We will hike trails in the woods surrounding Lake Williams in the York, PA watershed, with moderate hills and pleasant views of the lake. We will stop for a brief visit to the Nature Center and have lunch overlooking the lake. We will hike at a moderate pace of about 2.5 mph. LEAVE: 8:30 a.m. from the Timonium Park & Ride, north lot. SATURDAY - NOVEMBER 2 - MASON-DIXON TRAIL: KNIFE EDGE HIKE - 10.0 H / S ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED

Susquehanna folk call this section of the M-D Trail “Knife Edge,” apparently because several sections follow a narrow ridge, 10-20’ wide, with steep shoulders falling down on either side. These sections are littered with angular granite rocks, which protrude from the trail like an exposed earthly spine. The main trail starts at a woodsy Boyd Rd. parking area off PA 425 (Furnace Rd.), drops down to Wilson Run (2 crossings), into a deep gorge, then climbs steeply to the ridge. At three miles the trail drops sharply to Cuff’s Run, then climbs again to the ridge for a view of Turkey Hill wind turbines across the river. At 4.6 miles the trail descends to Greenbranch Rd. (gravel), which parallels the river for .4 mile, leaves the road and crosses Mahala Run on a culvert berm, and climbs briefly to a mossy knob for lunch. Here is a view of the , ~ 1.5 miles wide, looking like a bay; Washington Boro is on the east and Wrightsville on the west banks. Then we head back. For the distance, this trail offers a workout! This is an out and back along the first section of the HAM. About 45 minutes into the hike there is significant rocky climb, and there is an incline on the way back from Ravens Rock. We will hike at 2.5 miles per hour. We will detour to view HIgh Rock, and maybe stop at the Raven Rock shelter. We will have lunch at Raven Rock. WEDNESDAY - NOVEMBER 6 - TRACEY STORE / PRETTYBOY&CCC TRAILS - 14H ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED

This is a 3 loop hike with a new combination of trails starting at a different trailhead on Tracey’s Store Road. We will hike fireroads, the Prettyboy Trail, and the CCC trails, and have lots of water views. Lunch will have a great view of Goose Island. Some stream crossings. SATURDAY - NOVEMBER 9 - PRETTYBOY TRAIL - SHAMBERGER’S PENNISULA TO PRETTYBOY DAM -12H ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED

Join us as we hike the entire Prettyboy Trail from Shamberger’s Pennisula at Beckleysville Road all the way to the Prettyboy Dam. This is an 11 mile narrow foot trail with gorgeous water views the entire hike and a 1 mile diversion for lunch with a great view of Goose Island. Last part of hike is tough, a rocky / bolder & slope side trail - hiking poles recommended. Many stream crossings. Pace of 2.5 mph . Plan to hike all day. This demanding 14 mile hike takes us to WV, MD, and VA and includes both a circuit hike and an out- and-back hike. There are rocks galore and about 3,000 feet of climbing on this hike (including one climb of 1,000+ feet). The hike offers much eye candy, including spectacular overlooks and panoramic views of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers. Our pace while hiking will average 2.5 - 3 mph. Join us on this 7 1 / 2 mile State Park hike in Howard County. The hike includes some stretches of rocky terrain, a couple of minor stream crossings, 900+ feet of climbing, and a gentle river walk of about a mile shortly before we return to our cars. Our pace while hiking will average 2.5 - 3.0 mph. There will be a 10 minute snack break but no lunch. Hike at a causal pace with some hills and two minor stream crossings. A loop hike with two short out & back side trails. LEAVE: 10:00 AM. DIRECTIONS: From I-695 take exit 19 for I-795 / Northwest Expy toward Reisterstown / Owings Mills. Continue on I-795 for 6.3 mi. Take exit 7B for Franklin Blvd W. An approximately 4.5-mile hike on what I call “The Tower Trail” at the Prettyboy Reservoir. We will have two views of the reservoir from just above the dam, no stream crossings; but there will a few moderate hills and some rocky sections. MEET: 10.00 am. DIRECTIONS: Take Exit 31 off of I-83 North; turn left onto Middletown road, go .5 miles and turn left onto Molesworth road, go .6 miles and turn right onto Armacost road, at .6 miles turn right onto Spooks Hill road. WEDNESDAY - NOVEMBER 13 - SUGARLOAF MOUNTAIN - 12H ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED

This 12 mile hike in Montgomery County starts from Sugarloaf's lower parking lot. Many sections of trail are very rocky, total ascent is 2,000+ feet , and our pace while hiking will be 2.5 - 3 mph. Lunch will be at the White Rocks Overlook. LEAVE: 8:30 AM from Howard County Fairgrounds parking area. (From Exit 80 on I-70, take MD-32 south for about .25 mile; then go west (right) on MD-144 for .5 mile; then turn right at Fairgrounds Road and see parking on your left.). SATURDAY - NOVEMBER 16 - / ATKINS ARBORETUM - 11M

Meet at 9:00 AM at 13450 Cherry Ln, Ridgely in Caroline County. Enter park and make a left at the Picnic Area & Pavilion. Drive back .2mi to the second parking area on the right. We will start hiking the Lake Trail .75mi to Crouse Mill Rd before getting on the Tuckahoe Trail. After a .6mi we will make a left and hike through some of the Arboretum before connecting to the Creekside Walk and the Creekside Cliff Trails. There are two stream crossings several feet wide before and after the Creekside Cliff Trail. This 1mi. trail gets hilly and has some nice creek views before ending at the cemetery. After that we use a trial heading towards the Park Ranger Station and then to the Arboretum Spur Trail before getting back on the Tuckahoe Valley Trail. We will then use the Pee Wee Trail as we head towards the Equestrian Center on Crouse Mill Rd. After a .8mi road walk, we will get back on the Lake Trail and head back to the parking lot. The Creekside Cliff 1mi and the Pee Wee Trail 2 mi have the best views. Poles are needed for the creek crossings and there are some hills and muddy spots. Also bring water, snacks and tick repellent. SATURDAY- NOVEMBER 16 - LOCH RAVEN RESERVOIR - 8H ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

This is a fun hike that has a little of everything. This is a lollipop-shaped hike . We will head straight north, then do a large loop right up to the Warren Road Bridge, wind back around, then head straight south back to the cars. Rolling hills, some rocky trails, one or two steep, but short, climbs, beautiful water views, and even some minor "fun" rock scrambling are all included in this hike. Note: This hike is for experienced hikers who like a fast pace for the duration of the hike. Trailhead is across the street from 10514 Pot Spring Rd. 21030. Park on the street. SUNDAY - NOVEMBER 17 - LOCH RAVEN RESERVOIR - 5M WOOF! ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED

Both 2 and 4-legged hikers will enjoy this moderate hike on the scenic Loch Raven trails. We will take you with or without a dog, but dogs are encouraged. They have a ball! See about all there is to see at . Make the most of every trail, use some less used footpaths, and hike up and down most hills. Some mud and several stream crossings. Steady pace of 2.0 mph. SUNDAY - NOVEMBER 17 - SOLDIERS DELIGHT - 7M ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED

This hike will cover all of the blazed trails at Soldiers Delight Natural Environmental Area and will include a mixture of trails through serpentine barrens, fields, and wooded areas. There are a few easy stream crossings and no significant hills (total elevation < 700 feet). We will have a brief lunch / snack break. Our pace will be moderate (close to 3 mph moving average). WEDNESDAY - NOVEMBER 20 - OELLA - 4 / 5M

Walk in historic Oella, as well as along the and the wooded hills that surround it. The hike follows the roadway within the historic mill town, then shifts to the mill race paralleling the Patapsco River before looping back along the Trolley Trail to the riverfront. Some elevation change and parts of the millrace are narrow and uneven. WEDNESDAY - NOVEMBER 20-BACON RIDGE NATURAL AREA-NEW NORTHERN SECTION-7M

The terrain is similar to the southern section of Bacon Ridge which we have hiked in the past. Some steepish hills, some rolling hills and mature woods. Located in Anne Arundel Cnty about a15-20 minute drive from the I-695 exit to I-97s. Take I-97 south and take Exit 5. At the traffic light at the end of the exit, turn left onto MD 178, Generals’ Highway. After 0.7 miles, turn left on Waterbury Rd. (There is a log cabin at this corner with a reddish roof.) Proceed on Waterbury Rd. 0.4 miles to cross over I-97 and immediately turn left onto Bacon Ridge Rd. Proceed 1.3 miles on Bacon Ridge Rd. to parking on the right. Hike from Catoctin Furnace over Bob’s Hill to Cat Rock and back. Join us on this 10 mile out-and-back hike in Frederick County. The hike includes some extremely rocky sections of trail and a couple of challenging climbs with a total 2,000 feet of ascent. Our pace while hiking will average 2.5 - 2.8 MPH. As part of our 20-year “facelift” of the James Fry shelter on the A.T. near Gardners, PA, we will be adding a new coat of shingles on the shelter and privy. If you can use a hammer or carry materials, you can be helpful. (The shelter is about 2 / 3 mile from the nearest road.) Bring lunch and water, a hammer if you have one, and work gloves. SATURDAY - NOVEMBER 23 - PVSP: GRANITE QUARRY (FAST PACE) - 8H (NEW HIKE) ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED

This 8 1 / 2 mile Baltimore County hike employs the Granite Quarry area of the Patapsco Valley State Park. The hike is for experienced hikers who can maintain a fast pace for the duration of the hike and who are looking for a challenging mid-morning workout. Our pace while hiking will average 3.0 - 3.3 mph (which is about 20% faster than the normal pace for my hikes). The hike has no stream crossings to speak of, some sections of rocky terrain, some sections of trail that may be muddy, a variety of landscapes and river views, and a modest 600+ feet of climbing. SATURDAY - NOVEMBER 23 - PVSP: GRANITE QUARRY (AFTERNOON HIKE) - 6E (NEW HIKE) ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED

This 5 3 / 4-mile Baltimore County hike employs the Granite Quarry area of the Patapsco Valley State Park. The hike is less demanding than the typical weekend hike since the distance is modest, the climbing is less than 400 feet total, and the pace averages 2.25 - 2.75 mph. The hike has no stream crossings to speak of, some sections of rocky terrain, some sections of trail that may be muddy, and a variety of landscapes and river views. SUNDAY - NOVEMBER 24 - PATAPSCO VALLEY STATE PARK: PICKALL HIKE - 8M

This 7-8-mile figure-eight hike in Baltimore County uses a combination of marked and unmarked trails to travel from Oella to the Pickall area and then return by different paths. Total ascent will be 800+ feet, our pace while hiking will be 2.5 - 3 mph, and lunch will be near the Pickall pavilions. The hike has a few stream crossings, a number of rocky sections of trail, a few steep but relatively short climbs, and numerous pleasant views of the Patapsco River. WEDNESDAY-NOVEMBER 27 - HILTON AREA PVSP 5+

1101 Hilton Ave, Catonsville, MD. Directions: Take exit for Rte 166 off I95, Make a right turn on S. Rolling Road. Turn left on Hilton Ave continue to the park. Rest rooms are usually open. We start hike at 10 am. Some rocky sections and a crossing at Saw Mill Creek. Hike is a mild pace. Bring a snack for 15 minute break along the creek. WEDNESDAY - NOVEMBER 27--6E / M

We’ll hike on woodland paths and converted rail trails, look for nature inspired artwork installed in the park, and if we are lucky, we might see the turtles, waterfowl and eagles that make their homes in this park on the outskirts of the city. MEET 10 AM at the parking lot near the dam. DIRECTIONS: From Balto. Beltway (I-695), if westbound, exit 23B towards I-83 South and Falls Road, but get in far right lane onto exit ramp towards Falls Road. If eastbound on Balto. Beltway, exit 23B onto Falls Road. Either way, you exit onto northern end of JFX (I-83). Immediately get over from far right lane into far left lane to take left turn at first traffic light onto Falls Road. Go 3 miles, crossing a bridge over , then turn left immediately before reaching the traffic light at Lake Ave. (look for Light Rail sign) . Then make an immediate right at the Lake Roland Park sign. WEDNESDAY - NOVEMBER 27 - CATOCTIN TRAIL NORTH- 12H ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED

Hike an 11.3 mile balloon circuit from the north end on the Catoctin Trail to the top of Cunningham Falls, climbing four hills 200’ or more vertical with moderate slopes totaling 1995 vertical feet between 1242’ and 1776’ elevation. Length: 15 miles; Elevation gain: approximately 2,500 ft. Hike off yesterday’s Thanksgiving dinner and stay away from the mall on this Black Friday hike. We’ll hike from the Manor Area of Cunningham Falls to Bobs Hill and Cat Rock, then continue to Catoctin Park to Chimney Rock and Wolf Rock; Returning to the Manor Area on the Old Misery Trail. Hike on the West side of the Upper Beckleysville Road Bridge up to Gunpowder Road and North. This hike will be on Fire Roads with a pace of 2.5 mph. This hike has great water views in the winter with no leaves on the trees. We will hike down two narrow trails to points on the reservoir and to a historic graveyard with a decorated soldier of the Revolutionary War. Bring water & a lunch. Join us on this 8 mile Howard County hike that employs both the and the Patapsco Valley State Park. The hike is for experienced hikers who can maintain a fast pace for the duration of the hike and who are looking for a challenging mid-morning workout. Our pace while hiking will average 3.0 - 3.3 mph (which is about 20% faster than the normal pace for my hikes). The hike has three stream crossings, a couple of sections of rugged trail, 800+ feet of climbing, and a 10 minute snack break. DIRECTIONS TO TRAILHEAD: Drive to 6145 Montgomery Road (Elkridge, 21075), at which point you’ll turn into the road shared by Rockburn Elementary School and Rockburn Branch Park; then proceed .6 mile to the parking area adjacent to the baseball diamond on the right hand side of the road. Join us on this 5 mile Howard County hike that employs both the Rockburn Branch Park and the Patapsco Valley State Park. The hike is less demanding than the typical weekend hike since the distance is modest, the climbing is less than 400 feet total, and the pace averages 2.25 - 2.75 mph. The hike has two stream crossings, not much by way of rugged trail, and offers a 10 minute snack break around the three mile mark. This is a fun hike that has a little of everything. This is a lollipop-shaped hike . We will head straight north, then do a large loop right up to the Warren Road Bridge, wind back around, then head straight south back to the cars. Rolling hills, some rocky trails, one or two steep, but short, climbs, beautiful water views, and even some minor "fun" rock scrambling are all included in this hike. This hike is a mixture of fire roads and foot paths that includes trails along the shoreline south of Liberty Road and the south side of Liberty Dam, including quarry areas used as a fill source during the building of the dam, and has many water views. There are a few steep but short hills amounting to a little more than 1000 feet of total elevation gain. We will have lunch near the water’s edge. Our pace will be moderate (close to 3 mph moving average). These are two out and back hikes from the Bunker Hill Parking lot. You can do one or both! 1st loop: an out and back down the Gunpowder South trail up the Highlands trail and back along Gunpowder South, 6 miles and 860 ft of elevation gain. You will see beautiful views of the and have some rock scrambling along the river. We have lunch then the 2nd loop: Hike out to the Panther Branch trail and take Gunpowder South trail back: 6.5 miles, approximately 1050 ft. elevation gain. Join us on this 8 mile Howard County hike located near the Daniels Dam Area of the Patapsco Valley State Park. The hike is for experienced hikers who can maintain a fast pace for the duration of the hike and who are looking for a mid-morning workout. Our pace while hiking will average 3.0 - 3.3 mph (which is about 20% faster than the normal pace for my hikes). This modified out-and-back hike has a few minor stream crossings, a couple of striking views of the Patapsco River, several sections of rocky terrain, some tilted trails, and a total ascent of about 1,200 feet. Join us on this 5 3 / 4-mile Patapsco Valley State Park hike in Howard County. The hike is less demanding than the typical weekend hike since the distance is modest, the climbing is less than 100 feet per mile, and the pace averages 2.25 - 2.75 mph. The hike has a couple of minor stream crossings, some sections of rocky terrain, and a variety of landscapes. In addition, there are numerous exposures to the Patapsco River, including three relaxing walks along its banks. Bring a snack for the10 minute break. WEDNESDAY - JANUARY 15 - PRETTYBOY RESERVOIR HIKE FROM GEORGE’S CREEK - 4M

Meet at 10 AM in a parking area on the west side of a bridge on George’s Creek Rd. in northern Baltimore County. Take I-83 north from the Baltimore Beltway. Take exit 27 for Mt. Carmel Rd. (Rt. 137) and turn left on the ramp to head west. Pass Prettyboy Dam Rd. on Mt. Carmel Rd. and turn right on Foreston Road with the sign for Friendly Farms restaurant. Continue on the road winding around and turn left onto George’s Creek Rd. Cross the bridge over George’s Creek and park in the parking area on the right. We will hike for about 4 miles in a loop on the Prettyboy Trail and forest paths along George’s Creek and Prettyboy Reservoir. Hike along the Jones Falls above the lake, through the woods and serpentine barrens, and visit the cave and the old rugby field. Moderate pace but rocky in spots and could be icy or muddy in spots. This Carroll county hike starts with a 4 mile out and back section before beginning an 8 mile loop of the peninsula south of Liberty Rd between the two reservoir bridges. We will head straight north, then do a large loop right up to the Warren Road Bridge, wind back around, then head straight south back to the cars. Rolling hills, some rocky trails, one or two steep, but short, climbs, beautiful water views, and even some minor "fun" rock scrambling are all included in this hike. A figure eight hike through Pennsylvania’s Michaux State Forest for 14 / 15 miles and an accumulated 2100 feet of elevation gain. Start at Pine Grove Furnace State Park and hike the southern loop through Tom’s Run Valley along the Appalachian Trail; passes an historic 19 th century iron furnace, the AT’s geographic center point (1090 miles from Springer Mountain, GA and Mount Katahdin, ME), Tom’s Run Shelter, ascends Little Rocky Ridge, and traverses the half mile boulder scramble called Sunset Rocks. The northern loop begins in an old railroad bed, follows the shoreline of Laurel Lake, ascends to the Pole Steeple overlook, returns to the Appalachian Trail and back to Pine Grove Furnace State Park. Join us on this 6 mile Patapsco Valley State Park hike in Howard County. The hike is unusual in that takes us under both the Route 40 bridge and the I-70 bridge, and gives us great views of those structures both before and after we pass under them. There also will be great views of the Patapsco River as we stride alongside it and then hike high above it. The hike has a few minor stream crossings, some rocky sections, and a total ascent of about 1,000 feet. Our pace while hiking will average 2.5 - 3.0 mph. There will be a 10 minute snack break. One of a series of 9 hikes on the Appalachian Trail across Maryland. An out and back of a total of 10.4 miles going north from Wolfsville Road (MD-17) to Raven Rock Shelter. Total elevation gain is 2,400’ with the longest climb of 600’ over 0.8 mile. Paces averages 2.5 MPH. A hike in a remote area on the east side of Prettboy Reservoir. We will follow a loop trail down to Indian House Rock, a point of rocks extending into the lake which was actually the top of a cave where Native Americans lived. Then we’ll hike on an old horse & buggy road with interesting remains of an under road stonewall surrounding a spring, and hike more trails passing an old CCC (Civil Conservation Corp) Camp and to a great point of rocks for lunch with a great view of the end of the reservoir & dam. SUNDAY - FEBRUARY 23 - LIBERTY RESERVOIR: COOT PENINSULA TRAIL - 11M ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED

This hike is a mixture of fire roads and foot paths along a section of Baltimore’s largest reservoir in Carroll County with many water views. There are a few steep but short hills amounting to about 1700 feet of total elevation gain and only one easy stream crossing. Lunch will be at the water’s edge on Coot Peninsula. Our pace will be moderate (close to 3 mph moving average). LEAVE: 9:15 A.M. from the Park- N-Ride at 6400 Sykesville Rd, Sykesville, MD 21784 on the east side of Sykesville Road (MD-32) about 0.5 miles south of Liberty Road (MD-26). Join us on this 8 mile Patapsco Valley State Park hike in Howard County. The hike is for experienced hikers who can maintain a fast pace for the duration of the hike and who are looking for a challenging mid-morning workout. This hike contains a number of steep 100+ foot climbs, which makes it more taxing that most of my FAST PACE hikes. Our pace while hiking will average 3.0 - 3.3 mph (which is about 20% faster than the normal pace for my hikes). The hike has a number of small stream crossings, relatively little rocky terrain, and about 1,400 feet of climbing. There will be a 10 minute snack break. Join us on this 5 1 / 2 mile Patapsco Valley State Park hike in Howard County. The hike is less demanding than the typical weekend hike since the distance is modest, the climbing is less than 150 feet per mile, and the pace averages 2.25 - 2.75 mph. The hike has five stream crossings, some sections of rocky terrain, a variety of landscapes, and numerous views of the Patapsco River and some of its tributaries (including, of course, the Davis Branch). This is an out and back hike with some hills but no stream crossings. Hike will be at a moderate pace of about 2.5 mph on mostly fire roads and some foot paths. Pretty water views and a visit to the ruins of a 19 th century water mill. Leave: 10:00 AM from 35 South Lake Way, Reisterstown, MD 21136. From 695 take exit 18 west, Liberty Road. Go 4.75 miles to a right on Deer Park Road. Go 5.4 miles to end of Deer Park Road (must turn left at stop sign after 3.2 miles to continue on Deer Park). At the end of Deer Park, turn left on South Lake Way (this will be the second entrance to South Lake Way). Go approximately .1 mile and park on the street. WEDNESDAY - FEBRUARY 26 - CHIMNEY ROCKS - 13H ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED

This is out-n-back hike along the Pennsylvania AT from the Old Forge Picnic Area north over Chimney Rocks to PA Route 233. We begin by climbing 1,100 feet over the first 3 miles (7% grade) to the top of Chimney Rocks, passing Tumbling Run Shelter along the way. At the summit we will proceed across undulating terrain ultimately descending 400 feet until we reach PA Route 233 for lunch, then return. The hike has no significant unbridged water crossings but does have 2,200 feet of total climbing. An optional dinner stop may be included. This loop hike will begin in , PA and hike along the Appalachian Trail, Locust Gap Trail, and Wigwam Trail in Michaux State Forest. The afternoon hike will pass the Quarry Gap Shelter. There are several steep climbs and several moderate stream crossings, rock scrambles, or rocky sections. The estimated total ascent is 1800 feet.
