Introduction In this annual report on the ear 6, the Mercator European Research Centre on Multilingualism and Language Learning is looking ack on its activities. rom its origin in 87, hen Mercator as initiated the European Commission the ocus of Mercator as to e ound in documentation and inormation of Regional and Minority Languages RML in the European Union oadas, the Mercator European Research Centre is more oriented towards research with a clear focus on multilingualism and language learning specially linked to Regional and Minority Languages in Europe and eond Mercator has an open eye or other deelopments in the ield o multilingualism, such as sign languages and immigrant languages. he interest in the diversity of languages in Europe is epressed irst of all in Mercator’s assessment o indigenous, regional and minority languages. econd in language teaching in ormal and informal settings and third in a groing need or reliale data and comparative research Mercator serves as a platform in Europe it rings people together to share knoledge echange experiences and good practices and it connects scientists with practitioners, politicians and policy makers. All functions comined are o major importance or the Mercator European Research Centre to ulfil its mission received the local authorities ith lair: ring Frysln to Europe and Europe to ryslân. The activities of the Mercator Research Centre hae the olloing four components: 1.
