GETTING AROUND IN ROME The city centre is a fabulously beautiful place and meandering through its streets exploring for yourself can be one of life's most delightful pastimes. The Rome Metro has just two lines intersecting at Rome's Termini Station. Although limited, it’s worth using where you can as it’s by far quicker than any surface transport. Rome’s busses are very comprehensive and frequent. For further information on route planning on the Underground, fare costs and maps please see www.atac.roma.it. The busses: Public buses run a very comprehensive and frequent system running from about 05:30 hrs to midnight daily. These bus services are supplemented by night services that run all night along the core routes. In general, the busses are used for very short journeys and as a feeder service to the metro and train networks and will often find you have a wide choice of routes going where you need to, especially in the town centre. The metro: the system has just two lines named A and B, the lines intersect at Rome Termini Station, the main public transport hub in Rome. The metro misses much of the city centre; however, there are stations next to the Coliseum / Roman Forum and Spanish Steps and within 5 minutes’ walk of the Vatican. Tickets / fares: All local public transport is integrated in Rome and tickets must be purchased before you board any public transport in Rome. Tickets for both the bus system and metro can be purchased from tobacconists, coffee bars, or vending machines at metro stations and major bus stops. Tickets cost € 1.00 for one Metro ride or 75 minutes on all buses or € 4.00 for a daily ticket, valid for unlimited metro, bus, and train travel within Rome. AIRPORT TRANSFERS Book airport transfers in Rome to / from Expat Explore’s accommodation, before or after your tour; these cost €12 per person to / from Fiumicino Airport and €13 per person to / from Ciampino Airport for a single journey. • Britsh Group Terravision Renovates the Perilous Balcony of Piazzale Winston Churchill in Villa Borghese
BRITSH GROUP TERRAVISION RENOVATES THE PERILOUS BALCONY OF PIAZZALE WINSTON CHURCHILL IN VILLA BORGHESE Unveiling ceremony taking place on Friday December 12 at 11:30 in the presence of the British Ambassador in Rome. To commemorate the 140th anniversary of the birth of Sir Winston Churchill (Woodstock, November 30th 1874 - London, January 24th 1965), Terravision Group has restored the historic balcony in the Roman piazza named after the English statesman and Nobel Prize winner, located in front of the British School at Rome in Villa Borghese. After collapsing in 2010 and having been left in total abandonment, the balcony in Piazzale Winston Churchill had been covered with tarps, wooden boards and scaffolding tubes. Left in these conditions for years, it had become a symbol of neglect and decay in Rome in addition to being a safety hazard for pedestrians and drivers. The balcony’s parapet, artistically created in travertine in 1911 for the fiftieth anniversary of the Unification of Italy, delineates the panoramic view offered from the balcony situated between the Faculty of Architecture and the National Gallery of Modern Art - a passageway constantly full of university students and patrons of the nearby international cultural institutes. The British Group Terravision is the European leader in airport transfers, offering shuttle services connecting Europe’s main airports to their respective city centres. The group is present in 40 airports across seven European countries, transports 5 million passengers annually, employs 400 people and, in 2013, generated a turnover of 35 million Euro. In Italy, Terravision, together with Assolowcost, has created an innovative tourism project called “Thaz Italia” spanning across Italy’s historic town centres.

  • The Decorated North Wall in the Tomb of Tutankhamun (Kv 62)
AMARNA ROYAL TOMBS PROJECT VALLEY OF THE KINGS Occasional Paper No. 3 THE DECORATED NORTH WALL IN THE TOMB OF TUTANKHAMUN (KV 62) (THE BURIAL OF NEFERTITI? II) By Nicholas Reeves, FSA With A Review of the Geophysical Data By George Ballard, FRICS THE DECORATED NORTH WALL IN THE TOMB OF TUTANKHAMUN (KV 62) (THE BURIAL OF NEFERTITI? II) ABSTRACT This paper revisits an earlier discussion, The Burial of Nefertiti? (ARTP Occasional Paper No. 1), to consider in greater detail the painted north wall in the Burial Chamber (room J) of Tutankhamun’s tomb (KV 62). The changes imposed upon this wall’s three separate scenes are here identified and analysed, and the conclusions found to support the view that KV 62 – architecturally the sepulchre of a queen – had been both intended and employed for the burial of Nefertiti in her capacity as Akhenaten’s heir, Smenkhkare-djeserkheperu. The manner in which this tomb’s outer chambers were adapted and pressed into service for Tutankhamun’s use a decade later – leaving its original occupant in place and undisturbed – is clearly established. In a supplement to this study, George Ballard – a leading authority on the use of radar and other remote-sensing technologies in the investigation of historic buildings and structures – provides an independent review of the principal geophysical investigations carried out within and around KV 62 since 2015. Contrary to earlier assessments, Ballard is able to conclude that the data collected is both broadly consistent and essentially in line with archaeological indicators and expectations. Nicholas Reeves, BA PhD FSA, is an archaeologist and Egyptologist, Director of the Amarna Royal Tombs Project, Valley of the Kings, and a senior associate of the University of Arizona Egyptian Expedition.

  • If You Fly Into Rome: If You Fly Into Pisa: If You Fly Into Milan
If you fly into Rome: Arriving in Rome is usually a few hundred dollars cheaper than flying into Florence, and the train ride from Rome to Florence will treat you to some breathtaking views of the Italian countryside. When you arrive at Fiumicino Airport, follow signs to the airport train station. At the airport biglietteria or ticket window, buy TWO tickets: a ticket for €14 to Stazione Roma Termini, the central train station in Rome, and a ticket for €29-43 from Roma Termini to Firenze SMN on one of the high-speed trains which will get you to Florence in under two hours. When purchasing your ticket to Firenze (Florence), ask for the first high-speed train leaving Termini. You may consider purchasing these tickets online before your departure from the USA at the website www.trenitalia.com (for English, click on the UK flag in the upper right-hand corner of the page). The train from the airport does not have assigned seating, so after you validate your ticket at the end of the track, just get on any car that has space. You'll arrive on the far side of Termini station, and should walk in toward the main part of the station until you're at the head of the tracks. For the platform or binario, check the train schedule posted on the illuminated boards in the station. The track numbers and departing information for each train are posted on the partenze (departures) illuminated boards and on the illuminated signs at the end of each platform.
