  • Tourism, Seasonality and the Attraction of Youth
19 Tourism, Seasonality and the Attraction of Youth Tara Duncan, Maria Thulemark, and Peter Möller The Myth/s Tourism is often perceived as a saviour to rural parts of the north, creat- ing a myth of tourism as a panacea for development in rural areas, includ- ing mountain tourism destinations in northern Sweden. Tourism often gives hope to small communities and stakeholders, including local and regional government, entrepreneurs and local community groups, who endeavour to support, start and develop tourism industries to become successful, growing tourism destinations. At the same time, rural com- munities are seen as sleepy and unattractive for young adults leading to high rates of out-migration and distorted population development. Whilst strong growth of tourism in rural areas can lead to increased employment with high demand for labour, these new jobs are often sea- sonal. In spite of the acknowledged pluriactivity of those who live in northern areas (Dubois and Carson 2019), the seasonality of these jobs T. Duncan (*) • M. Tulemark • P. Möller Dalarna University, Falun, Sweden e-mail: [email protected] © Te Author(s) 2020 373 L. Lundmark et al. (eds.), Dipping in to the North, https://doi.org/10.1007/978-981-15-6623-3_19 374 T. Duncan et al. gives birth to another myth: that these jobs do not lead to positive com- munity development. Alongside the employment of locals, an infux of (young) seasonal employees, often from other parts of the Sweden, who only stay for a few months, who tend to only spend time with each other, and who pay taxes somewhere else, reafrms the myth that season tour- ism jobs lead to an inevitable lack of connection to the local, rural community.

  • Meyer's Accent Contours Revisited
TMH-QPSR Vol. 44 – Fonetik 2002 Meyer’s accent contours revisited Olle Engstrand1 and Gunnar Nyström2 1Department of Linguistics, Stockholm University 2Institute for Dialectology, Onomastics and Folklore Research (SOFI), Uppsala Abstract Do E.A. Meyer’s tonal word accents contours from the Swedish dialects provide a reliable basis for quantitative analysis? Measurements made on acute and grave tone-peaks in a number of dialects spoken in the province of Dalarna suggested that the timing of grave tonal peaks tended to vary systematically from south-east to north-west. The former dialects had relatively late and the latter relatively early tone-peaks. This finding suggests that Meyer’s accent data may be sufficiently accurate to reflect systematic variation within broad dialect areas. Implications for the historical development of the Dalarna dialects are discussed. Introduction Several decades ago, E.A. Meyer compiled his pioneering survey of tonal word accent contours in 100 Swedish dialects (Meyer 1937, 1954). Pitch curves were automatically generated using a pitch meter that Meyer himself had invented. The original pitch curves are thus likely to be quite accurate. To enhance the dialect-specific tonal characteristics, the original contours were time-normalized, averaged and smoothed by Figure 1. Tonal contours representing the eye. These schematized contours were arranged Central Swedish dialects (Stockholm, upper by province and displayed on charts. panel) and the Dalarna dialects (Leksand, lower The Meyer contours have proved useful in panel). establishing accent-based dialect typologies In this paper, the question is raised whether the (Gårding 1977, Bruce & Gårding 1978, Öhman Gårding and Bruce scheme can be elaborated to 1967).

Appendix 1 THE NOMINATION COMMITTEE’S PROPOSALS TO THE SKISTAR 2019 AGM The nomination committee of SkiStar AB prior to the 2019 AGM consists of Anders Sundström, appointed by Mats and Fredrik Paulsson including family and company, Magnus Swärdh, appointed by Erik Paulsson including family and company, Åsa Nisell, appointed by Swedbank Robur Fonder, and Jan Särlvik, appointed by Nordea Funds. The nomination committee has appointed Anders Sundström chairman of the committee. The numbering below refers to the relevant numbers in the agenda for the 2019 AGM, as proposed in the notice to attend the AGM. 2. Election of Chairman of the meeting The nomination committee proposes the AGM to elect the chairman of the board of directors, Eivor Andersson, chairman of the AGM. 12. Resolution on extra fee to the chairman of the board of directors The nomination committee proposes that the chairman of the board of directors, Eivor Andersson, whom was appointed during the financial year 2018/19, shall receive an extra fee of SEK 600,000, i.e. in addition to the fee resolved upon by the 2018 AGM. As a result of among other things changes in both the composition of the board and the board’s work processes during the past year, the chairman of the board of directors has worked far more than was anticipated at the time of the AGM 2018. The proposed extra fee, which the nomination committee considers to be market-based, is intended to compensate the chairman for this extra work. 13. Resolution regarding the number of members and deputy members of the board of directors to be elected by the AGM The nomination committee proposes that the number of members of the board of directors shall be seven, without deputies, for the period until the end of the next annual general meeting.
