Starring Charles Farrell and Mary Duncan, with a new musical score by Chris- topher Caliendo. Eureka!, 2011 (1930). Dual format + 28-page booklet. £14.99. The most recently reconstructed version of F. W. Murnau’s The Last Man (1924), released in English originally as The Last Laugh, commences with a cautionary epigraph: “Today you are the first [der Erste], revered by everyone, a minister of state, a millionaire, perhaps even a prince [ein Fürst]. Who knows what you’ll be tomorrow?” Ab- sent from other available variants of the film, these words provide the coordinates of a plot that steers between “first” and “last” while parsing the ambiguity of the latter (“least”? “ultimate”?), which the divergence in titles amplifies. Restored to the film’s opening frames, these lines key the narrative in terms of a lexical tension—one that later reappears in a newspaper notice, which the camera makes legible to the viewer, and which echoes the Biblical assurance that “the last shall be first.”1 This ancient promise is invoked in conjunction with the comedic reversal of fortune heralded by the English title.

The so-called Golden Twenties FFILMILM FILM however was also a decade in which Germany had to deal with the aftermath of the First World War. Film CULTURE CULTURE Front Weimar shows how Germany tried to reconcile IN TRANSITION IN TRANSITION the horrendous experiences of the war through the war films made between 1919 and 1933. These films shed light on the way Ger- many chose to remember its recent past. A body of twenty-five films is analysed. For insight into the understanding and reception of these films at the time, hundreds of film reviews, censorship re- ports and some popular history books are discussed. This is the first rigorous study of these hitherto unacknowledged war films. The chapters are ordered themati- cally: war documentaries, films on the causes of the war, the front life, the war at sea and the home front. • Hotel Berlin
HOTEL BERLIN: THE POLITICS OF COMMERCIAL HOSPITALITY IN THE GERMAN METROPOLIS, 1875–1945 by Adam Bisno A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland December, 2017 © 2017 Adam Bisno ii Dissertation Advisor: Peter Jelavich Adam Bisno Hotel Berlin: The Politics of Commercial Hospitality in the German Metropolis, 1875–1945 Abstract This dissertation examines the institution of the grand hotel in Imperial, Weimar, and Nazi Berlin. It is a German cultural and business history of the fate of classical liberalism, which in practice treated human beings as rational, self-regulating subjects. The major shareholders in the corporations that owned the grand hotels, hotel managers, and hotel experts, through their daily efforts to keep the industry afloat amid the vicissitudes of modern German history, provide a vantage point from which to see the pathways from quotidian difficulties to political decisions, shedding light on how and why a multi-generational group of German businessmen embraced and then rejected liberal politics and culture in Germany. Treating the grand hotel as an institution and a space for the cultivation of liberal practices, the dissertation contributes to the recent body of work on liberal governance in the modern city by seeing the grand hotel as a field in which a dynamic, socially and culturally heterogeneous population tried and ultimately failed to determine the powers and parameters of liberal subjectivity. In locating the points at which liberal policies became impracticable, this dissertation also enters a conversation about the timing and causes of the crisis of German democracy.

The majority of this information has been entered into our Merged Audiovisual Information System (MAVIS) database. Boxes indicating “MAVIS” in the last column have catalog records within the new database. To locate material, use the CTRL-F function to search the document by keyword, title, or format. Paper and manuscript materials are also listed in the MAVIS database. This database is only accessible on-site in the Moving Image Research Center. • I Am Not One of Those People Who Have Been Going to Le Giornate Del Cinema Muto for Decades
COLLEGIUM PAPERS - AN INTRODUCTION David Robinson In the early years of the Collegium, the annual papers were published in hard-copy book form, which gave them a sense of permanence which some (if not all of them, perhaps) certainly deserved. Sadly, the changing situation of cultural economies no longer permits us this traditional style of record, and we now reluctantly acknowledge that the only mode or publication for the immediate future is on-line. We look for the positive side in every necessity. The formality of book production required that the papers underwent a formal process of editing, to transform them into conventional, correct English. It made for easier reading, but we were also conscious that often we lost a certain freshness and vitality in the very errors of people battling to express themselves in a language not native to them (and moreover we had occasional complaints that our editing was too opinionated!). The internet heartens informality and is a welcoming host to orthographic eccentricity. Now, then, we feel justified in publishing the papers in their original form – errors and enthusiasm unchecked. We are proud – even amazed by the best of them; disappointed in those that have not turned out so well.
