In 1896, André Ruinart commissioned the Czech artist Alphonse Mucha to create a poster that would showcase the house. Since then, the house has gone on to commission some of the world’s finest contemporary artists and designers, giving them free reign during their residencies to pay tribute to its cuvées, its history, its heritage and its crayères: the impressive chalk cellars that are listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site. The regions idiosyncrasies and complexities had in the past left it isolated and reserved for the cognoscenti. With the pending release of the 2015s, it is hard to recall such excitement, interest and demand amongst global the fine wine community. Neal Martin’s scores are out and there are a splattering of ratings from Stephen Tanzer (Vinous), we still await scores from Burghound but regardless of the latter, the quality of the 2015s is without question. Neal Martin remarks ‘make no mistake, 2015 is a great vintage’, whilst Steen Ohman of WineHog proclaimed ‘ I have never tasted anything like the very best 2015s’. With demand for Burgundy growing rapidly over the past few years, we believe that 2015s present investors and collectors with a great opportunity to secure a number of the most celebrated producers and their highest quality cuvees at first release.

This paper examines the long march towards maximal wine quality which started before the beginning of the Christian era. In the Middle-Ages, the Cistercian monks brought up the notion of terroir which eventually led to the AOC system (Protected Designation of origin) in 1935. Burgundy is also blessed with good farming land. Furthermore, the production of quality vegetables, fruits and meat contributed to the birth of its regional cuisine. However, it was not until the beginning of the 20th century that Burgundy’s original gastronomy gained recognition. It should be noted that this process was rather laborious. The advent of tourism introduced French and foreign visitors to the region’s lifestyle. With UNESCO’s listing of the vineyards of Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits as part of the world’s heritage and the development of wine tourism, Burgundy intends, at long last, to capitalize on its assets.

In Burgundy, the word "Climat" refers to a named, specific vineyard site, a parcel or plot of land whose limits have been determined over several centuries. Each of them has its own history, produces wines with a distinct character and taste and keeps its own place in the hierarchy of the Burgundy crus; some have illustrious names like Chambertin, Romanée-Conti, Clos de Vougeot, Montrachet, Corton, Musigny... It shares borders with Pucelles (1er Cru) and Les Enseigneres (Village), and some of the producers that own vines in this site are literally a stone’s throw from these lesser vineyards. Leflaive, the largest owner, always price the Bienvenues a good deal cheaper than the Bâtard, and despite their old vines in the best part of the vineyard, there is seldom the definition or purity that is found in its more illustrious neighbour. Meursault ‘Perrières’ 1er cru; 13.72 ha “At its best it is positively brilliant, certainly comparable to Bienvenues or Bâtard.” Clive Coates MW Commonly recognised as the finest of Meursault’s 1er crus, Perrières is right on the border with Puligny-Montrachet and includes the Clos-des-Perrières, which the Grivault family have sought for years to have promoted to Grand Cru status. In fact it is the wines of Coche-Dury, Guy Roulot and Dominique Lafon that have established this vineyard’s modern day reputation. The vineyard is divided into a number of sections, and it is the ‘Dessous’ section that is considered to yield the finest wines (although Coche-Dury has his vines in the upper part of the site).
