STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Brittany Lines Brittany Lines is a standout quarter 6 students and volunteer. Her inspiration and desire to be a nurse is drawn from her dad, a leukemia survivor who survived cancer twice, and was a bone marrow transplant recipient. Brittany founded the Love Your Melon campus crew at DSN. This nationwide, non-profit organization raises money through apparel-based sales and is committed to giving a hat to every child battling cancer in America. Campus crews get to surprise kids who are fighting cancer with adventure packed days, including trips to the zoo and to Denver Outlaws games. In her nursing career, Brittany aspires to be a pediatric oncology nurse and make a diference in the life of brave kids battling cancer.

Julie Starr Assistant Professor Julie Starr was a NICU nurse at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, Texas. Additionally, Professor Starr has extensive experience as a clinical research nurse for The Fabre Clinic in Houston, TX and Denver Drug Research in Denver CO. Professor Starr is the new Mental Health instructor and hopes to convey that mental health nursing will impact a nurse in any venue he/she works in. Professor Starr intends to keep the class interesting through personal stories and will share her own unique knowledge with students from her work in pharmaceutical clinical trials with psychotropic medications in the treatment of depression, anxiety, OCD, and schizophrenia. "I want all my students to know that I think it is a privilege to walk with them on their journey to becoming a professional RN", says Professor Starr. Students enjoyed a 'no studying' SNA social night at Howl at the Moon on Nov 4! Featured Department: Clinical Ofce The Clinical Ofce welcomes a new director, Marcee Sutton. The department is stafed with 3 facilitators: Lindsay Seizys for Medical Surgical 1 and II clinical placements; Gail Smart for Mental Health, Community Health, and Leadership clinical placements; and Michelle Beringer for OB, Pediatrics, and Capstone clinical placements. Dan Dwyer is focused on clinical facility contracts. Students are reminded to never contact clinical sites for placements; any contacts should be given to the clinical ofce. The clinical ofce will be visiting cohorts the last week of the quarter to conduct a clinical orientation for the upcoming quarter's clinical. The $300 fee is still in efect for a makeup clinical due to student driven issues. The fee is necessary to cover extensive paperwork, instructors, hotels, and other "moving pieces" that result from a student missing a clinical. "To escape the fee, the student needs to bring documentation that he/she was seen by a healthcare provider for that illness" says Dr. Hill, Dean of Nursing. New sites are constantly being added and removed for the best interests of DSN student education. New sites include Denver Health outpatient clinics, PowerBack Acute Rehabilitation Center in Lafeyette, Fresenius Dialysis center in Northern Colorado, 9News Health Fairs, and HealthONE sites.

Grand Total 603 Answer: The classrooms The DSN student body is 14% male. were painted in March, We have the highest percentage of 2016. The rest of the male students compared to any other building has been painted in nursing school in Colorado! the last 4 years. Question: Can there be hooks in the bathrooms on the walls outside the stall doors for backpacks and coats? Answer: We have considered this and found that there is not enough room in the bathroom between the wall and the stalls to remain ADA compliant if we add the hooks.

Question: Can the common areas be cleaned better? Answer: We have spoken to our cleaning crew on several occasions over the past 60 days regarding the cleanliness of the common areas. There has been minimal improvement. We sent a formal letter to the company asking for compliance from the cleaning crew. If they don’t improve, we have been investigating other cleaning options.

Question: Can remediation over break and a final chance to re-test be ofered to students who fail Dosage Calculation? Answer: At one point in time students were only allowed one opportunity to pass. This has been modified to three attempts. Remediation is also ofered after each attempt. The final opportunity is given prior to the last day a student can withdraw from a course. Based on prior student performance, we believe that three attempts is a fair amount.

Question: Is there a simulation for capstone? Answer: Currently there is no simulation for capstone. Efective next quarter, the simulation competencies that were a part of transitions will now be held during the capstone quarter.

Question: Is simulation time for students increasing? Answer: We are not increasing the simulation time (even though the state allows it, we do not have a need to do it).

Question: What is the process when the sim lab mannequins break? Answer: We replace any broken or damaged equipment as soon as it occurs but at times we have to wait for parts orders. As of 11/1/16 all mannequins are functioning properly.
