Expert Survey on Ethnonationalism in Party Competition

Thank you very much for taking the time to participate in our Expert Survey on Ethnonationalism in Party Competition. Your readiness to share your expertise with us is of crucial importance to our project.

Yours sincerely,

Edina Szöcsik and Christina Zuber

Instructions

We are interested in the positions of political parties in Bulgaria on several issue dimensions. We are kindly asking you to share with us your judgment on the position of these parties relative to that of their competitors.

Please note that this is a cross-country survey that covers all European democracies. The 20 questions of the survey are the same for each country.

Please base your answers on the stance of the party leadership (party president and executive committee) in 2016.

Many of the parties we are interested in are small players and it can be hard to find out what exactly they offer to the voter.

In case you are unsure about a party's position on a certain issue dimension, please do not hesitate to tick the box: “no answer” that will always be provided.

In case you know that the party simply has no position on a topic we ask about, please tick the box: “no position”.

Finally, at the end of the survey we provide space for any additional comments you might have.

Confidentiality

We will of course treat your answers confidentially. In our final dataset available for public use, it will not be possible to link individual answers to an expert's name. We will publish a list of all experts consulted in a separate file to document our data collection. This file will only contain your name and institutional affiliation.

Libertarian vs. Authoritarian Values

13. Parties can be classified in terms of their views on democratic freedoms and rights. “Libertarian” or “postmaterialist” parties (0) favor expanded personal freedoms, for example, access to abortion, active euthanasia, same-sex marriage, or greater democratic participation. “Traditional” or “authoritarian” (10) parties often reject these ideas; they value order, tradition, and stability, and believe that the government should be a firm moral authority on social and cultural issues.

(This question is based on question 12 of the Chapel Hill Expert Survey of 2006 (Liesbet Hooghe, Ryan Bakker, Anna Brigevich, Catherine de Vries, Erica Edwards, Gary Marks, Jan Rovny, Marco Steenbergen (2010), "Reliability and Validity of Measuring Party Positions: The Chapel Hill Expert Surveys of 2002 and 2006", European Journal of Political Research, (4): 684-703.)
