SATURDAY - NOVEMBER 2 - MASON-DIXON TRAIL: KNIFE EDGE HIKE - 10.0 H / S ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED Susquehanna folk call this section of the M-D Trail “Knife Edge,” apparently because several sections follow a narrow ridge, 10-20’ wide, with steep shoulders falling down on either side. These sections are littered with angular granite rocks, which protrude from the trail like an exposed earthly spine. The main trail starts at a woodsy Boyd Rd. parking area off PA 425 (Furnace Rd.), drops down to Wilson Run (2 crossings), into a deep gorge, then climbs steeply to the ridge. At three miles the trail drops sharply to Cuff’s Run, then climbs again to the ridge for a view of Turkey Hill wind turbines across the river. At 4.6 miles the trail descends to Greenbranch Rd. (gravel), which parallels the river for .4 mile, leaves the road and crosses Mahala Run on a culvert berm, and climbs briefly to a mossy knob for lunch. Here is a view of the Susquehanna River, ~ 1.5 miles wide, looking like a bay; Washington Boro is on the east and Wrightsville on the west banks. Then we head back. For the distance, this trail offers a workout! Pace: moderate, 2.5 mph.
