Spring/Summer 2012

Forewords from the Head

Spring has flown by and you have all  Faculty & Staff Updates been very busy. We have begun  Awards/Congratulations searches for a number of positions and  Grants I thank all of you who have been so  Testing Services & welcoming to the interviewees. Our Clinical Trial Agreements greatest asset is our people. Really.  Books & Papers  In the News It will be a great time at the End of  Personal News Year Celebration in the Blue  Who Am I Commons, June 14th, noon-2pm. Remember to wear your WolfPack best! You don’t want to miss Steve Marks as the Wolf, Tracy Hill’s personal revelations contest, the random gifts or the staff and graduate student awards. The food is always great (thanks to all of you). So leave those pods in the Terry Center, the Health and Wellness Center, the Barn and the Research Building and come on over as we end another successful year. If you want to see what you might miss if you don’t make it, here is the link to last year’s festivities: http://www.cvm.ncsu.edu/docs/secure/documents/docs_year_end_party_2011.pdf

Some big spring events: Dentistry has moved into their new digs (great color!) and the Exotics Service has opened for business in their new area. The clinical skills lab is full of dust and wet concrete as the renovations proceed. Hopefully the noise has not affected Equine too terribly. The Open House was a huge success thanks to all your efforts. A big hat’s off to Rita Hanel, who worked tirelessly to pull it off. We said goodbye (sort of, he keeps re-appearing) to Shane Christian. (http://www.cvm.ncsu.edu/docs/secure/social_events.html). Nancy Monteiro will be moving to Kansas State this summer and Richard McMullen will be moving back to Germany this fall. We will miss them. – Lizette Hardie

Who Am I

Beth Barlow, Equine Research Technician Hello! I am originally from a rural area of upstate New York, and often people are amused to find that Raleigh is the biggest city I have lived in! I grew up in a very small country town, called Apalachin. The biggest thing the town is known for was the place of the infamous 1957 Mafia Summit that had over 100 of the US and Canadian mafia bosses meeting at a small farmhouse. The local police busted it when it was noticed that there were a lot of very expensive cars arriving, definitely not a normal occurrence! I have lived in North Carolina since 1997, when I came south for college. I graduated from University of North Carolina at Wilmington with a BS in Marine Biology and minor in Chemistry. I have lived in the triangle since, and absolutely love it. I started at the vet school in May of 2001 when I was hired by Drs. Ron Baynes and Jim Riviere in PHP and worked for them until last May, when I switched to DoCS to work for Drs. Jen Davis and Betta Breuhaus as their chemist. I am excited to be part of DoCS. Outside of the vet school I am an active member of the Raleigh Jaycee’s, and have served on their board of directors for several years. I love the community service that I get to do with them, and am often found at the annual Haunted House, working behind the scenes to help build it, and even sometimes making an appearance as “silent” Beth, in the customer queue to help entertain. I quickly found as I was trying to scare people, that my voice is the least scary thing you will ever hear, and by being silent and interacting (often as a street sweeper) with the customer’s in-line, I can scare the pants off them. Who knew! I also enjoy our annual Goodfellow’s project, where we take around 100 underprivileged kids from the Wake County School System, and give them a shopping spree at Belk’s to purchase needed items coats, clothes, and shoes, Christmas dinner, and a visit with Santa (presents and all!). It is always a rewarding experience, and it never fails to put me in the Christmas spirit, I am proud that it is the longest running Jaycee project in the world. We work all year to raise money for the 12 project, with fundraisers such as the Haunted House, the Turkey Shoot at the NC State Fair, and PONY (a girl’s fast pitch softball tournament that brings in over 200 teams to the community for a week). When I am not busy with the Jaycees or at work, I am a complete homebody, and love to play with my dog Liam, quilt, and read. ______
