Botanical Name: Molucella Laevis Common Name: Molucca Balm/ Bells of Ireland FAMILY NAME: Lamiaceae Species and cultivars of special interest: The species is Laevis and the genus Moluccella. A smaller breed of moluccella laevis is the Pixie Bell, which typically grows to around 30cm long. Origin: Turkey, Syria & Calyces (Eastern Mediterranean Availability: Summer & Autumn Foliage Characteristics: The rounded leaves are pale green and the stems are hollow but very strong. Floral Characteristics: Flower spikes are made up of tightly-packed pale to olive-green cups or inverted bells with thin white veins running through them. Open flowers often show distinctive flecks of white pollen Special features and characteristics of special interest: The leaves emit a strong odour when crushed. Reportedly may aggravate asthmatic symptoms. The stems are phototropic and will bend towards the light. Maintenance, Cultural requirements and Post Harvest Treatments: - Keep bells of Ireland consistently moist. - Molucca Balm are top heavy, and they may topple over after a heavy rain or in areas exposed to wind. Stake the blooming stalks, grow the compact variety, or grow them in a sheltered area to keep the spires upright. - They don’t re bloom, so you can remove plants past their prime without guilt. However, you may want to leave them in place long enough for the seeds to mature and scatter, as these annuals are self-sowing. Pest and Diseases: No serious insect or disease problems. Use In Floristry: Typical vase life for this plant is 8 -10 days. The long green stems are excellent when used to create line, space and form and will tone well with flowers of any colour. Can be used in all types of arrangements. Customer Advice: Keep cool at all times. Strip leaves from the lower half of each stem and wash stem ends thoroughly. Recut at least 2 cm off each stem and place in water immediately. Always use a preservative as this will help buds to open and maintain open flowers. Replace vase water with fresh preservative every day.
