WEDNESDAY – JULY 3 – TRI-STATE HIKE – 13H/S This 13 1/2 mile version of the tri-state hike contains both a circuit hike and an out-and-back hike. Be sure to bring a camera for the beautiful overlooks in VA, WV, and MD. This hike has numerous sections of rocky trail and includes about 2,500 feet of climbing. An out-and-back hike of 8 mi going north from to White Rock overlook via Bear Spring Cabin. Total elevation gain is 950’ with the longest climb of 450’ over 1.5 mi. Pace averages 2.5 mph. If your dog enjoys long walks around the neighborhood, then he/she will surely enjoy this walk in the cool, shady woods. No dog? Then come without one and still enjoy the hike with us. – 2 – WEDNESDAY – JULY 17 – DICKINSON TO SAVAGE PARK – 8E 8 mile easy walk on mostly paved trails in Columbia. Wear sneakers instead of hiking boots. Total ascent is about 1,500 feet; some terrain is extremely rocky; there are no stream crossings to speak of; and the bulk of the hike is on the Appalachian Trail. Hike on Pond Run Trail crossing stream a total of 9 times to overlook at Half Moon Lookout, and White Rocks. Specatular views of Trout Run Valley between Mill Mountain and Long Mountain. The hike has multiple stream crossings, about 1,000 feet of elevation gain, and a few rocky sections of trail. Our pace while hiking will be 2.5 - 3 mph, and lunch will be by the water. Day 1: Hike 6.5 miles from Wolfsville Rd. to Annapolis Rocks and camp for the night. Day 2: Hike 6 miles to the Washington Monument. Requires car shuttle. After crossing Loch Raven Reservoir bear left on Jarrettsville Pile. 11.7 m north of I- 695 turn right onto Hess RD. Go 1.1 m & turn right onto Park Rd. Go .3 miles & turn left onto Moores Rd. First we ascend 500’ on the AT reaching a plateau. Departing from the AT, we follow a gradually descending trail to Hossack Run and the Dark Hollows. A nice gentle climb of 500’ along a stream until we return to the AT and the way back. Total ascent will be about 1500 feet and pace will be moderate (that is, our average speed while moving will be 2.5 - 3 mph).
