OUR PASTOR’S LETTER

SECOND PENTECOST

Although Ascension Thursday was a few days ago, we are celebrating the Feast of the Ascension this Sunday. In the time between Ascension and Pentecost, we have the first novena of the Church. Next Sunday we will celebrate Pentecost in which the de- scended upon the early Church.

With the Ascension, Jesus takes our humanity into the life of the . God did not take on human flesh until the Incarnation two thousand years ago. When Jesus returns to the Father, He brings His humanity with Him, and so, for the first time, humanity entered into the life of the Trinity. At the right hand of the Father, Jesus sends the Holy Spirit upon Mary and the apostles. The Easter Season has been leading up to, and concludes with, the Feast of Pentecost.

At the Annunciation, Mary opened herself up to God. She gathered with the apostles in the upper room as they waited for Jesus’ promise to be fulfilled. He promised to send another advocate, the Holy Spirit. This week is a particu- larly good time for us to ask God to send a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit. We have been reading during the Easter Season how Jesus appeared to His followers after His resurrection from the dead, but it was not until Pentecost that they received a spirit which gave them the courage to go out to the whole world to proclaim the Good News.

Hopefully, God has been revealing to each of us in different ways the truth that we need a spirit that comes from God to allow us to do the good that we want to do. We can ask Mary to intercede for us so that we can be open to the gift of the Holy Spirit. John Paul II spoke during his pontificate about a second Pentecost. The first Pentecost took place at a time in which there was turmoil in the world against the Church. The field today is prepared and the world is ripe for a new evangelization of which John Paul II also spoke about. Let us ask God to send the Holy Spirit upon us, the Church, so that we may present the Gospel in a way that is compelling to this generation. Let us ask God to renew the Church so that she can fulfill her mission to be a light to the na- tions. Let us ask that God’s love may be manifested in the lives of the members of the Church. The world is waiting for the Gospel to be lived concretely in the lives of Christians.

The problems which face the world will not be solved by humans without the help of God. God is acting and moving and renewing the face of the earth. God has the answer and will bring to humanity. Let us open ourselves to God’s will so that He may act in us to bring about His plan.

Come Holy Spirit, Fr. Mark

I picture Jesus returning to the Father in Heaven, saying, “Father, Mission Accomplished” and then saying, “Father, let us breathe forth our Holy Spirit upon the world through my risen and Glorified body.” (taken from Catholicstrength.com, Tom Mulcahy, M.A.)
