It is fitting therefore, that we should honour to&y seine-one who is not only ;I world le:ider in scientific research, hiit also generally recognised as one of the Chinese scientists most responsilde for the proniotion of acadeniic exchange and collaboration lmween China and other countries, particularly the IJnited States. Professor XIE XII)E, erstwhile President of Fudan IJniversity in Shanghai, and currently Professor of Physics there, first graduatd with a 13s in Physics from Xianlen IJniversity, but sul>secluently took her MA in Physics from Smith College, and her I’ll13 in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, specialising in solid state theory. She returned to China via the IJnited Kingdom to take up ;I lectureship in the Department of Physics at Fudm IJniversity, where she has spent her entire cart‘er as a teacher, rcstucher and administrator. After a period as Adjunct 1)irector of the Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, she was rmninated Vice-President of Fudan LJniversity, a post she held from 1978 to 1983. From 197X to 1983, she was also 1)irector of the Institute of Modern Physics at Fudan [Jniversity. And from 1983 to 1988, she held the Presidency of the IJniversity. Fudan is one of China’s leading universities, and its reputation is due in no small part to Professor Xie’s work in the evolution of science in China, through her truly pioneering contrilmtions in the veiy early days of the developnimt of senii- conductor physics. -

With the introduction of western scientific methods into colonial India, isolating, purifying and determining the chemical structures of the components in these materials, and some understanding of the basis of their action became possible. We focus here on the birth and growth of the chemistry of natural products of medicinal and technical value. We discuss here the roles of three pioneers in organic chemistry who started their work in colonial India and enabled the blossoming and growth of outstanding research the field, once the colonial bondage was freed: Professors T R Seshadri, who was single-handedly responsible in generating excellent schools of medicinal products chemistry across the country, K Venkataraman who catalyzed many Indian-initiated chemical industries through his research and mentorship, and Salimuzzaman Siddiqui, who became the father of organic chemistry as well as modern scientific research in Pakistan in particular. Indian Journal of History of Science, 53.4 (2018) T51-T59 DOI: 10.16943/ijhs/2018/v53i4/49525 Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, Working through/against the Colonial System Robert Anderson* (Received 18 April 2018; revised 17 May 2018) Abstract Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar was unusual in the scientific community of twentieth century India, perhaps unique. His behaviour tested the ‘default settings’ of the political and administrative system in which he lived and worked, as shown here in three examples from his life. Constrained by those settings like everyone else, he nevertheless found an entrepreneurial space in which he could experiment with innovations. He was a leader with an ego, but also seems to have been an enabler, still able to identify promise in others. Although he was deep in the rules of the system, he does not appear to have been a blocker of other peoples’ potential. Bhatnagar was, when we see him in these three situations, usually in transition from one state [in the chemical sense] to another. He was polyvalent, combining and acting with quite difference forces. He seems never to have been trapped in a binary set of oppositions, at least not for long. He was a sign, in the semiotic sense, which could be read in two or three different ways. All this made him an intermediary leader in the building of scientific institutions for the scientific community, channeling the energies and resources of the colonial system through the hands of the builders, some of whom he had picked himself. But what kind of leader was Bhatnagar in the last stage of his life? November 2013 2 This thesis was written as the result of a dissertation project funded by the Landesexzellenzinitiative Hamburg, which allowed me to participate in the Hamburg International Graduate School for the Study of Regional Powers, jointly organized by the University of Hamburg and the GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies. Due to this grant, I was able to pursue my own studies by linking up with GIGA´s China specialists, conducting the necessary field research trips, and taking advantage of internal review mechanisms to improve the quality of my work. This thesis not have been completed without the excellent supervision of Patrick Köllner, who went out of his way to provide very speedy, thorough and insightful commentary on my drafts. Heike Holbig and Nele Noesselt also offered very valuable suggestions on how to improve parts of this thesis from a sinological perspective. My colleague Nadine Godehardt shared her experience on conducting research in China and introduced me to some of her contacts there, giving me a leg up on my own work. During my own trips to Beijing and Shanghai, I was able to take advantage of the hospitality of China Foreign Affairs University and Fudan University, allowing me to gather first-hand knowledge about these institutions and witnessing the education of China´s next generation of IR specialists. -
