We will hike at a pace of about 2.5 mph, much of the time along the , and encounter a couple of steep but relatively short climbs. We will pause for a short snack break on the way, and should return to the starting point around noon. LEAVE: 9:30 AM from the trail head at the end of St. Johnsbury Road in Oella. From I-695, take Exit 13 and follow Frederick Road (Route 144) west for about 4 miles. Before crossing the River, turn right on Westchester Ave (before the Trolley Stop). Go 1.1 miles and at the Oella Ave intersection, make a slight jog to the left as you cross and continue on Westchester. In .7 miles, turn left on St. Johnsbury Road. We will have a short carpool to the trail head. WEDNESDAY – NOVEMBER 4 – SUGARLOAF MOUNTAIN (ONE) – 12H This 12 mile hike in Montgomery County starts from Sugarloaf’s upper west parking lot. Many sections of trail are very rocky, total ascent is 2,000+ feet , and our pace while hiking will be 2.5 - 3 mph. Lunch will be at the White Rocks Overlook. SATURDAY-SUNDAY – NOVEMBER 7-8 – SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK BACKPACK–15S This circuit backpack starts at the Old Rag parking lot and climbs 2400 ft. to the AT, then goes north on the AT to Byrd’s Nest #3 hut for a strenuous 8 mile first day. We’ll camp in or near the hut. Day two will include a side trip to Mary’s Rock for a spectacular view, followed by the descent back to the start. SATURDAY – NOVEMBER 7 – – 8M This is an out and back hike for hikers who like a continuous fast pace for the duration of the hike. Enjoy the beautiful reservoir scenery while getting in a good hiking workout. Some hills and one very steep climb. We will stop for a 10 minute snack. This hike should take about 2 1/2 hours. – 2 – WEDNESDAY – NOVEMBER 11 – –WEST IN HOWARD CO – 7E This 10 am hike has some hills but no stream crossings. 6105 Rockburn Branch Park Road. From I-95exit 43B, take MD-100 for 1.3m, Take exit 4 & merge onto MD-103 W Meadowridge Rd for 0.3m. Turn R on Montgomery Rd for 0.2m. Turn L & stay on Montgomery Rd for 0.6m. WEDNESDAY – NOVEMBER 11 – PVSP / HENRYTON TO LIBERTY DAM – 12M Twelve-mile out-and-back hike. Lunch at top of Liberty Dam. CARPOOL COST: $1.00. SATURDAY – NOVEMBER 14 – – GUNPOWDER LOOP/HEMLOCK GORGE – 9.5 M/H Join us on a 3 loop hike at the top of the Reservoir on the . We will hike along both sides of the river, first on the west side of Gunpowder Road to River Valley Ranch. After lunch we will go into a cave on the north side, flashlight recommended (biggest cave in Baltimore County – pictures on Google Earth) and go to the Betty’s Run waterfall. Then we will hike another loop on the east side of Gunpowder Road to Hemlock Gorge, an unusual river gorge that makes you feel like you are in New England. Hike through two of the deepest and steepest ravines in Shenandoah National Park with views of waterfalls, cascades and high cliffs. Steep climb up the White Oak Canyon trail; and steep climb to the top of Hawksbill Summit, the highest point in SNP. WEDNESDAY – NOVEMBER 18 – PVSP AVALON AREA – 5M MW No big stream crossings, but first half will be uphill. Lunch at CascadeFalls; then all flat or downhill. LEAVE: 10:00 A.M. from Avalon picnic and playground area. Directions: Take exit 11 off Baltimore beltway (695) to I-95 south, then onto I-195 towards BWI. Take exit 3 onto U.S.1 toward Washington. WEDNESDAY – NOVEMBER 18 – BALTIMORE’S TRAIL – 7M A 7-mile out-and-back hike, mostly along this nearly-level hiker-biker trail. WEDNESDAY – NOVEMBER 18 – SUNSET ROCKS – 10H A circuit hike through Pennsylvania’s Michaux State Forest for 10 miles and an accumulated 1600 feet of elevation gain. Hike through Tom’s Run Valley along the Appalachian Trail; see a historic 19th century iron furnace, the AT’s geographic center point (1090 miles from Springer Mountain, GA and Mount Katahdin, MA) and Tom’s Run Shelter. After lunch ascend Little Rocky Ridge for the highlight of the day – a boulder scramble called Sunset Rocks. At the northern terminus of the ridge and the end of the scramble, gaze out in wonderment from a nice scenic overlook. Leaving the overlook, return to the AT and the journey home. An optional visit to the AT Museum is possible if the museum is open. Also, an optional dinner stop may be included. – 3 – FRIDAY-SUNDAY – NOVEMBER 20-22 – NORTH FORK MT. BACKPACK – 24.7 H This ridge walk in the Monongahela National Forest, WV is loaded with jaw dropping vistas. A car shuttle will be required as well as a water cache at the midpoint. Elevation gain is 2,650 ft. and the pace will average 2mph. LEAVE: 7:00am, Rt. 32 Park and Ride, just north of I-70 exit 80. SUNDAY – NOVEMBER 22 – STATE PARK: DANIELS DAM AREA – 7M Highlights on this 7 mile hike in Howard County include some nice river overlooks, the “Indian Cave,” and a one mile walk along the river. The hike includes a short section of very rocky terrain, has a total ascent of about 800 feet, and has no stream crossings to speak of. Our pace while hiking will be 2.5 - 3 mph. WEDNESDAY – NOVEMBER 25 – APPALACHIAN TRAIL ACROSS MD SERIES – 10H One of a series of 9 hikes on the Appalachian Trail across Maryland. An out and back hike of a total of 10.5 miles going south from Alternate US-40 to White Rock Trail and Bear Spring Cabin. Total elevation gain is 2,000’ with the longest climb of 800’ over 1.6 miles. SATURDAY – NOVEMBER 28 – PRETTYBOY RESERVOIR – GEORGES CREEK TO SHAMBERGER’S PENNISULA – 10M Join us on this hike that will begin on the west side of Georges Creek at the Prettyboy Watershed. We will follow the Prettyboy Trail & hike up to Shamberger’s Peninsula. The Shamberger Trail is an old “horse & buggy” road. Two side trails halfway down to different waterviews. Lunch at the end of the peninsula with 3 different waterviews of the 2 largest islands in the watershed. An out & back hike that follows a different route when we come back to Georges Creek. The high point literally and figuratively is the climb up to Rocky Ridge, which we will have the opportunity to do in both directions. The hike has a total elevation gain of about 1800 feet, providing the opportunity to burn at least some of those Thanksgiving calories.
