This has been quite a summer. Too From the prez much rain to start with, not enough rain now; heat with humidity; the occasional beautiful day. But we still love summer! This has been a busy year so far for our club.

We kicked off with Midwest Horse Fair, had a wonderful show, are having a great parade year (with more to come,) and course we have our meetings to look forward to. Speaking of meetings, we are holding an August meeting this year, primarily to discuss the field day but we’ll conduct other business as well.

The field day is next up on the agenda. The committee has been working very hard to put on a first rate event. Many thanks to Lauraine Smith, Carol Pasbrig, Karla Gay and Marie Stewart for putting so time in for the event. They have been a great help to me and have cracked the proverbial whip if I need it! Take a look at the article in this newsletter for more info.

If you have not yet donated a door prize or silent auction item for the field day, please consider helping us out. If you have donated already – THANK YOU!

Have a wonderful summer and I look forward to seeing you in August.

SEPTEMBER. Where has the summer gone? It’s 70 degrees out with a cold wind and I have to go with the layered look. We had a good meeting on the 22nd, and heard a lot about the show, and what’s happening on Horse Council.

The field day is nearly ready to go, and we anticipate a good turnout and lots of fun. Thank you to everyone who has supported this event (I think its most of the club)! There are three more parades this year, so dust off your saddle and ride with us.

4 WITWEN FOURTH OF JULY PARADE REPORT. 75 degrees, very little wind. This is always an early parade, starting at 10:30. The light breeze and total absence of firecrackers anywhere, made for a lovely parade! A truck and trailer from Tuck-a-Way campgrounds, driven by Carmen Sandmire, was parked in the driveway to the park where we gather. Carmen Dederich had gotten them to up a couple of feet but no more than that! We all had to negotiate between the culvert on the left and their bumper to our right. Thank goodness there were no collisions with them or the culvert! Chrissy helped most of us with this maneuver. Linda Jung, Chrissy Pfau and Carmen Dederich arrived first. Linda helped apply ribbons to the horses while we quickly saddled. Then she bagged up some coloring pages to hand out to the children on the route. Liz Nevers was to ride Flashdance this day and was kind enough to saddle and hoof black both of my horses. Chrissy Pfau (Kirch) carried the chiropractic banner for husband Don's practice in Sauk City. Katie Truchten and brother Brian carried our Morgan banner. Liz Nevers on Ken-Dar Flashdance carried the club flag and Darcy Overturf on Ken-Dar Tamara carried the American flag. Kathy Houzner on Devilwood Grand Sophy rode with Annie Randall on Devilwood Alexander Ash. They were followed by Heidi Harvey on Devilwood Knight's Circus. She was shadowed by Luke Wentzal and Beth Anne Heyerman due to Kasey's parade debut this day. Carmen Dederich led two year old RB Dream Come True aka Rosetta. Addie Clement rode Remi with Taylor Weyard on Cody. Melissa Nolden rode Pippen. The last three riders and their horses come from Devils Lake Farm. Heidi had a wonderful ride on the young KC. We chatted under the shade trees while waiting for the parade to finish. We had an easy ride back to our trailers, then made our plans for lunch. Half of us stayed for the chicken Barbecue, but by the time we arrived at the barbecue, the chicken was all gone! Brats and pies were all that was left. Linda Jung followed me to PF. The following weekend I discovered that my cousin's wife had followed me to the parade in the morning, observed the trouble I had with my trailer lights and stayed behind me all the way to C. Darcy

5 BARABOO BIG TOP PARADE

Saturday * July 25, 2015 * 2 P.M.

Under a blazingly hot July sun, nine Wisconsin Morgan Club horses and friends pranced down Broadway and around the square in Baraboo’s 3rd Annual Big Top Parade. Steady in spite of the elephants, enduring the giraffe and marching bands, but thrown into a tizzy by the 3 little bears before the parade started (alas), the unit looked smart and received shouted praise from many of the 25,000 people lining the 9-block parade route. Kudos continued from parade organizers and announcers in the days afterward.

The Baraboo Big Top Parade was part of the Circus Celebration and featured horse-drawn wagons from Circus World’s collection honoring Baraboo’s rich circus heritage. Two days of circus activities included concerts, performances, street shows, food, and other special events.

Darcy Overturf, assisted by Susan McCourt, and Katz Jackson, set up under the trees next to the Baraboo River while Annie Randall made two trips hauling horses (including two pretty, unregistered Morgan mares who were borrowed from their generous owners to help out the Morgan club). Pippin and Honey stood tied to Darcy’s improvised rope hitching rail, waiting for the second load (Alexander, Sophy, and Kasey) to arrive.

Getting horses ready for a parade is not easy, and Jim Harris (who rode Pippin) and Judy Zygmunt (who rode Honey) had both journeyed to Baraboo the previous Wednesday to try out their mounts and help with the clipping and other preparations. (Judy had been recruited by a gentleman from Baraboo who plays the part of Al Ringling in the parade, riding in the original Ringling carriage donated to the museum by the late Vern & Phyllis Albert, founding members of the Wisconsin Morgan Horse Club.)

After waiting for nearly an hour in the holding area, the WMHC moved off with the club banner in front, carried by Marie Stewart and Shirley Koehler, a volunteer who has come to all the parades this year to help our group. Katz’ sister had arrived after a very late flight, doing camera duty all afternoon and heading horses as they were mounted. Sue Lappin and young (horse)friendly Kasey had a ball meeting and greeting the crowd while waiting for the word to go.

The Wisconsin Morgan Horse Club was the 70th unit in an over-80 unit parade. The parade was well-planned and nothing should have gone wrong with bands or scary animals…but a volunteer goofed and decided to hold up the group, letting the giraffe wagon and the three little bears (oh horrors!) pass in front of the horses. The athletic Alexander attempted to launch himself and his hapless rider at this point.

Darcy Overturf led the way with the American flag on her black mare Ken-Dar Tamara with Katz Jackson next to her on Feather Ridge Raven, also a black mare. Katz carried the royal blue club flag. Two chestnuts, Ken-Dar Flashdance (ridden by Susan McCourt) and Devilwood Alexander Ash (ridden by Annie Randall) made up row two. Row three featured two more chestnuts, Pippin (ridden by Jim Harris) and Honey (ridden by Judy Zygmunt). Kathy Houzner on mare Devilwood Grand Sophy, partnered with Sue Lappin on Devilwood Knight Circus (also a bay). The final Morgan in the unit was the black 2- year old mare “Rosetta” (RBD Dream Come True) who was led by her owner Carmin Dederich. The unit was sponsored by Supreme Awards of Baraboo, a company that has provided many ribbons and trophies for WMHC activities. Supreme Awards is owned by Jean Sandmire who judged this year’s Wisconsin Charity Classic Open Horse Show in Jefferson!

Except for two more direct attacks on poor Alexander by parasols run amok (egad!), the unit proceeded through the parade without mishap, in good form, and to the delight of onlookers. None-the-less, it was a relieved and happy group of riders that hung out back at the trailers in the cooling shade, downing ice water before cleaning the NAPA parking lot and heading home.

Thanks to Marie Stewart for running to the aid of everyone in need, to Shirley Koehler who helps us for no reason except that she is really nice, to NAPA for letting us park in their lot twice a year, to Jean Sandmire for sponsoring our unit, to Missy and Daisy who loaned us their horses, to Jim and Judy for climbing aboard horses they didn’t know, to all of the intrepid riders, and especially, to our brave and beautiful Morgans.

The club still is looking for people to help on the ground on Saturday, September 5th in Sauk City and at the huge parade in the Dells on Sunday, September 13. Please consider giving a few hours of your time to this endeavor…our Morgans would love to see your Morgans join the unit as well if possible! Contact Darcy Overturf ([email protected]) or Annie Randall ([email protected]) for more details or just to be talked into doing it!

Members/Guests Present: Debbie Fairbanks, Karla & Sarah Gay, Jim Harris, Jeff Heise, Beth Anne Heyrman, Katz Jackson, Susan McCourt, Darcy Overturf, Carol Pasbrig, Dolores Rohloff, Lauraine Smith, Amy Ziegler, Pat Ziegler

Call to Order: President Beth Anne Heyrman called the meeting to order at 11:27 AM. Introductions were made.

Approval of Minutes: Secretary Katz Jackson shared copies of the May 17, 2015 minutes. Carol Pasbrig made a motion to approve the minutes; Jim Harris seconded. Motion passed.

Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Judy Tate was not present. She shared in advance the checking account was $5721.11 and the CD was $5121.56. The question was raised regarding the length of time the club had the CD and this will be researched and reported in a subsequent meeting.

Executive Committee’s Report: No report-the committee did not meet prior to this meeting.

Committee Reports: Directory/Membership: Debbie Fairbanks reported a correction of Tamra McNamara’s email address on Page 39. It should read as [email protected]. Website/Facebook: Amy Ziegler manages the club’s Facebook and Heidi Harvey-not present on this date-manages the website. Amy reported some confusion between the two Morgan Horse clubs, i.e. WMHC and Barb Holder’s site. She agreed to contact Barb Holder and work toward clarification of the two sites, including that WMHC is the official site in WI. Amy encouraged everyone to visit both WMHC Facebook and the website. There have been some issues getting into the website Dropbox. More follow-up is needed with webmaster, Heidi Harvey. Newsletter: Editor Mary Ellen Gray was not present. She reported having computer issues and there would not be an August newsletter. Historian: Historian Chrissy was not present. No report. Librarian: Librarian Carol Pasbrig reported nothing new in terms of the library. Wisconsin Horse Council (WHC): Representative Jim Harris reported he will serve on the WHC Executive Committee for the next three years. He shared the council’s interest in getting young folks more involved with horses. One example was the Clydesdale Youth/Novice Congress in conjunction with Dane Co. Fair, Madison, WI July 15-19, 2015. It was a new event that offered educational seminars and hands-on learning in preparation for , Hitching, and Riding Classes. More information is available from [email protected]; www.clydesusa.com. It is hoped that our club can also think of more ideas such as the Clydesdale group’s efforts, which proved very successful. Another idea might be to apply for a grant for lessons for teenagers; e.g. $30/hr. for 10 lessons. Jim also noted the recent loss of Gary Steers, Steers Tack,

8 who was very instrumental in developing the Midwest Horse Fair (MHF) and also an active lifelong member of WHC. Jim encouraged all to visit the WHC website and check out news and resources, including articles and videos on topics of interest. Farm Technology Days are this coming Tuesday, August 25-27 at the Statz Brothers Farm, Sun Prairie. The event features a wide variety of exhibits, demonstrations, tours, and educational sessions throughout each day. It is unique and well worth attending. Jim encouraged all to read the August newsletter and also to review grants that are available for different breed organizations. Applications should be completed in fall with notification by spring. Midwest Horse Fair (MHF): Chair Lauraine Smith reported AMHA changed to a stricter application process for grants, which will result in much more work. In terms of club materials, all have been counted and will soon be placed into storage at Heise’s. She encouraged all who need club brochures to contact her as soon as possible before they are packed away for the season. Wisconsin Charity Classic Open Horse Show-Jefferson County Fairgrounds: Chair Jeff Heise reported a net profit of $1032.78 for the show. There was a total of 47 horses, which was down a little from last year and reflected the loss of some folks who had routinely been coming to the previous location at Mandt’s. Seed money in the amount of $700 should remain in the show account for next year. Jeff expressed his willingness to take the lead on it again in 2016. The dates of June 11-12 are still available and the Gypsy group is anxious to join up with the whole show. That would increase attendance on Sunday. More discussion may be needed on the timing of the dressage classes. Jim Harris moved that we sponsor the Charity Horse Show again in 2016 with Jeff Heise as chair. Carol seconded. All were in favor. Motion passed. Two charities were designated for this year, Lifestriders and VETS, and each organization will receive $500. Parades: Darcy reported two parades so far, Fourth of July Parade at Witwen and the July 25th Baraboo Circus Parade. There were some challenges at the Circus Parade, e.g. parasols that flew by and real live circus animals, but overall it went very smoothly. More assistance is needed for the upcoming Tournament of Chips (Cow Chip) Parade in Sauk City on September 5th, the Saturday before Labor Day, including pooper scooper (s). September 20 also offers the Wo-Zha-Wa Festival Parade in Wisconsin Dells. The final parade of the year is the Christmas Light Parade on November 21 in Baraboo. Contact Darcy for more information on the parades and your participation in them. Youth Group: Chair Sarah Ackermann was not present. No report. Karla Gay expressed concern about the lack to date of activities that might be available to youth, including her daughter, Sarah. More follow-up and information is needed from Sarah. Farm Field Day: Beth Anne Heyrman and Lauraine Smith reported on the upcoming club-sponsored Farm Field Day on September 26 at Larsen Acres in Evansville from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Thus far twelve horses and riders/reins-people are lined up, along with draft teams demonstrating plowing, discing and other field activities. There will also be an Amish craftsman, and a number of artisans, including a rug-maker, a wood burner, a quilter, a spinner, and a leather-crafter. There may also be Amish horse-powered ice cream making. The Rock County ambassador for agriculture is invited and the local 4-H group has been contacted. Face painting is planned for 4-H’ers. Magnolia Town Hall will be available for exhibits along with a separate tent for horses. The local FFA will be providing food. There will also be a silent auction run by Carol Pasbrig. Several items were shared on this date and more will be donated prior to the event. Door prizes are planned for every half hour. Set-up will be Friday, September 25th starting at 9:00 AM and all are encouraged to assist in that process. Participants will also be invited to sign up for Larsen Dairy tour with their 5000 cow operation at 3:00 PM. Carol Pasbrig is working to show a DVD/tape with Jerry Coffey being interviewed.

Unfinished Business: None New Business: A megaphone may be needed to communicate with people in warm-up arenas at the Horse Show. All items from MHF have been inventoried;-Lauraine has the list of items. Amy agreed to look for prices for megaphone. No other new business.

Next Meeting: The next meeting is scheduled for October 18th at Carol Pasbrig’s house in Dousman starting at 11:00 AM. It will be a potluck – bring a dish to pass. All are hoping to view the PBS promotional video(s) for older people riding horses. Carol will be featured.

Adjournment: Jeff Heise made a motion to adjourn. Debbie seconded. All were in favor. Meeting adjourned at 12:35 PM. Minutes respectfully submitted by Katz Jackson, Secretary, on August 26, 2015.

Oldfield /KJ Morgaans. We have two very nice colts this year, out of half sisters and both by Hylee’ Galaxy’s Wild Irish. Our bay colt was born in April and he is Oldfield New Horizons (Zeke in the barn) in honor of the Pluto fly-by. He is huge for three months but looks like he will be a very pretty, refined guy with a lot of athletic ability. He was trotting level at three weeks old. Our second colt was born in mid June and appears to be shedding out black. If he turns out to be black, he will be Oldfield Wild Irish (of course) (Irish in the barn). At six weeks old, he is upright, full of personality and straight up to you when you visit him in the field. For those interested in bloodlines, the difference in the pedigrees is the dam’s sire. Both mares are out of our matriarch, Rose, now retired. Zeke’s grandsire on the dam’s side is a Fairfield Fortune son. Irish’s grandsire on the dam’s side is a son of UVM Tennyson. Of course, we also have Iris, a full sister to Zeke, who won the Morgan mare class at the club show in June and who will start under saddle this fall. We are happy with these crosses and will take one or more mares back to Irish next year.

I rode in the Witwen Parade on the 4th of July with lots of help from Anne Randall, her ladies’ horse camp participants, and especially her green, but very good-minded three year old gelding, Kasey. I also appreciated the help on parade day from Beth Anne Heyrman who walked beside me with a lead to make sure both horse and human rookie parade participants made it to the chicken barbecue end of town safely.

Our summer sojourn is coming to an end in early August, but I will be back to help with the Field Day in September and look forward to seeing you then. Heidi Harvey

Warm Greetings From Flower Valley Morgan Farm Though the weather feels more like fall this week, I’m sure the heat of summer will return for a bit more. It has been a busy year here and I can’t remember when I last sent some farm news.

Sadly, we lost a wonderful mare, Kells Moonlight Serenade, at the age of 23 in February. She produced 12 foals for us. Fortunately, thru her son, Kells Above R Xpectations, “Jake”, her legacy continues here. I’m retaining a couple daughters from Jake, and he will be moving north later this year to begin his career and continue as a breeding for some good friends of ours. More on that at a later date. Kells Opportunity Knox 10 We welcomed 3 foals this year – Kells Night At The Rox raf (Kells Above R Xpectations x Bird Flirt GD); Kells Xtreme Eye Kandy raf (Kells Above R Xpectations x Kells Onyx Pearl); and -pictured at about a week of age- Kells Opportunity Knox raf (aka Rex) (Kells Above R Xpectations x Kells Magic In The Heir). We plan to retain Roxie. Kandy and Rex will be offered for sale. Since Jake will be moving north this year, we bred quite a few mares for 2016. We are expecting 5 foals for 2016, but I am offering some bred mares for sale. Been enjoying working with the 2015 foals and also the yearlings. Have had some inquiries about horses for sale and folks will be visiting to check them out.

Though trying to get hay up without rain has been a bit of a challenge again this year, we had a bumper crop so the horses will be eating well this winter. Finishing up 2nd crop and might run out of barn space to store it, but that is not a bad problem to have. I don’t want to rush summer, but fall is definitely my favorite season – I just love sweatshirt weather and watching the horses get all fuzzy. Course I’m not enjoying “burr” season at this moment. Won’t be too long and weaning season will be upon us. Enjoy the rest of summer. Cindy Kells in MN

from the former Tribute Farm. Congratulations to Katryna Endres, who has leased 19-year-old Tony Fennelly as backup to Tony’s do-everything dam, 25-year-old Andre Norton. Marsha

Blue Gable Farm. Katryna is also working with the Blue Gable gelding, Gable’s Phineas T, as a project horse. Finn will be for sale when he has finished ”school.” Also she is bringing a horse to WMHC Field Day in September. Mary Ellen Tony and Andy

Lazycreek Farm. Morning to all Lazycreek farm took 3 horses to the Morgan show in Jefferson and had a great time. We all placed with Lazycreek Porthos Knight, Lignite Emrys and Baroncrest Emelita. We were all pleased with the judge and how well the show was run. Thanks to all for a good time. It was one of my youth’s first time showing and she did very well with Lignite Emrys. We have also been having very successful western dressage clinics all summer. So much to learn and with great success in learning how to control your horse with your body. Lynne Levy has been a real trooper in all her teachings and good advice. We have also been doing many shows and we are placing pretty well. I still have not gotten to ride Emelita in an off-the-farm show. but I am hoping. if is not too hot. to ride her soon , I am not a good Heat person but the horses are fine. It is my fault not hers. Other then that, all is going well at the farm. Thank you to all and have safe and happy trail rides Gary and Claudia Shipshock

bay trotter by Charles Humphreys Magna Charta 58 (Henderson’s Morgan Eagle Jr. 57 x John R. Pritchard’s mare by Giles Scroggins II, 1855-1886.

AKA Macomb Chief; AKA Magna Carta. Bay, left hind ankle white, 14.3 hands, 910 lbs. Foaled May 15, 1855, Utica, Michigan. Breeder: L.W.Voorhees. Owned by Gilbert Butcher, Chicago, Illinois; sold in 1867 to E. G. Marshall, Sturgis, Michigan; in 1873 passed to L. C. Rose, Coldwater, Michigan, and in 1874 to L. Dean, Girard, Michigan. Died December 14, 1886, Girard, Michigan. T 2:31. Carried 4x to Justin Morgan: 1 each through Woodbury 7, Bulrush 6, Brutus 2 and the James Hale Mare; 23.44% of Justin Morgan blood. 8 Generation Coefficient of Inbreeding: 0.827121734619141%. Pedigree in Wallace’s American Stud-Book [1867], vI, p982. Sired 30 2:30 trotters; 26 race winners; 2 ten-race winners; 1 fifty-race trotter. Registered Morgan progeny: 15 colts, 2 fillies.

Magna Charta’s entry in Volume I of The American Morgan Horse Register quoted two Michigan Morgan breeders: E. G. Newhall wrote: “He was always so lofty, and the faster he went the larger he looked. … . The record given him is 2:31, but it should be 2:28 ½, which he made in a race against Cooley, that he won, at Madison, Wisconsin, 1867”. Mr. L. Dean of Girard, Michigan (Magna Charta’s final owner), wrote of him: “He was one of the handsomest horses in harness I have ever seen and took the prize both for speed and beauty wherever shown. Could he have had the advantages of training that horses now possess I am persuaded that few if any could have out-trotted him. He retained all his courage till the day of his death and was sick only two hours.”

Hannah D. was Magna Charta's best racehorse, but she was by no means his only one. He got thirty trotters, who won altogether 121 races. Three of these, Judge Withy, P. H. Baker and David B. were out of mares by Hero. Twenty-seven of his daughters produced trotting winners. One of the best of these was Belle Keller 2:31 1/2, who produced Lizzie Keller, a little brown mare who weighed only a little over 800 pounds, yet managed to win 16 races and make her way onto the standard list. There may be some degree of retribution in her lack of size. Early Morgan breeders sought the larger horse, continued to do so for almost a century. Morgan Eagle was a big horse, as was his best son, yet the pride of the Eagle line was Magna Charta, who weighed 900 pounds. His best daughter weighed little more, his best grand-daughter even less, but somehow, the loss must have been only bone and muscle. It surely could not have been Morgan heart, for they all had full weight there—“Pedigrees”, TMH, Jan-Feb 1956, p13, 34.

Magna Charta’s blood comes down to today’s Morgans through Katie Hughes 03293 (Knox Morgan x the unregistered brown Morgan mare Daisy Hughes [Jupiter 4902 x Thomas Hughes’ Queen, a mare by a son of Ebony Bashaw])—a

Reata Goddess 15 great-great-great-great-great-granddaughter, and the 2nd dam of Polly Forrest X-05304. This line comes down, among others, to Hotspur’s Red Rowl (2014 World Champion CDE Marathon). Magna Charta’s blood also comes down through his great-great- great-great-great grandson Winterset 7403, whose descendants include Farceur’s Fool’s Gold (Breyer model, now standing in Sweden) & The Master’s Touch (4x World Park Saddle Champion).
