Smith August 2017 108 Pages Directed by: Keith Philips, Albert Meier, and Scott Grubbs Department of Biology Western Kentucky University Sub-Saharan Africa is home to nine described species of Dignomus Wollaston, 1862. Study and dissection of specimens has led me to the hypothesis that there are nine undocumented species in this region. Descriptions and images of the new species are presented and discussed, along with a compiled list of all described species from the Sub- Saharan region. The probable biology as geographic distributions for members of the genus are also given. Additionally, a phylogenetic analysis of 95 species of bostrichoids using CO1 molecular data was done with a focus on the origins of Dignomus and Pseudomezium. parsimony and bayesian analyses were run, the later providing evidence that Pseudomezium derived genus of Dignomus. Support was also found for a monophyletic Ptininae (i.e., the spider beetles) but not for the bostrichids, and anobiids. More data will be needed to clarify the relationships among the taxa of Bostrichoidea. vii DOCUMENTATION OF NEW SPECIES OF DIGNOMUS OF SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA INTRODUCTION Globally, the ptinids are comprised of over 70 genera and approximately 600 species (Smiley and Philips 2011). Of the many unique spider beetle taxa described from Sub-Saharan Africa, there are several undescribed that have yet to be described. Hence, they are not only diverse group, but also full of potential in regards to taxonomic descriptions as well as phylogenetic analyses. Dignomus, is one of the more well-known genera in some regions such as Europe, but not in Sub-Saharan Africa. Described in 1862, the genus Dignomus Wollaston was demoted to a subgenus of Ptinus by Pic (1912) but was later reestablished as a valid genus by Bellés (1982). There are currently 60 documented species in the African continent (Borowski 2000b). This

This article describes the main pests of grain reserves and grain products, the main contamination sources of grain storages, the results of harmfulness of the pest complex and measures of their control. The timely revealing of the ways of contamination of grain reserves and preventive and direct control measures decrease the degree of contamination and reduce the harmfulness in the storages. We also studied the role and value of the ozone and ion and ozone treatment of grain in the storage protection system against pests. The purpose of the work is to develop an improved protection system for grain storages and its derivative products from pests that allows reducing the losses and deterioration in quality by 1.5-2 times in the new conditions of economic management and peculiarities of storage. The observation of the sanitary conditions in the storages preventing the intervention of pests into food reserves were observed and examined. The efficiency of the preventive measures was estimated.

Keith Philips Copyright by Glené Mynhardt 2012 Abstract Ant-associated behavior has evolved rampantly among various groups of Arthropoda, and has arisen in at least 34 families of beetles. Due to the amazing morphological modifications and different kinds of interactions that occur within myrmecophilous (ant-associated) beetles, authors have predicted that myrmecophily has evolved in a step-wise fashion from casual, facultative associations to closely integrated, obligate interactions. In this dissertation, myrmecophily within the Coleoptera is reviewed, and known behaviors, ant-beetle interactions, and associated morphological adaptations are discussed. In order to better understand how myrmecophily has evolved, two groups of beetles are studied in a phylogenetic context. A cladistic analysis of 40 species of the myrmecophilous scarab genus, Cremastocheilu s Knoch is presented. Characters related to a myrmecophilous habit are largely informative, especially those characters related to the glandular trichomes (clusters of setae typically associated with exocrine glands). Two of the five previously recognized subgenera, C. (Myrmecotonus ) and C. (Anatrinodia ) are synonymized with the subgenus C. (Cremastocheilus ). Even though behavioral information is only known for a few species, the resulting phylogeny indicates that monophyletic subgenera are largely associated with the same ant hosts, although specific interactions with ant hosts can vary even in closely-related taxa.

    Entomologiske Meddelelser Indeks for Bind 1-67 (1887-1999) Entomologisk Forening København 2000 FORORD Tidsskriftet "Entomologiske Meddelelser" - Entomologisk Forenings medlemsblad - blev grundlagt i 1887, og er således det ældste danske entomologiske tidsskrift, som stadig udgives. Det har siden sin start haft til formål at udbrede kendskabet til entomologien i almindelighed og dansk entomologi i særdeleshed. De første 5 bind udkom i årene 1887-1896 og omhandlede primært artikler af særlig relevans for dansk entomologi. Herefter skiftede det format, såvel rent fysisk som (mere gradvis) indholdsmæssigt, og fik efterhånden et mere internationalt tilsnit med en vis andel af bl.a. tysk- og engelsksprogede artikler. I forbindelse med overgangen til det nye format, benævntes tidsskriftet nu som "Entomologiske Meddelelser, 2. Række" og nummereringen af de enkelte bind startede forfra. Efter at have praktiseret denne nummerering i nogle år, droppedes dog betegnelsen "2. Række", og man vendte tilbage til at nummerere bindene fortløbende fra det først udkomne bind. Efter at tidsskriftet op igennem 1900-tallet havde fået et stigende indhold af artikler med internationalt sigte, blev det fra bind 39 (1971) besluttet at koncentrere indholdet til primært dansksprogede artikler af særlig relevans for den danske fauna. Samtidig overgik de enkelte bind til at udgøre årgange i stedet for, som tidligere, at være flerårige. "Entomologiske Meddelelser" har siden sin start bragt hen mod 1600 originale, videnskabelige artikler eller mindre meddelelser, næsten 500 boganmeldelser, over 100 biografier eller nekrologer over primært danske entomologer, samt enkelte meddelelser af anden slags. For at lette overskueligheden over den meget betydelige mængde af information disse publikationer rummer, har Entomologisk Forenings bestyrelse fundet tiden moden til at sammenstille et indeks over indholdet af samtlige udkomne numre af "Entomologiske Meddelser" til og med bind 67 (årgang 1999).

Se realiza el estudio del género Episernus C. G. Thomson, 1863 con tres especies en el área ibérica mas una de dudosa presencia. De las que se relaciona el material consultado, se da una redescripción de las mismas, se comenta su distribución y biología, y se comple- menta con el habitus de todas las especies, dibujos de las antenas, de los palpos maxilares y labiales, y de los edeagos con detalle de sus piezas. Para situar el género Episernus dentro de la subfamilia Ernobiinae se da la clave de tribus de la subfamilia y la de géneros de la tribu Ernobiini Pic, 1912 a nivel de la zona de estudio.
