We “come back” from New Year’s (but of course we never went anywhere this year) and we hit the ground running putting together this amazing Burgundy- only auction. And indeed, if we did this right, this day is ONLY Burgundy. You asked for it, you got it. 2020 was a difficult year, but we persevered with 40 auctions $125,000,000 in wine sold ($85m of it at auction) and thousands and thousands of world records set. And we were able to keep doing what we do well, safely, and successfully. Can’t wait to show you what we’ve got in store for 2021! The lots here are simply jaw-dropping in their breadth and depth. DRC, Rousseau, Roumier, Dujac, an enormous selection of Leroy and D’Auvenay, Coche, Liger-Belair, Bachelet and more and more and more. We’ve got truly amazing provenance on some of these lots, too. 1966 DRC with the original receipt back to the Domaine? We got that. A colossal amount of wines in this auction were bought on release too. We’ve got case lots of Truchot and Engel—you don’t see those too often. We’ve got more Burgundy than I’ve seen in a while… 257 bottles of Roumier, 251 bottles of Rousseau, 253 bottles of DRC, and 35 bottles of d’Auvenay, which has to be a reasonably high per- centage of annual production… Of course the one thing we don’t have this year is the opportunity to get together and enjoy a glass of wine during the auction! Soon enough though, soon enough, for my own sanity! I’ve been cooped up like everyone else, training my 4 year old on how to tell the difference between a Bordeaux and a claret, and other fun parlor tricks which will serve her well in college. I hope everyone out there is remaining safe, and drinking well. If you’re like me, your cellar has been depleted at an astonishing rate over the winter. Don’t worry—we can help you to replenish. Cheers, Charles SOMETHING FOR EVERY WINE LOVER (LOTS 593-600 & 1-10) Grand Cru Burgundy? Check. Take your pick, all the bases are covered with this consignment. BURGUNDY ARMAND ROUSSEAU One will get little argument to the assertion that Domaine Armand Rousseau is the finest estate in Gevrey-Chambertin... The vintages of the 1980s and 1990s at Domaine Rousseau have produced one of the greatest runs of profound Burgundy ever witnessed by any estate in the region, with the domaine producing legendary efforts in the widely recognized great years of the span from 1985 to 1999. Their two flagship bottlings of Chambertin and Chambertin “Clos de Bèze” have always ranked amongst the top dozen wines to be found in these vintages. Of the two Grand Crus at the pinnacle of the brilliant portfolio of Rousseau wines, the Chambertin “Clos de Bèze” tends to be the more exotic and spicy of the two wines, with glorious fruit tones of black cherry, plum, blood orange often augmented by notes of Gevrey’s grilled meat, chocolate and exotic spices. The Chambertin is typically the slightly slower wine to unfold, with a more understated profile of plum, red cherry and strawberry, coupled with notes of cocoa powder, coffee, grilled meats and violets… impeccably balanced, tangy and never come across as over-oaked. They are amongst the very greatest red wines to be found in the world. • Complex Burgundy Hierarchy the Hierarchy of Burgundy, to Some, Is Considered Complex
With Burgundy en primeur upon us, Decanter has listed the top Burgundy producers, based on the best known and most expensive as a starting point. Complex Burgundy hierarchy The hierarchy of Burgundy, to some, is considered complex. Burgundy lovers can struggle to learn firstly the commune or village level wine names, then the Grand Cru vineyards and finally the Premier Cru vineyards. A recent piece by journalist John Elmes, who is currently learning about wine for the first time with the WSET, was in high contrast to the in-depth piece by Benjamin Lewin MW on Burgundian classification. It served as a reminder of the breadth of knowledge needed to understand the Burgundy classification system. Burgundy producer types Due to this complexity, finding your favourite Burgundian producers can be much more fruitful in the long term when purchasing wine. This, once again, is not a simple as it sounds. The Burgundian wine trade is split in two between growers and négociants. This has arisen due to a law attributed to Napoleonic times – the laws of equal inheritance. When applied to the vineyards of Burgundy, over time, it has meant that individual growers may only own a small row of vines.

  • Pricing and Fees in Auction Platforms with Two-Sided Entry
Discussion Paper PRICING AND FEES IN AUCTION PLATFORMS WITH TWO-SIDED ENTRY Marleen Marra SCIENCES PO ECONOMICS DISCUSSION PAPER No. 2020-02 Pricing and fees in auction platforms with two-sided entry Marleen Marra∗ December 2019 Abstract This paper presents, solves, and estimates the first structural auction model with seller selection. This allows me to quantify network effects arising from endogenous bidder and seller entry into auction platforms, facilitating the es- timation of theoretically ambiguous fee impacts by tracing them through the game. Relevant model primitives are identified from variation in second-highest bids and reserve prices. My estimator builds off the discrete choice literature to address the double nested fixed point characterization of the entry equilib- rium. Using new wine auction data, I estimate that this platform's revenues increase up to 60% when introducing a bidder discount and simultaneously in- creasing seller fees. More bidders enter when the platform is populated with lower-reserve setting sellers, driving up prices. Moreover, I show that mean- ingful antitrust damages can be estimated in a platform setting despite this two-sidedness. (JEL codes: D44, C52, C57, L81) Keywords: auctions with entry, two-sided markets, nonparametric identification, estimation, nested fixed point ∗Sciences Po, Department of Economics. • Bidding Strategy and Auction Design
16 ■ Bidding Strategy and Auction Design UCTIONS AS MECHANISMS for selling goods and services date back to ancient Greece and Rome, where slaves and wives were commonly bought and sold at well-known public auction sites. Although the auction waned as a sales mechanism for several centuries after the fall of the Roman Em- pire,A it regained popularity in eighteenth-century Britain and has been a com- mon, if not ubiquitous, method of commerce since that time. Many thousands of people now make purchases at online auctions every day, and some may buy other items by way of mechanisms that are not even recognized as auctions. Despite this long history, the first formal analysis of auctions dates only to 1961 and the path-breaking work of Nobel Prize winner William Vickrey. In the decades that followed, economists have devoted considerable energy to devel- oping a better understanding of sales by auction, from the standpoint of both buyers (bidding strategy) and sellers (auction design). We cover both topics and provide a primer on auction rules and environments in this chapter. Technically, the term “auction” refers to any transaction where the final price of the object for sale is arrived at by way of competitive bidding. Many dif- ferent types of transactions fit this description. For example, the historic Filene’s Basement department store in Boston used a clever pricing strategy to keep cus- tomers coming back for more: it reduced the prices on items remaining on the racks successively each week until either the goods were purchased or the price got so low that it donated the items to charity.

  • OLIVIER RIVIÈRE Gabaxo Rioja
OLIVIER RIVIÈRE Gabaxo Rioja With just shy of twenty hectares of vineyards that are rented, farmed or owned outright in Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja, Rioja Alavesa and Arlanza, and splitting his time between his own wines and those of Bodegas Lacus, it would be a gross understatement to say that Olivier Rivière is a busy man. Originally lured to Spain in 2004 by Telmo Rodriguez to convert his vineyards to biodynamics, Olivier came to appreciate the rich history of Rioja, and the diversity of its soils and grape varieties. In 2006 he started his own project and owing to the high cost of land in Rioja he traded his farming abilities for access to grapes from the best sites he could find. In 2009 he joined Luis Arnedo at Bodegas Lacus and found a more permanent home for his growing portfolio of wines. ORIGIN Olivier, as you might guess, is not Spanish but French. We was born and Spain raised in Cognac, studied enology (with an emphasis on biodynamic farming practices) in Bordeaux and gained practical experience there and in APPELLATION Burgundy.
