  • La Raíz Rota De Arturo Barea: Destiempo Ficcionalizado Y Autobiografía Figurada
Acta Universitatis Wratislaviensis No 3837 ESTUDIOS HISPÁNICOS XXVI .

  • Juncker, Clara, "John Dos Passos in Spain,"
JOHN DOS PASSOS IN SPAIN CLARA JUNCKER University of Southern Denmark [email protected] 91 In 1931, Ernest Hemingway wrote to John Dos Passos from Madrid: “You are the great writer of Spain” (Baker 1968: 342). The two friends both knew Spain, but Dos Passos got there first. After graduating from Harvard, Dos Passos studied Spanish language, literature and culture at the Centro de Estudios Históricos in Madrid in 1916-17, and he returned for almost eight months in 1918-19 (Carr 1984: 101-102). For six weeks he walked with his friend Dudley Moore across the Basque Provinces before returning to Madrid, where he wrote his war novel Three Soldiers (1921). In his first Spanish book, Rosinante to the Road Again (1922), Telemachus and his bawdy companion, Lyaeus, ramble along Spanish roads in search of “the gesture”, the essence of Spanish life that the Dos Passos persona hoped to emulate in words. Spain would remain important to both Dos Passos and Hemingway, from 1924 when they planned a hiking trip from Burguete to Andorra, to other times, as when Hemingway explored Zaragoza during the feria and Our Lady of the Pillar festivities in 1926. He used the railway station there in “Hills Like White Elephants” (1927) and would compare both Africa and Wyoming to Aragón in his works. Angel Capellán writes in Hemingway and the Hispanic World (1985) that “Aragón had become an integral part of his accumulated memories of Spanish landscapes” (33). In 1937, Dos Passos and Hemingway collaborated with Joris Ivens on the documentary The Spanish Earth .

  • Spanish Military Cultures and the Moroccan Wars, 1909–36
02_Articles 30/3 6/6/00 10:16 am Page 307 Sebastian Balfour and Pablo La Porte Spanish Military Cultures and the Moroccan Wars, 1909–36 Introduction The deepest roots of military ideology in Spain in the first half of the twentieth century lay in the grievances resulting from the defeat of the armed forces in the Spanish–American War of 1898 and the consequent loss of the remnants of the overseas Empire. Whilst public opinion blamed the 1898 Disaster largely on the military, many officers felt they had been sacrificed by the politi- cians of the Restoration regime in order to ensure that it would survive the loss of empire.1 When the army rose in revolt in 1923, the Disaster was the main backdrop to their self-justifications. The first words of General Primo de Rivera’s manifesto on his seizure of power referred to the ‘picture of misfortunes and immoralities’ that had begun in 1898.2 Nine years later, General Sanjurjo, remembering the moment when as a young lieutenant he had lowered the Spanish flag for the last time in Cuba, declared to a journalist shortly after the failure of his attempt to seize power in August 1932: ‘All my life seems of little conse- quence next to the desire to make up for the Spanish ’98.’3 In the novel Raza, Francisco Franco saw continuity between himself and the aggrieved admiral of the Spanish fleet sunk off the coast of Cuba.4 For the new dictator, the military insurrection of 1936 was the final revenge for the apparent injustice done to the mili- tary in 1898.

  • Photographs of Child Victims in Propaganda Posters of the Spanish Civil War
Bloomfield, I 2018 Photographs of Child Victims in Propaganda Posters of the Spanish Civil War. Modern Languages Open, 2018(1): 16, pp. 1–15, DOI: https://doi.org/10.3828/mlo.v0i0.178 ARTICLE Photographs of Child Victims in Propaganda Posters of the Spanish Civil War Imogen Bloomfield University of Hull, GB [email protected] This article examines propaganda posters from the Spanish Civil War that used photographs of child victims in an attempt to galvanise support for the Republican war effort. Rather than discus the efficacy of these posters as persuasive tools, this analysis focuses on their suitability to support propagandistic narratives of the Civil War, which would form and support ‘usable pasts’ for collectives – understandings of the past that serve a function in the present – such as identity claims, or the basis of demands for justice. In this instance the photographic discourses of these posters supported broader narratives of the Civil War. The use of child subjects afforded narrative flexibility to the photographs employed in these posters, and this was combined with the supposed veracity of the photographic medium, and the ingrained norms of familial photography – that taken of and by family members – to construct narratives with propagandistic value. Please note: This article contains graphic images of child death. Regarding War To set aside the sympathy we extend to others beset by war and murderous politics for a reflection on how our privileges are located on the same map as their suffering, and may – in ways we might prefer not to imagine – be linked to their suffering […] is a task for which the painful, stirring images supply only an initial spark.
