Boston Cannons Game Notes WEEK EIGHT PREVIEW: BOSTON CANNONS VS Page 8

Where: Veterans Memorial Stadium (Quincy, MA) Who: Boston Cannons vs Atlanta Blaze When: Saturday, July 20, 5:02 PM EST Watch: NBC Sports Boston Cannons look to go 2-2 against Atlanta in Boston since 2016

QUINCY, MA - After a long three-game road trip, the Cannons return home this weekend to host the Atlanta Blaze in the final game before the All-Star Break. This will be a rematch of last week's spirited game between these two teams, as Cannons picked up their first win over the Blaze since 2016 in dramatic fashion.

The Cannons led 5-0 in the first quarter, but allowed a seven-goal Atlanta run from late in the first to the last 1:12 of the second. Down 10-7 early in the third, the Cannons stormed back with ten straight goals to take a 17-10 lead. However, the Blaze countered with a four-goal run in the last 7:11 of the fourth, which included two 2-point goals from Dylan Maher. This pulled the Blaze within one goal of evening the score.

With just a one-goal lead in the final minute, the Cannons were penalized for a clearing violation and goaltender Nick Marrocco was sent to the bench to serve the penalty. Tate Boyce, who has been Marrocco's backup, had not played one minute of game action all season. Still, he came up with arguably the biggest save of the year, stopping a point-blank shot from Shayne Jackson to preserve the Cannons victory.

Mark Cockerton scored four goals to extend his team-lead to 24 goals on the year. Connor O'Hara and Challen Rogers each posted hat-tricks, and long-stick midfielder Ryland Rees took command on defense, finishing the game with nine groundballs and three caused turnovers.

The Blaze suffered two one-goal losses last week. The first was an 18-17 loss to the , a game in which Zach Currier scored the game-winner with two seconds left on the clock. The second was the 17-16 loss to the Cannons. Brendan Sunday scored four goals and Shayne Jackson scored three to lead the Atlanta offense, while defenseman Liam Byrnes scooped three groundballs and caused two turnovers on the other end of the field.

Jackson currently leads the Blaze with 33 points and Randy Staats is second with 32. Overall, the top-five point getters on Alanta—Jackson, Staats, Bryan Cole, Tommy Palasek, and Sunday—all gave the Cannons some trouble in Week Seven.

This weekend's rematch between Atlanta and Boston will likely be as intense as last week's, if not more. The Blaze will be eager to right the ship after falling to 4-4, while the Cannons are looking to add one more victory before the All-Star Break.

Faceoff between the Cannons and Blaze is scheduled for 5pm eastern from Veterans Memorial Stadium in Quincy. You can watch the game live on NBC Sports Boston or stream online for free on MajorLeagueLacrosse.com.

Mark Cockerton opened the scoring with his 21st of the season, and then assisted on the second goal scored by John Uppgren. Challen Rogers put the Cannons up 3-0 on a diving effort for his eighth of the season. Connor O'Hara scored the next two goals for Boston, with the second coming on a rebound attempt after longpole Ryland Rees fired a hard shot intro Chris Madalon from behind the 2-point arc.

Randy Staats ended the Cannons' first quarter run with his first goal of the game, getting Atlanta on the board with 6:28 left in the first. The Blaze then scored three of the next four goals to cut Boston's lead to 6-4 after one quarter of play.

After the Cannons scored the first five goals of the first quarter, the Blaze mirrored that performance in the second. Brendan Sunday scored 5:45 into the quarter and then tied the game at six with his third of the game less than five minutes later. Atlanta took its first lead of the night after Liam Byrnes rushed the field in transition and passed to Shayne Jackson, who buried his first of the game with 4:29 left in the second. Bryan Cole and Jackson scored the next two goals before Cockerton ended Atlanta's run after burying a Will Sands pass with 1:12 left. The Blaze outscored the Cannons 5-1 in the second quarter to take a 9-7 lead into halftime.

Christian Mazzone scored 3:06 into the third quarter to extend Atlanta's lead to 10-7, but it would be the last Blaze goal for a while. O'Hara scored his third of the night 1:15 later to make it 10-8, then Rogers and Cal Dearth scored the next two goals to even the score. Cockerton scored his third of the game to give the Cannons the lead with 3:13 left in the second. Kyle Jackson buried his 13th of the season to put Boston up 12-10 with 40 seconds remaining in the third and drew a penalty since he was hit on the play.

Cockerton scored his fourth of the game on the man-up, as he swept the ball in a hockey-like manner through Madalon as time expired. This gave the Cannons a 13-10 lead going into the final quarter of regulation.

Zed Williams and Zach Goodrich opened the scoring in the fourth with their 12th and second goals of the season, respectively. Cockerton notched his fifth of the game 1:09 after Goodrich's tally following a Matt Bertrams transition rush, and Rogers buried his hat-trick goal shortly after to extend Boston's run to ten goals.

Sunday scored his fourth of the game for Atlanta to make to 17-11 with 7:11 left in the fourth, ending the Cannons' run. Blaze attackman Dylan Maher then scored his first of two 2-point goals with 4:48 left, cutting the score to 17-13. Shayne Jackson scored his hat-trick goal to make it 17-14 at 2:30 before Maher buried his second 2-pointer to make it a one-goal game with 1:57 to go.

Alex Woodall won the ensuing faceoff, but Atlanta called a timeout before it could establish a transition opportunity. Upon returning to play, the Cannons gained control of the ball when PT Ricci raced to a groundball with 1:20 left, allowing Head Coach Sean Quirk to call a timeout.

When play resumed, the Cannons were penalized for not getting the ball out of their end within twenty seconds, which gave the ball right back to Atlanta. Furthermore, Marrocco was sent to the sidelines for the penalty and Tate Boyce took his place in goal. Boyce, a Providence College alum and offseason pickup, had not played a single minute of game action all season. Yet, he pretty much saved the day for the Cannons. Staats fed a wide-open Jackson in front of the goal, but the Blaze attackman was stonewalled by Boyce in a highlight reel save.

The Cannons gained possession of the ball and ran out the clock to secure a much-needed victory. Things were looking a bit grim after losing the 5-0 lead in the first and trailing at halftime, but the Cannons came out in the third quarter looking like a completely different team. The ten-goal run certainly helped, but the defense held off the Atlanta offense in an admirable performance in the second half. Rees led the way in that department with nine groundballs and three caused turnovers.

With the win, the Cannons posted a 2-1 record on their three-game road trip and improve to 5-2 on the season. They return home next Saturday to host the Blaze at 5pm at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Boston Cannons Game Notes NEW YORK AVOIDS SEASON SWEEP, TAKE DOWN CANNONS 15-12 Page 10

Dearth, Sands, O'Hara each have three points to lead Cannons

HEMPSTEAD, NY - The Cannons held an 8-5 lead at halftime, but the Lizards stormed back with a 10-goal second half to earn the victory at James M. Shuart Stadium. With the loss, the Cannons fall to 4-2 on the season, tied with Atlanta for second place in the Major League Lacrosse (MLL).

Both NEw York and Boston traded leads in the first half, but the Cannons came out of the first 15 minutes with a 4-3 advantage. John Uppgren scored his first of two goals at 10:53 to give Boston a 1-0 lead, but Nick Galasso tied it less than a minute later and put the Lizards up 2-1 at 8:47. The Cannons then scored three of the next four goals, as Challen Rogers, Cal Dearth, and Uppgren all found the back of the net before the quarter ended.

The Lizards tied it 3:17 into the second as Molloy scored his third of the game. He drew Tim Edwards and Justin Pugal, but dodged around both of them to find the back of the cage again.

The Cannons responded with four straight goals from Connor O'Hara, Zed Williams, Will Sands, and Kyle Jackson to take an 8-4 lead. Justin Reh ended Boston's run late in the second after Rob Pannell intercepted the ball at the midfield line and started a quick transition opportunity, which ended with Reh's goal. Nonetheless, the Cannons went into halftime with an 8-5 lead.

The third quarter is where the Lizards started to break free. Greg Puskuldjian won the opening faceoff and scored in transition just six seconds in, cutting Boston's lead to 8-6. Pannell scored his first of the game 2:01 into the quarter to pull New York within one. The Lizards then tied it on an impressive goal by Molloy. He beat Pugal to a loose ball in the corner and then powered through Edwards and Matt Dziama before firing the shot through Nick Marrocco.

Molloy's fourth of the game was followed by another goal from Puskuldjian and two goals from Ryan Walsh. O'Hara ended New York's seven-goal run with 2:46 left in the third after beating Austin Kaut for his second of the game. But the Lizards scored again just 32 seconds later, with Galasso scoring his second of the game. Overall, the Lizards outscored the Cannons 7-1 in the third to carry a 12-9 lead into the fourth.

Pannell scored his second of the game 45 seconds into the fourth to extend New York's lead to 13-9. The Cannons made it a three-goal game again when Mark Cockerton got on the scoresheet with his 20th of the season, but the Lizards held off the Cannons in the last ten minutes to get the win.

The Cannons looked good going into halftime, but the Lizards outscored them 10-4 in the final two quarters in their comeback win. New York's defense was much better in the second half and Kaut looked confident in the cage. Puskuldjian was also solid at the faceoff-X, winning 18-of-31 against Nate Farrell, who was making his Cannons debut in place of the injured Kevin Reisman.

While the Cannons will certainly be taking some things out of today's game, they can't dwell on the loss for too long as they are right back in action on Saturday in Atlanta, where they'll conclude this three-game road trip against the Blaze.
