PENTECOST SUNDAY May 31, 2020 OUR PASTOR’S LETTER PENTECOST Today we celebrate the birthday of the Church: Pentecost. Everything that we have celebrat- ed in this Easter Season: the Resurrection and the Ascension has been leading up to today’s celebra- tion. Jesus ascended to the right hand of the Father to send the Holy Spirit upon the Church. The Spirit of the Lord was upon the Old Testament prophets for certain periods of time. The Messiah was expected to be filled with a Divine Spirit which Jesus was. He is able to pass this Spirit to those who believe in Him. Mary believed the announcement of the Angel Gabriel and allowed God to enter into her. She trusted the message she heard. The apostles also believed the words of Jesus that He would send to them an advocate, a helper, a consoler. When the apostles received the Holy Spirit they proclaimed the mighty acts of God. Those who believed the preaching of Peter, repented of their sins, were baptized, and received the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gave gifts and charisms to the early Church which allowed her to enter into the mission that God had for her. The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. These gifts help one to be docile to the Holy Spirit’s promptings. The tradition of the Church lists twelve fruits of the Holy Spirit which are the first fruits of eternal glory: charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self- control, chastity. Hopefully we recognize that we cannot do the good that we want to do on our own strength; we need God’s help. Today we ask God to send us His Spirit. If I see my weaknesses, poverty, and sins, I can cry out to God for His assistance. The good news is that we can trust God, that He wants our true happiness. The more we allow Him into our lives, the happier we become, the freer we become; we become more ourselves. The Holy Spirit gives us peace and is the guarantee of eternal life. If we share now in the life of God, we can be confident that we will be in communion with Divine Life after this earthly life. There is no other answer to the problems which exist in our per- sonal, familial, communal, Ecclesial, and global lives than the coming of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit comes to renew the world. The Holy Spirit gives us the internal strength to live in accord with God’s will. Jesus has come to usher in a new heavens and a new earth. This will come about by the changing of hearts. The Holy Spirit gives us hearts that love, love even our enemies. Let us not seek to do our will or our plans, but rather abandon ourselves to the will of God confident that that is what is best for us. Let us allow the Holy Spirit to lead us and guide us. Let us be open to His suggestions and cooperate with Him. Come Holy Spirit, Fr.     A Reaction to Sandro Magister’s conjectures on the liturgy as celebrated in the Neocatechumenal communities Fr. Neil Xavier O’Donoghue, Ph.D. in Liturgy A story of the Desert Fathers tells of how some monks came to Abba Agathon and accused him of being a fornicator, of being an arrogant man and of always talking nonsense. The elderly monk agreed to all charges, however, when his visitors accused him of being a heretic, he vehemently denied this. When the visitors asked for an explanation of why he refused this last insult and was willing to bear the other calumnies he explained, “The first accusations I take to myself for that is good for my soul. But heresy is separation from God. Now I have no wish to be separated from God” (see Benedicta Ward, The Sayings of the Desert Fathers [Kalamazoo, MI: Cistercian Publications, 1975], 21). Over the years I have read many ridiculous suggestions and criticisms about how the liturgy is celebrated in the Neocatechumenal communities and up until now have not felt compelled to write any rebuttal. However with the furor raised by Sandro Magister in his chiesa blog (hosted by a generally anti‐clerical Italian daily newspaper) and seeing how his theories are being picked up by the main‐stream Catholic media, I felt compelled to write this short reaction in the spirit of Abba Agathon. I have been in the Neocatechumenal Way for more than 25 years and it was through this charism that I discovered my love for the Church and a special love for Catholic liturgy (not to mention my vocation to the ministerial priesthood).

    The Catholic Church in the Czech Republic Dear Readers, For many people, the Catholic Church is an overly complex organ- ism. We hope that this slim publication will help readers to form an image of the Church’s organizational structure and the diversi- ty of the community which in two thousand years has grown out of the cluster of Jesus’s disciples. For more than eleven centuries, the Church has been a part of our society. Today, it is a great tree with deep roots, bearing highly diverse fruits in many areas. Pictures, numbers and names, however, fail to capture its life or in- ner mystery. The Church calls itself the mysterious body of Christ, whose soul is the Holy Spirit. It believes that Jesus himself is mys- teriously present amongst those who have an attitude of love, that he himself shapes the lives of people who, in their attitudes and deeds, accept his word and that the Kingdom of God itself grows in the world through people who put Christ in the primary position in their lives. At the same time, all its members are aware of their weakness, wretchedness and sinfulness, but their hope is in the mercy of God. Joy from God is then the main source of testi- mony and service to society and to individuals. My wish for all readers is that in this publication they find the infor- mation they are looking for, and that they themselves experience something of the mystery of the Divine presence in living contact with people of faith or with entire communities in families, par- ishes, religious orders and movements, church schools or chari- ties.

    Neocatechumenal Way Dear Friends, Life is a battle. Sometimes the struggle takes on epic proportions like when we experience the death of a loved one, a crisis in the meaning of our life or doubts and confusion about each day’s relationships and events. Sometimes we just don’t understand what God is doing in our lives and we look for answers to the deepest questions: Why was I born? Where am I going? What will happen to me after I die? Why is getting up each day so fearful for me? What would my answer be if Jesus Christ asked me “Who do you say that I am and how can I help you?” Maybe in front of the battle of each day, you realize you need a deeper experience of your Catholic faith to live in peace and joy without fear and trepidation. If you recognize yourself in this battle or if you know someone close to you who has left the Church or has a struggle with being a Catholic in today’s culture, we are grateful to be able to offer you a unique experience of faith. A journey to rediscover Baptism will begin through a series of catecheses this February, presented by the Neocatechumenal Way. "Catechesis" is a proclamation of the Good News of Christ to the people, not just lectures but experiences of what it means to be a Christian in today's times. Most of us have been baptized as infants and may even have followed some program of religious education. Yet, the challenges of our secularized times weaken faith life, leaving us in real need of an adult formation in faith.

Thus, you too wanted by this gesture to ask that the Successor of Peter confirm your call, support your mission, bless your charism. And today I confirm your call, I support your mission and I bless your charism. Do I do it because he [pointing to Kiko] paid me? No! I do it because I want to. You will go forth in the name of Christ throughout the world to bring his Gospel: Christ goes before you, Christ accompanies you, Christ brings to fulfillment that salvation of which you are bearers! Together with you I would like to greet the Cardinals and Bishops who accompany you today and who, in their dioceses, support your mission. My cordial greeting to you all. In a special way I greet the Cardinal Vicar Agostino Vallini, as well as Cardinal Stanisław Ryłko, President of the Pontifical Council for the Laity, who has followed the process for the approval of your Statutes with dedication. I greet those in charge of the Neocatechumenal Way: Mr Kiko Argüello, whom I cordially thank for his words expressing all of your sentiments, I greet Mrs Carmen Hernández and I greet Fr Mario Pezzi. I greet the communities who set out to the neediest suburbs of Rome to do mission work, those who depart for the "missio ad gentes" on the five continents, the 200 new itinerant families and the 700 itinerant catechists responsible for the Neocatechumenal Way in the various nations. Thank you to all. May the Lord accompany you. Significantly, this meeting of ours is taking place in the Vatican Basilica, built on the tomb of the Apostle Peter. It was he himself, Prince of the Apostles who, in response to the question that Jesus addressed to the Twelve concerning his identity, fervently confessed, "You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God" (Mt 16: 16).
