New technology brings with it a new vocabulary and collection of symbols. Following are some of the common icons and terms used in describing electric vehicle (EV) specifications, infrastructure and related expressions.
Icon Key
Battery electric vehicle (BEV) – Vehicle is powered exclusively by electricity. EVs charge via 120V, 240V or DC fast charge power outlets, store power in onboard batteries and produce zero tailpipe emissions.
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) – Vehicle is powered by electricity and/or gasoline, switching between fuel sources as needed. PHEVs are charged via 120V, 240V or DC fast charge power outlets and use gasoline for extended range.
Hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (HFCV) – Vehicle is powered by combining hydrogen gas with oxygen to produce electricity that propels the vehicle’s engine. HFCVs are fueled at hydrogen charging stations and produce zero harmful tailpipe emissions.
Red Clean Air Vehicle decal – Sticker permits travel in California’s furthest left carpool lane and is available to purchased or leased cars meeting California’s super ultra-low emission vehicle (SULEV) standard for exhaust emissions and the federal inherently low-emission vehicle (ILEV) evaporative emission standard, as well as vehicles that meet the state’s enhanced advanced technology partial zero-emission (enhanced AT PZEV) vehicles or transitional zero emission vehicle (TZEV) standard. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) fueled vehicles may also qualify. The expiration date for red stickers extends to January 1, 2022. Terms
DC fast charging (DCFC) – The fastest method of electric vehicle (EV) charging. With 480-volt, 3-phase AC input, EVs receive a full charge in about 30 minutes.
Electric vehicle (EV) miles – refers to the range of an electric vehicle (EV) battery. This can be used to describe the total range of an EV, or, in the case of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, the electric range capacity of the battery before the gasoline engine kicks in.
Manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) – the price that manufacturers suggest a product should be listed when the price is visible to consumers.
Miles per gallon (MPG) – a qualitative measurement of gallons of gasoline consumed to miles traveled Derived by dividing the miles traveled by the gallons of gasoline used.
Miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) – a unit of measurement used to compare miles per gallon (MPG) in gas-powered engines to energy consumed in electric-powered engines by reducing both gas and electricity to their base units of power: British thermal units (BTUs) of heat produced by burning one gallon of gas and kilowatt-hours (kWhs) of electricity to generate the same amount of heat. One gallon of gasoline produces the same amount of energy as 34 kWh.
Total miles – refers to the total range of a vehicle. It can describe the total range of an electric vehicle (EV), or, in the case of a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, the total range capacity of the battery plus the gasoline range.
