Dates: 1880-1910 Level: Fonds Extent: 20 boxes (28 files) Name of creator: Joseph John Bennett Administrative / biographical history: From the early 1880s, as a consequence of violent anti-semitism in some countries of Eastern Europe such as Russia and Bulgaria, the immigration of Jews into Britain assumed politically significant dimensions, and brought with it hostility and antagonism within some sections of the host population. The East End of London, in areas like Whitechapel, was the main focus of such immigration. East End newspapers of the period carried many reports of related incidents and opinions. In 1905 the Aliens Act, intended to restrict ‘pauper’ and ‘undesirable’ aliens was passed. The material in this collection of notes, transcripts and newspaper reports was compiled by Joseph John Bennett during research in pursuance of the degree of M.Phil. (1979) at the University of Sheffield (thesis entitled East End newspaper opinion and Jewish immigration, 1885-1905).     KATHARINE MARIE BRADLEY POVERTY AND PHILANTHROPY IN EAST LONDON 1918 – 1959: THE UNIVERSITY SETTLEMENTS AND THE URBAN WORKING CLASSES UNIVERSITY OF LONDON PhD IN HISTORY CENTRE FOR CONTEMPORARY BRITISH HISTORY INSTITUTE OF HISTORICAL RESEARCH UNIVERSITY OF LONDON The copyright of this thesis rests with the author and no quotation from it or information derived from it may be published without the prior written consent of the author. ABSTRACT This thesis explores the relationship between the university settlements and the East London communities through an analysis their key areas of work during the period: healthcare, youth work, juvenile courts, adult education and the arts. The university settlements, which brought young graduates to live and work in impoverished areas, had a fundamental influence of the development of the welfare state. This occurred through their alumni going on to enter the Civil Service and politics, and through the settlements’ ability to powerfully convey the practical experience of voluntary work in the East End to policy makers. The period 1918 – 1959 marks a significant phase in this relationship, with the economic depression, the Second World War and formative welfare state having a significant impact upon the settlements and the communities around them. This thesis draws together the history of these charities with an exploration of the complex networking relationships between local and national politicians, philanthropists, social researchers and the voluntary sector in the period. This thesis argues that work on the ground, an influential dissemination network and the settlements’ experience of both enabled them to influence the formation of national social policy in the period.

    East End Immigrants and the Battle for Housing Sarah Glynn 2004 East End Immigrants and the Battle for Housing: a comparative study of political mobilisation in the Jewish and Bengali communities The final version of this paper was published in the Journal of Historical Geography 31 pp 528­ 545 (2005) Abstract Twice in the recent history of the East End of London, the fight for decent housing has become part of a bigger political battle. These two very different struggles are representative of two important periods in radical politics – the class politics, tempered by popular­frontism that operated in the 1930s, and the new social movement politics of the seventies. In the rent strikes of the 1930s the ultimate goal was Communism. Although the local Party was disproportionately Jewish, Communist theory required an outward looking orientation that embraced the whole of the working class. In the squatting movement of the 1970s political organisers attempted to steer the Bengalis onto the path of Black Radicalism, championing separate organisation and turning the community inwards. An examination of the implementation and consequences of these different movements can help us to understand the possibilities and problems for the transformation of grass­roots activism into a broader political force, and the processes of political mobilisation of ethnic minority groups.     III The Breath of the East East and West may not intermingle. - Dr Petrie, in Rohmer (1985: 146) By the early 1930s a mythical, exotic idea of ‘Limehouse’ had been so widely disseminated in cultural texts that hundreds of well-to-do young people arrived in the area in search of mystery and thrills. So- called ‘Bright Young Things’ travelled across London to ‘slum it’, of- ten wearing dinner jackets and expensive dresses as signifiers of their class, wealth and perceived difference to the inhabitants of the strange, exotic space that they were visiting (Farson 1991: 100). Indeed, young West Enders would tour the “toughest, roughest streets, taverns and music halls in search of new excitements” (Bermant 1975: 188). In this chapter I want to try to chart representations of Limehouse that have together facilitated the endurance of a specifically eastern or Ori- ental idea of east London. In Down and Out in Paris and London (1933), George Orwell constructs a powerful vision of an East End of London of the late 1920s and early 1930s. Writing about the poor and homeless of the East End, he suggests that “this tramp-monster is no truer to life than the sinister Chinaman of the magazine stories” (1984: 178). So the writer clearly saw that Limehouse had come to function as a powerful spatial idea. But bearing this in mind, it is significant that Orwell moves eastward through London from the Waterloo Road in this text. One wonders whether he was drawn to the East End because of its powerful mythology rather than its status as just another poor, run- down area of the city.

Generally: Whitechapel, in the East-End of London, was one of its poorest districts; 30,000 people lived there (176,000 lived in the bigger police Whitechapel H-Division area). Middle classes. Although Whitechapel was marked by poverty, there were businesses and richer inhabitants as well. Usually they lived and traded along the larger roads such as Whitechapel Road and Commercial Road. Pollution and poor sanitation: London suffered from terrible pollution from coal and gas fumes and industries (e.g. the London Smog was a soot-laden fog that severely restricted visibility and caused death from impeded respiration / breathing); Sewerage and sanitation was poor and healthy drinking water unreliable, both causing diseases such as typhus and cholera. Work: Much of the work in Whitechapel was casual or sweated labour: o casual labour – such as in the docks or in construction – meant that workers were employed a day at a time: no job or income security; o sweated labour meant work in cramped, dusty and unhealthy “sweatshops” for low wages in “sweated trades”, e.g. tailoring, dress and shoe making. This was the view of Jonathon Rose, writing in his text on The Intellectual Life of the British Working Classes. In developing this view he pointed to: A search by subject through the on line MLA International Bibliography for 1991 to 2000 (which) produces 13,820 hits for “women”, 4,539 for “gender”, 1,862 for “race”, 710 for “post-colonial” and only 136 for “working class”. (Rose 2000: 464) In Rose’s view this uncoupling of the working class from issues of gender, ethnicity and global political change is severely damaging and is related to processes on new class formation within the professional and middle classes. His ire is directed at the “affluent and ambitious, profit motivated and style conscious” cultural professions who in: The boutique economy that have constructed . The cartoon appeared on the eve of the discovery of the so-called ‘double event’: the murders of Elizabeth Stride in Dutfield’s Yard, Berner Street and that of Katherine Eddowes in Mitre Square, across the borders of the City of London.

Contact: [email protected] Urban Chinatowns in Europe: with cases in London and Paris London and Paris are comparable in their wealth of ethnic diversity, and the amount of Chinese population is impressive. As a result, the presence of Chinatown in these two cities is understandable, and they are the only significant Chinatowns in Europe. Then, the question such as which Chinatown is larger often comes to people’s minds. However, from the available information, there is no standard answer, and the debate for making different selections is warrant. In the past, I had the pleasure to travel to these two great cities, and my keen interest in Chinatown had taken me to set my foot on those territories. After extensive self-guided tours, I tended to think that making a ranking between them is like comparisons of apples and oranges, because they exhibit distinctive characteristics, and their strengths and weakness are usually unique. With this understanding, describing them, side by side, from different angles seems a constructive way to better appreciate them. Unfortunately, literature with this fashion seems, to the best of my knowledge, lacking.

    A walk around the Isle of Dogs Updated: 13 March 2021 Length: About 4 miles Duration: Around 3½–4 hours INTRODUCTION This fascinating circular walk takes you around the riverside path of the Isle of Dogs, once just a large exposed, waterlogged and virtually desolate area of land lying to the east of London. It became the home of the greatest docks in the world and the centre of British commerce, whilst since the development of Canary Wharf it is now at the heart of Britain’s financial life. The walk begins and ends at Canary Wharf. Please note – I suggest this walk around the island should be done in good weather as much of it is ‘exposed to the elements’ and there aren’t many places where you can shelter from rain or high winds. GETTING HERE There are several ways to arrive at this point and I list three of them here, giving fairly detailed instructions. Arriving by Thames Clipper This is the easiest and most convenient way to arrive if you are travelling down from central London. From Canary Wharf Pier turn right along the riverside promenade (with the river on your right), pass several upmarket restaurants on your left and then what is 1 currently an unfinished building development site and cross over the little bridge. Then start the walk by picking up ‘STARTING THE WALK’ further below. From Canary Wharf DLR station – there are two stations that serve Canary Wharf – one is the DLR and the other is the Jubilee line underground. Leave the platform (you can alight from the train on either side) and take the escalator down to the lower concourse.
