“O God, who show the light of your truth to those who go astray, so that they may return to the right path, give all who for the faith they profess are accounted Christians the grace to reject whatever is contrary to the name of Christ and to strive after all that does it honor. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son...” - for the 15th Sunday in

Our Collect (opening prayer) this Sunday is a bit lengthier than typical for a Sunday in Ordinary Time, but it boils down to one basic theme: we are asking God that we may be able to successfully practice what we preach. The prayer taken as a whole is asking God to help us to live in our daily lives that which we proclaim that we believe with our lips. So, let’s start in the middle of the prayer. We ask God the Father to give all of us, who say that we are Christians through the profession of our faith, the grace to live that way. What is this prayer getting at? Every Sunday at Mass, we recite together the . We may recall that the word “creed” comes from the Latin word “,” which means “I believe.” When we recite the creed at Mass, it’s important that we realize that every phrase in that creed is a declarative statement. We are telling God, those all around us, and the world what it is that we believe. That’s why it is important that we try hard not to just ramble off the words of the creed each Sunday without taking time to think about what we are saying- these are some of the most important words our lips will ever speak- we are professing our faith in God. But the Collect goes on to ask God for the grace, the spiritual help, for us to put into practice in our everyday lives what we say that we believe every Sunday. How do we do that? As the prayer states, by rejecting whatever in our lives is contrary to the name of Christ and striving after all that does the name of Christ honor. We must always try to be diligent in making sure that all things that we do in our lives honor our name as “Christian.” How we speak, what we say, what movies and TV we watch, the music we listen to, the friends we hang out with, the way we prioritize our time and our money: all these things should be done with our Christian name in mind. Will this activity, this purchase, this relationship, this use of my time honor Christ’s name? If the answer is no, if the answer is that this activity, purchase, relationship, use of my time is actually contrary to Christian values or Christ’s teaching, then we need to reject it. But even when we make mistakes, when we fall into sin, as all of us do, then the opening phrase of the Collect comforts us: “O God, who show the light of your truth to those who go astray, so that they may return to the right path...” God knows that we are sinful human beings, that we often fail. He calls us to choose what will honor our name as Christian, and reject what is contrary to it, but when we fall, He in no way abandons us. He shows us the way back to the right path by shedding the light of His love and mercy on us. In other words, God is always, always, looking out for our best interest, always loving us, always leading us back to Himself. God bless you! ~ Fr. Steve

Catholic Tidbits: Priestly

Last week, I spoke about the first ritual the completes in immediate preparation for the celebration of Mass when he arrives in the before Mass: he washes his hands. Moving now to the vestments that the priest puts on, the first is called the “amice.” An amice is a rectangular piece of cloth with a red cross in the center and two long strings attached on one side. The priest drapes the amice over his shoulders, and ties the strings around his torso, tucking the edge of the amice into the collar of his shirt. The amice is a remnant of what used to be common practice- would wear a hood during Mass that would drape over the top of their vestments. The practical purpose of the amice is to cover the everyday clothes of the priest, including his roman collar, for the celebration of Mass, to signify that the celebration of Mass is something entirely different from an everyday activity. It also serves the function, since it sits between the priest’s neck and the collar of his vestments, to protect the vestments from perspiration and stain. Symbolically, the amice is representative of a helmet, a protection against the attacks of the evil one. The prayer that the priest prays as he puts on the amice makes this clear: “Place upon me, O Lord, the helmet of salvation, that I may overcome the assaults of the devil.”
