Since 1961, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver has been helping kids from tough neighborhoods stay out of trouble, stay in school, and succeed in life. Not just after school hangouts, the Clubs are places where young people come to learn, do homework, develop social citizenship skills, express themselves creatively, and participate in sports. For a membership fee of just $2 per year, any young person between the ages of 6 and 18 can become a member at Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver. In the safe and positive atmosphere of a Club, members have the freedom to choose from more than fifty structured programs in six core areas designed to give them a sense of competency, usefulness, belonging and empowerment. • Character and Leadership Development • Education and Career Development • Technology • Health and Life Skills • The Arts • Sports, Fitness and Recreation 1 Be great. These encouraging words from some of Boys & Girls Clubs’ most well-known alums – Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver is committed to deepening our impact on the young people we serve, but what exactly does that including Denzel Washington, General Wesley Clark, Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Shaquille O’Neal – are more than just words of wisdom mean? We have undertaken intensive research efforts and developed a strategic plan for increasing our effectiveness and furthering for today’s youth. They’re a call to action for all of us. our mission. BGCMD has identified four fundamental areas – impact with strategic growth, community involvement, strong organization, public trust – that establish our priorities and focus for the future, and will increase our positive impact on youth outcomes. At Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver, we have been working hard during this recession to be strategic, be thoughtful, be inventive and collaborative. 2008 was a year of dramatic change and tremendous achievement at Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver. We experienced a transition in leadership and watched with pride as local Club member Shonnetta Henry was named National Youth of the Year by Boys & Girls Clubs of America. At the same time, we worked diligently to provide the highest level of quality in our programming while continuing to trim costs and expand our resource development efforts in light of economic changes. In December, we finalized a multi-year strategy that will carry our organization into the future. We redefined our areas of focus, and developed a baseline for outcome measurements. We refined our growth strategies and created new processes to articulate the Playbook Touchdown impact of programs. Suite 310 • Washington, D.C. 20009-1039 (202) 462-6262 • fax (202) 265-9548 • http://www.consumersunion.org SUMMARY Consumers Union1 welcomes this opportunity to testify before the Senate Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights Subcommittee regarding the proposed merger between the News Corporation (“News Corp.”) and Hughes Electronics Corporation’s satellite television unit DIRECTV (“DirecTV”). Given the current concentration in the media marketplace, as well as the further concentration that will result from the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC’s) recent relaxation of media ownership rules, we believe that the proposed merger between network and cable giant News Corp. and DirecTV, the largest direct broadcast satellite (DBS) service provider, will further increase prices for consumers and decrease the diversity of voices in the media marketplace. Today, consumers are not receiving the fruits that a competitive cable and satellite marketplace should deliver, and consumers are likely to suffer further harm if antitrust officials do not impose substantial conditions on the proposed deal between News Corp. and DirecTV. Since passage of the 1996 Telecommunications Act, cable rates have risen over 50%,2 and FCC data show that satellite competition is not creating downward pressure on cable rates. Despite the promise for more diversity from new technologies such as the Internet and satellite, a mere five media companies control nearly the same prime time audience shares as the Big Three networks did 40 years ago.3 Unfortunately, the market for news production and distribution is becoming more concentrated.

Vogel, Chair Multinational corporations (MNCs) are at the heart of today‘s global economy, but their effects on the politics of advanced industrialized countries have not been studied systematically. This dissertation analyzes the case of Japan, a country most likely to reveal foreign MNCs‘ influence. Japan developed for most of its history with an extremely low presence of foreign MNCs, but it experienced a dramatic influx from the mid-1990s, particularly in long-protected sectors at the core of its postwar development model of capitalism. The dissertation explains an observed divergence in the political strategies of foreign MNCs in Japan—disruptive challenges to existing policymaking processes and norms of government-business interactions, versus insider strategies, in which MNCs worked within established organizations and prevailing modes of policymaking.

What originally began as a boys only tournament was 2 Tournament Schedule later expanded to feature girls in 1981 and the event has flourished since. The host Farmington boys bas- 3 Tournament Brackets ketball team boasts the most championships in tournament history with 18, but the Tigers are in search of 4 Girls Rosters their first title since 2013. On the girls side, the Tigers once again hold the mark for most tourney titles with 5 Girls Tournament Records eight, but the neighboring Nute Rams have captured seven crowns of their own, including three straight. 6 Girls All-Tournament Teams The host Tigers are looking for their first girls title since 2009. 8 Boys Rosters IT’S ALL IN THE NAME 10 Boys Tournament Records In 1979, Farmington boys basketball head coach Mike Lee, who also served as the high school athletic 11 Boys All-Tournament Teams director, was instrumental in starting this very tournament. In 2008, upon Mr. Lee’s retirement from the 13 All-Time Championship Results Farmington School District, the Farmington Athletic Booster Club voted unanimously to re-name the Farm- ington Christmas Tournament to the Mike Lee Holiday Basketball Bash in recognition of his 32 years of THE LEE FILE service to Farmington as a coach, teacher, athletic director, principal and friend.
