, widow of the late Mr James Brown, farmer there. At , on the 7th instant, James Corrie, surgeon, aged 50 years. On the 13th inst, at Manchester, aged 21 years, Mr Andrew Wales, Jun., Lintmill, Glenluce. He was a young man of superior abilities, and was lately promoted in his office on account of his worth and steady habits. His death is much regretted by all who knew him. The remains of the deceased were interred in the churchyard of Glenluce on the 19th inst., At Rispain, Whithorn, on the 29th ult., Mr R. S. Carson, farmer there, aged 56, much and justly regretted by a wide circle of friends. His loss creates a blank which will not be easily filled up.

OBITUARY

DEATH OF GEORGE KING, ESQ. – We are sorry to record in our obituary to-day the death of Mr King, of the Commercial Hotel here, at the age of 52 years. He died calmly and peaceably last night at half-past eight o’clock. He for some time back has been afflicted with an asthmatic complaint, and lately suffered the rupture of one of the blood vessels. At last Municipal election here Mr King was chosen one of the Town Council, and was much respected by all classes.

DEATH OF FATHER MATHEW – Father Mathew, the great temperance apostle, died on Monday at half- past two o’clock, at his lodgings at Queenstown. DEATH OF CHARLES LAMB, ESQ. – At his shooting quarters in the Highlands, Mr Lamb died on Thursday. He was the only son of Sir Charles Lamb, of Beanfort, Sussex, and half-brother of the Earl of Eglinton, who had gone north on this melancholy occasion.
