Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Fr. Francesco has been asked by Archdiocesan Officials of the to serve on an Itinerant Catechist team in Ohio starting in September. Teams are usually composed of a priest, along with a married couple or a single man and a single woman, to begin or guide the implementation of the Neocatechumenal Way. While Fr. Francesco is in some way still united to our parish and may return from time to time, for the most part he will be offering priestly support to the lay members of the team and the parishes they will be serving in Ohio and the surrounding area. He will be joining Jack and Joan Craig from Ridgewood, who were the initial catechists in the Way here at St. John’s, and have already been serving in Ohio.

Both the officials of the Way and Myers also recognize our needs at St. John’s, and they have approved the transfer of a priest who has served in Estonia for several years and is looking to return to the United States. His arrival will be delayed by many months, however, due to the necessary renewal of religious worker visa papers according to more recent immigration requirements. In the meantime, we will make greater use of Deacon Jim in areas where he can be of service.

Fr. Mark Lane and Fr. Cyrus Gallagher recently sent letters thanking you for your response to their appeal. “The Christian Foundation for Children and Aging would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your kindness in welcoming us to speak on behalf of CFCA and those in need. Your generous and strong Faith and your continuing fidelity to the values of the Gospel of Jesus Christ are indeed a blessing. We are personally grateful for all the thoughtful attention you provided to us. If you would like to sponsor a child, a teenager, a seminarian, an adult, or a child with special needs, call 1-800-875-6564. Or contact our website at www.hopeforafamily.org”.

All are invited to an Inclusive Family Mass celebrating the many gifts of God’s people, on Sunday, July 24th, at 4:30pm, at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, 21 Church Place, North Arlington, NJ, to celebrate the Feast of St. Christina the Astonishing. Her life can speak to anyone who struggles with a behavioral disorder, and to all of us as a reminder that the face of God is in all people. Contact Mary Fleischbein at 973-998-0901 for more information about the Mass.

Thank you to all contributors for the 2011 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. Our current pledge total has now risen to $203,703.00, which is more than 213% of our goal of $95,371.00, and more than 84% of our stretch goal of $242,021.00. Please consider joining your fellow parishioners to reach this year’s stretch goal, which brings the largest rebate to our parish while also helping so many archdiocesan agencies and ministries. Please fill out a pledge card, available in the church or rectory.

Reflection on Today’s Gospel

Jesus tells a parable that makes the same point as the author of Wisdom: God’s exercise of power is tempered by leniency and mercy; God’s justice is balanced by loving-kindness. Our desire to pull up and destroy the weeds prematurely could destroy the good wheat. While the interpretation in the Gospel applies this image to different groups in a community, we can also hear this parable as referring to the weeds and wheat, the evil and goodness residing in the heart.

Jesus says God’s active presence in the world is something as small as a mustard seed and as fragile as a pinch of yeast, yet each contains a power that, when released, will bring about growth and expansion.

In the meantime, the challenge is being as patient with others as God is, while working with God to purify our own hearts. Last week Jesus warned about the sluggish heart; today he pictures a contaminated heart, good interpenetrated by evil. But the power of God is stronger than the power of evil and death. Be patient, and remain open to the workings of God’s grace.

Looking for a Great School? An article in “Working Mother” Magazine entitled, “What makes a Great School” states that there are 5 things you want to know about a school….. 1) Do the principal and the district have a plan to improve academics and challenge students? Transfiguration Academy has focused on building upon and improving the academics offered. Our engineering and technology program is one of only 2 offered in the Archdiocese. We have won several academic competitions and our graduates have won Two Million Dollars in scholarships and awards. 2) Do teachers and students work together on projects and are flexible in their teaching methods? At Transfiguration Academy, we pride ourselves on differentiated instruction, so that each student achieves his or her best. At Transfiguration Academy, we truly believe our mission: Strengthening faith, Enlightening minds, Transforming hearts...one student at at time. 3) How are special needs met? The Academy works closely with our Learning Consultants to identify special needs and to ensure that all Individual Service Plans are implemented and followed. 4) How Diverse is the School? We take great pride in the diversity and recognize that we all belong to the family of Man and the Spiritual Body of Christ! At the Academy the 3 R’s stand for: Reverence, Respect and Responsibility! 5) Is there an active parent organization? Our Home School Association is in the forefront of fundraising and instrumental in providing programs for our children. So, is Transfiguration Academy a Great School? YOUR DECISION - YOUR CHOICE The question still remains - Can you afford NOT to send you child to Transfiguration?
