All rights reserved. 89 THE TURKISH-IRANIAN HORSE HAIR FACE-VEIL1 Gillian Vogelsang-Eastwood Textile Research Centre, Leiden Willem Vogelsang National Museum of Ethnology, Leiden Horse hair veils in Ottoman Turkey In the early sixteenth century, the Belgian artist and tapestry designer, Pieter Coecke van Aelst (AD 1502-1550), visited Constantinopel/Istanbul to attract work for the Brussels tapestry workshops.2 He arrived at the Turkish Ottoman capital in AD 1533. His stay in Istanbul, however, was not a success and he left the city after about a year. During his stay, he made a number of drawings that were turned into woodcuts and published posthumously by his widow, Mayken Verhulst Bessemers, and called Les Moeurs et Fachons de Faire des Turz.3 These illustrations provide a glimpse of what people were wearing in Istanbul in those days, both men and women. Of particular interest are the face veils. On one of the woodcuts, it is clear that some of the women (servants) wear what came to be called a lisam, namely a length of cloth that was wrapped around the lower half of the face (Fig. 1).4 Another type of face veil, shown in the same illustration and apparently worn by some Istanbul women in addition to the lisam, was a rectangular piece of cloth that was tied around the forehead and hung downwards, over the lisam. From this and other illustrations it seems as if this type of face veil was made of very stiff material, which would indicate the use of horse hair.

    Baghdad, 10th Century The Dress of a non-Muslim woman The Rise of Islam in Medieval Society and its Influence on Clothing In order to understand and create the clothing of a 10th century woman in an Islamic State, it is incredibly important to understand how the advent of Islam affected day to day dress in Arabic society. It did not in fact create a new style of clothing, but instead it modified the styles of dress that were popular in the 6th and 7th centuries, many of which were influenced by Hellenic and Persian dress. As the progression of Islamic moral sensibilities became more and more impressed upon society, so too did the desire to keep much of the clothing simple, functional and suitable to the environment. Within the Early Islamic era (570-632 C.E) piety and morality were strongly impressed. Adornment was thought to be too ostentatious and fine fabrics and textiles considered inappropriate for a follower of Islam. During this time, one very important and identifiable change to clothing was created. It was considered against Islam if your clothing trailed the ground or if the basic under garments were past the ankle in length. “The Prophet said (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): “Isbaal (wearing one’s garment below the ankles) may apply to the izaar (lower garment), the shirt or the turban. Whoever allows any part of these to trail on the ground out of arrogance, Allaah will not look at him on the Day of Judgment”. (reported by Abu Dawud, no 4085, and al-Nisaa’I in al-Mujtabaa, Kitab (al-Zeenah,Baab Isbaal al-Izaar) These hadiths are small collections of reports and statements of what The Prophet Muhammad was observed to say were written by his closest echelon of courtiers.

To throw light on this important issue, the current study focuses on the importance of wearing Hijab by Muslim Women according to Qur’an and Sunna. It will also, looks at the concept, the place and the reasons why Allah ordered Muslim women to wear Hijab. The study is theoretical in nature, the existing available literatures and research work related to the topic will be reviewed. The study reveals that, in the seventh century, Arabia was existed as a patriarchy that objectified women and deemed them to be worthy of some respect based on their lineage and fortune. Only upper-class women wore hijab then. The hijab, therefore, worn by them at that point was one step further taken by Islam to erase the social hierarchy implemented on women. It also revealed that, there are many importance of Hijab. Such as: to obey God, and to be known as respectable women. It also, Hijab frees women from being thought of as sexual objects of desire or from being valued for their looks, or body shape rather than their minds and intellect. The paper also notes that in many dry and hot countries, Hijab helps women keep their hair cleaner for a longer time by protecting it from wind and dirt.

To throw light on this important issue, the current study focuses on the importance of wearing “hijab” by Muslim women according to “Al-Qur’an” (holy book of Islam) and “Al-Sunna” (Prophet Muhammad Tradition). It will also looks at the concept, the place, and the reasons why Allah SWT (Subhanahu Wa-Ta’ala or God Almighty) ordered Muslim women to wear “hijab”. The study is theoretical in nature and qualitative approach, the existing available literatures, and research work related to the topic of “hijab” will be reviewed. Only upper-class women wore “hijab” then. The “hijab”, therefore, worn by them at that point was one step further taken by Islam to erase the social hierarchy implemented on women. It also revealed that there are many importance of “hijab”, such as: to obey God and to be known as respectable women. It also “hijab” frees women from being thought of as sexual objects of desire, or from being valued for their looks, or body shape rather than their minds and intellect. The paper also notes that in many dry and hot countries, like in the Middle East for example, “hijab” helps women keep their hair cleaner for a longer time by protecting it from wind and dirt.
