GAME PREVIEW: Boston Cannons vs. Denver Outlaws

The matchup: In their final regular season game, the Cannons will play the undefeated Denver Outlaws.

Cannons Record: 2-2 Last Time Out: The Cannons lost a frustrating one to the Connecticut Hammerheads last night. Boston looked like the better team through two quarters with a 5-2 halftime lead, but it stumbled in the second half before losing 11-8. The Cannons couldn’t get through a hot goalie in Sean Sconone and made some self-inflicted errors that cost them in the end. Who to Watch: Mark Cockerton was held to a single assist last night and if there’s one player on offense who could turn things around for Boston, it’s Cockerton. He’s taken over games in the past and is a key team leader, so he’s a player who could have a big game tonight.

Outlaws Record: 4-0 Last Time Out: The Outlaws played the on Wednesday in a highly anticipated rematch of last year’s championship game. Denver won 13-12 in overtime off a Brian Kormondy goal to remain the only undefeated team in the league. The game certainly lived up to its billing. Who to Watch: Daniel Bucaro and Ryan Lee are two players who are just having ridiculous seasons, with 12 and 17 goals respectively. Beside them, another player to watch is Mikie Schlosser. He’s scored just three goals but he’s a fast two-way middie who can dodge and shoot, and he’s had some success against Boston in the past.

Analysis: It’s the final day of the 2020 regular season and there’s three teams still fighting for the last two playoff spots — the Cannons, Hammerheads and Philadelphia Barrage. The Cannons will clinch a spot if they beat the Outlaws tonight or if the Hammerheads beat the Chesapeake Bayhawks. However, if Chesapeake and Denver both win, the Cannons are out. Tonight’s game has a lot at stake for Boston.

Not only is this a rematch of last year’s semifinals matchup, it’s likely to be the toughest game of the season for the Cannons, who have been inconsistent this week. They’ve played from behind in three games, pulling off comeback wins twice. Last night, the Cannons gave up a lead they couldn’t retake. They can’t afford to do either of these things against Denver, which has a chance at an undefeated regular season.

Obviously, if Connecticut wins the 4 p.m. game, the Cannons can breathe a little bit because their spot will be secured. Still, a victory over Denver would pay huge dividends for the Cannons, as going into the playoffs on a win is a whole lot better than stumbling in after two straight losses.

Faceoff between Boston and Denver is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
