During this period there has been another change that is perhaps more important, though less prominent, one I would like to call a “cultural turn” of Chinese universities, which is expressed most clearly in the fact that many people, especially university leaders, are talking about the idea of the university in general and the ideas guiding particular universities. In this chapter I try to describe this phenomenon and explain its background and implications. 1. SCHOLAR, SPACE AND SPIRIT: GROWING INTERESTS IN “THE IDEA OF THE UNIVERSITY” IN CHINA Although in 1983 a book in Chinese with the title of The Idea of the University1 was already published by Jin Yaoji, then the vice chancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and similar discourse was started in Taiwan slightly later,2 when I proposed to a young editor of a journal in Shanghai towards the end of 1999 that it might be interesting to write something on the idea of the university, the phrase “the idea of the university” seemed to impress her very much as something quite new in the Mainland.     SCIENCE CHINA Chemistry • EDITORIAL • November 2011 Vol.54 No.11: 1667–1669 doi:10.1007/s11426-011-4404-x Preface In Honor of the 80th Birthday of Professor Ronald Breslow Delegation in Pure and Applied Chemistry that visited China in May to June 1978 prior to the establishment of diplomatic relationships between the People’s Republic of China and the USA [5]. The visit helped lay the foundation for scientific and educational exchanges between the two countries since the late 1970s, including the studies of Chinese graduate students and visiting scholars in the USA to this date. Born to a family of a physician father, Breslow’s interest in chemistry was sparked in middle school when he was given a textbook of college organic chemistry. He often conducted chemistry experiments in the family basement, including trying to make aromatic compounds with silicon instead of carbon [6]. At times compounds young Breslow Dr. Ronald Breslow made sent a tremendous smell to the house and his father's office which was attached to the house, often making his father’s patients go screaming. This provides an opportune moment to review HKUST’s development during the years of British administration. The planning of the University started in September 1986 and the first Univer- sity Council was formed in April 1988. The found- ing President (called Vice-Chancellor initially) was in post in September 1988. The University opened for classes in October 1991, producing the first batch of graduates in June 1993. By the start of this academic year, the Univer- sity had reached its designated target of 7,000 student population. The actual numbers as of 30 June 1997 were 5,550 undergraduate and 1,338 postgraduate students.

To help managers in Chinese or foreign companies gain an understanding of Chinese philosophy, history, and contem- porary culture, DPark and the School of Philosophy at Fudan University have collaborated to establish a learning platform that will facilitate cultural exchanges between China and its partners. 5 Introduction of DPARK The DPARK center was approved by the Shanghai local government in 2010. It is the first and ONLY foreign business center using the western name Duarte, to help foreign SMEs to establish themselves in China. DPARK offers a one-stop service for foreign SMEs, including company registration, equipped offices, legal addresses, bookkeeping, human resources, etc. There are now more than 40 foreign organizations and enterprises from France, the United States, Italy, and Belgium that have joined DPARK in the fields of medicine, engineering, banking & finance, enterprise consulting, cosmetics, food, wine, and IT industries. 6 Introduction to Fudan University Fudan University is one of the top five universities in Mainland China, and is a comprehensive university that offers program in the liberal arts, science, medicine, business, and engineering.
