  • The Life-Cycle of the Barcelona Automobile-Industry Cluster, 1889-20151
The Life-Cycle of the Barcelona Automobile-Industry Cluster, 1889-20151 • JORDI CATALAN Universitat de Barcelona The life cycle of a cluster: some hypotheses Authors such as G. M. P. Swann and E. Bergman have defended the hy- pothesis that clusters have a life cycle.2 During their early history, clusters ben- efit from positive feedback such as strong local suppliers and customers, a pool of specialized labor, shared infrastructures and information externali- ties. However, as clusters mature, they face growing competition in input mar- kets such as real estate and labor, congestion in the use of infrastructures, and some sclerosis in innovation. These advantages and disadvantages combine to create the long-term cycle. In the automobile industry, this interpretation can explain the rise and decline of clusters such as Detroit in the United States or the West Midlands in Britain.3 The objective of this paper is to analyze the life cycle of the Barcelona au- tomobile- industry cluster from its origins at the end of the nineteenth centu- ry to today. The Barcelona district remained at the top of the Iberian auto- mobile clusters for a century. In 2000, when Spain had reached sixth position 1. Earlier versions of this paper were presented at the International Conference of Au- tomotive History (Philadelphia 2012), the 16th World Economic History Congress (Stellen- bosch 2012), and the 3rd Economic History Congress of Latin America (Bariloche 2012). I would like to thank the participants in the former meetings for their comments and sugges- tions. This research benefitted from the financial support of the Spanish Ministry of Econo- my (MINECO) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the projects HAR2012-33298 (Cycles and industrial development in the economic history of Spain) and HAR2015-64769-P (Industrial crisis and productive recovery in the Spanish history).

MODERN ECONOMIC AND GEOGRAPHICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND PROSPECTS OF DEVELOPMENT... QUAESTIONES GEOGRAPHICAE 30(2) • 2011 MODERN ECONOMIC AND GEOGRAPHICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND PROSPECTS OF DEVELOPMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION INFRASTRUCTURE IN THE BAIKAL REGION OF RUSSIA TATIANA ZABORTSEVA Russian Academy of Sciences, Siberian Branch, V.B. Sochava Institute of Geography, Irkutsk, Russia Manuscript received February 15, 2011 Revised version June 8, 2011 ZABORTSEVA T. Modern economic and geographical characteristics and prospects of development of environmen- tal protection infrastructure in the Baikal region of Russia. Quaestiones Geographicae 30(2), Bogucki Wydawnictwo Naukowe, Poznań 2011, pp. 81–86, 2 figs, 3 tables. DOI 10.2478/v10117-011-0020-2, ISBN 978-83-62662-62-3, ISSN 0137-477X. ABSTRACT : In the administrative division of Russia, the Baikal region is traditionally considered as embracing three parts: the Irkutsk oblast’, the Republic of Buryatia, and Zabaikalsky Kray. Its area is three times larger than that of France (1.6 million km²), but its population size and density are typical of “the Siberian depth of the coun- try” (4.6 million people, under 3 persons/km²). One of the most important global features of a part of this region – the Baikal Natural Territory – is to ensure the preservation of Lake Baikal as a World Heritage Site. A strategy of environmentally oriented land use determines an adequate level of development of ecological infrastructure and its most important sector – environmental protection infrastructure (EPI). The article presents an analysis of the current infrastructure for managing solid waste, and proposes a forecast scenario of its development with the use of the gravity model in the EPI sector involving recycling collection points.

Ricketts and Calvin (1952) noted its occurrence in Coos Bay, Oregon in 1950. Rhithropanopeus harrisii, a common resident of Texas estuaries, has recently expanded its range to freshwater reservoirs in that state (Howells 2001; […]). They have been found in the E.V. Spence, Colorado City, Tradinghouse Creek, Possum Kingdom, and Lake Balmorhea reservoirs. These occurrences are the first records of this species in freshwater inland lakes.” From Fofonoff et al. (2018): “[…] R. harrisii has invaded many estuaries in different parts of the world, and has even colonized some freshwater reservoirs in Texas and Oklahoma, where high mineral content of the water may promote survival and permit reproduction (Keith 2006; Boyle 2010).” This species is in trade in the United States. • Rules and Options
Rules and Options The author has attempted to draw as much as possible from the guidelines provided in the 5th edition Players Handbooks and Dungeon Master's Guide. Statistics for weapons listed in the Dungeon Master's Guide were used to develop the damage scales used in this book. Interestingly, these scales correspond fairly well with the values listed in the d20 Modern books. Game masters should feel free to modify any of the statistics or optional rules in this book as necessary. It is important to remember that Dungeons and Dragons abstracts combat to a degree, and does so more than many other game systems, in the name of playability. For this reason, the subtle differences that exist between many firearms will often drop below what might be called a "horizon of granularity." In D&D, for example, two pistols that real world shooters could spend hours discussing, debating how a few extra ounces of weight or different barrel lengths might affect accuracy, or how different kinds of ammunition (soft-nosed, armor-piercing, etc.) might affect damage, may be, in game terms, almost identical. This is neither good nor bad; it is just the way Dungeons and Dragons handles such things. Who can use firearms? Firearms are assumed to be martial ranged weapons. Characters from worlds where firearms are common and who can use martial ranged weapons will be proficient in them. Anyone else will have to train to gain proficiency— the specifics are left to individual game masters. Optionally, the game master may also allow characters with individual weapon proficiencies to trade one proficiency for an equivalent one at the time of character creation (e.g., monks can trade shortswords for one specific martial melee weapon like a war scythe, rogues can trade hand crossbows for one kind of firearm like a Glock 17 pistol, etc.).

Article / Artículo / Artigo An Ethnomusicological Approach to Orientalism: The Musical and Historical Study of the Moors and Christians in Villena (Spain) Luis Gimenez Amoros, University of the Western Cape, Cape Town, South Africa [email protected] Abstract This article examines the historical and musical forms of Orientalism found in the festival popularly known as Moros y cristianos (the Moors and Christians) in Spain and, in particular, the town of Villena in the province of Alicante. Since the 12th century, this traditional festival is mostly celebrated in towns along the eastern Mediterranean coast of Spain which includes Villena. The contextualization of this festival through Orientalism provides an understanding of the exoticization of Muslim-Spanish music through the música festera (the music composed for Moros y cristianos), a musical style with more than four thousand pieces composed by more than three hundred Spanish composers over the course of the last two centuries. This article reveals by conducting ethnomusicological studies using Orientalism, there is a possibility of reconsidering the colonial narrative embedded in the cultural and musical symbolism of música festera.

Rd. Enny Rukmini Sekarningrat a. Riwayat Hidup Rd.
