In the case of Galician, it is particularly interesting to study varieties of Galician and Portuguese wHicH sHare a common origin but are separated by a long-standing political border. Work to date Has concluded tHat some of tHese intonation patterns present a prosodic continuum, but has also identified a large part of the Galician linguistic area where a widespread pattern is found that is unrelated to Portuguese. An approacH to the study of dialectology and linguistic cHange will be proposed which supplements traditional geoprosodic studies with sociolinguistic concepts such as contact between languages and language varieties. THis article will address Questions concerning interaction between geoprosodic variation and contact among languages and language varieties for tHe purpose of detecting ongoing prosodic change and describing prosodic convergence processes that affect coexisting language varieties in Galicia. It covers an area of 29,575 square kilometres. Its orography is irregular and the coast is jagged forming the so-called “rías”. The political-administrative capital is Santiago de Compostela. The current administrative division, established in the 19th century, divides the territory into four provinces: A Coruña, Lugo, Ourense and Pontevedra. Galicia has 2, 812,962 inhabitants. By province, the population is distributed as follows: A Coruña 1,131,404; Lugo 387,038; Ourense 362,832 and Pontevedra 931,688. Galician population is distributed irregularly throughout the territory. It’s density is 94.4 inhabitants/km2. Galician population is characterized by a high level of dispersion, with small population centres.

In languages whose standard form was established and implemented well after the beginning of the last century, however, such as Galician, it is still possible to perform studies from other perspectives. Unlike other languages, standard Galician was not based on a single dialect but aspired instead to be supradialectal in nature. In the present study, the tools and methods of quantitative dialectology are brought to bear in the task of establishing the extent to which dialect varieties of Galician resemble or differ from the standard variety. Moreover, the results of the analysis underline the importance of the different dialects in the evaluation of the supradialectal aim, as established by the makers of the standard variety. Introduction The measurement of linguistics differences is an old topic of linguistic research that has been given new life in recent decades by the advance of data-intensive computing systems in linguistic research.     A BRIEF OUTLINE OF HISTORICAL SOCIOLINGUISTICS OF THE GALICIAN LANGUAGE XAVIER FRÍAS CONDE Universidad Complutense de Madrid 1. THE GALICIAN LANGUAGE AND ITS SPEAKERS1 Galician is a minority language spoken in the West of Spain belonging to the Romance languages family. It is spoken in Galicia and also in the neighbouring areas of the Spanish provinces of Asturias, León and Zamora. Far away from this area, there are three villages in Extremadura region in west Spain, next to the Portuguese border and just under the border with the province of Salamanca (this is the so-called Xálima region2). Therefore Galician is theoretically the language of about 3 million inhabitants, of which more than 95% live in Galicia. Important minorities of Galician immigrants live out of Galicia, so that Galician is still spoken in certain big cities such as Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Madrid (Spain). It is difficult to know exactly how many speakers Galician has. Despite the various interviews performed, it is almost impossible to work out the exact number of its speakers. According to the last Atlas of the ILG (1996), it is easy to see how the evolution in the use of the language has developed all over the last years. This has coincided with an increase in research and theory in the field of LPP. LPP is a relatively recent field of research: research into this field started in the 1950s and 1960s. In this period many Western-trained linguists became interested in issues concerning the (former) colonies. These countries often found themselves with multiple languages within their (new) borders. The subject of this thesis is Language Policy and Politics in Spain and Italy in the context of the European Union. The question will be asked “Have the linguistic policies of Spain and Italy regarding Regional and Minority Languages converged in the second half of the 20th century, and how do these changes fit into the linguistic framework of the European Union in that period?”. In this way, Europeanization will be researched in this particular field for these countries. A general expectation in the field of European Union policy studies is that policies of member states will converge and become more similar. One would expect the same to be true for the language policies regarding minority languages.

Morriña and Transnational Identities 1 Mónica Álvarez Estévez Trinity School, New York Abstract: Morriña, a keen sense of nostalgia and longing for one’s homeland, has long been closely aligned with a Galician way of being. Yet there are as many ways of experiencing this feeling or condition as there are—or have been—Galicians wandering the world. Although Galician philosophers and writers— Alfonso Castelao, Rosalía de Castro, Emilia Pardo Bazán, and José Camilo Cela among them—have already said much about morriña, its role in constructing transnational identities remains largely unexplored. Galician immigration to New York from 1945 to the present offers a unique opportunity to study this phenomenon. In the often anonymous, quotidian, and arduous trajectories of their lives—as they started small businesses, worked long hours, invested their prized savings, and raised their young families—these tens of thousands of Galicians linked their country of origin with their country of settlement. In the melting pot that is New York, the morriña experienced by Galician immigration in the second half of the twentieth century reshaped their way of understanding themselves in the world and played a pivotal role as these immigrants forged a new and unique identity as Galician-Americans. There are not a few of the regions of Spain that have also a particular language. Three of these Regions, Cataluña, Galicia and The Basque County have their own regional language: the Catalan Language, the Galician Language and the Basque Language. Does this language influence the culture of the region? Or these regions have a regional language because of their position near to the border? The end of the Cold War and the evolution of the modern states towards decentralization have favored the creation of new structures on ethnic grounds. Samuel Huntington’s viewpoint is that “in the new world order, the most important and dangerous conflicts will be the ones between people who belong to different cultural entities”(Huntington: The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order, 1997:26) But one may say that differences between regions, entities, nations etc. don’t need to turn into violent conflicts; they can be resolved by means of diplomatic negotiations or a better communication between the parts involved in each situation.
