Jacopo Gnisci Jacopo Gnisci CONTINUITY AND TRADITION: THE PROMINENT ROLE OF CYRILLIAN CHRISTOLOGY IN FIFTEENTH AND SIXTEENTH CENTURY ETHIOPIA The Ethiopian Tewahedo Church is one of the oldest in the world. Its clergy maintains that Christianity arrived in the country during the first century AD (Yesehaq 1997: 13), as a result of the conversion of the Ethiopian Eunuch, narrated in the Acts of the Apostles (8:26-39). For most scholars, however, the history of Christianity in the region begins with the conversion of the Aksumite ruler Ezana, approximately during the first half of the fourth century AD.1 For historical and geographical reasons, throughout most of its long history the Ethiopian Church has shared strong ties with Egypt and, in particular, with the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria. For instance, a conspicuous part of its literary corpus, both canonical and apocryphal, is drawn from Coptic sources (Cerulli 1961 67:70). Its liturgy and theology were also profoundly affected by the developments that took place in Alexandria (Mercer 1970).2 Furthermore, the writings of one of the most influential Alexandrian theologians, Cyril of Alexandria (c. 378-444), played a particularly significant role in shaping Ethiopian theology .3 The purpose of this paper is to highlight the enduring importance and influence of Cyril's thought on certain aspects of Ethiopian Christology from the early developments of Christianity in the country to the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Its aim, therefore, is not to offer a detailed examination of Cyril’s work, or more generally of Ethiopian Christology. From Purim to Pesach and Back
RABBI’S MESSAGE From Purim to Pesach and Back The Hebrew calendar gives us a double blessing in the months of Adar and Nissan, with the holidays of Purim and Passover coming back-to-back. These celebrations are very different from each other, and yet the progression of one to the other on the calendar can give interesting ideas to explore. Both deal with bitter enemies and the possibility of genocidal extinction. The Purim villain, Haman, manipulates the Persian king into decreeing legalized murder of the Jewish people. Haman’s plan fails and the Jews retaliate. The Passover villain, Pharaoh, also threatens extinction by murdering Jewish baby boys at birth. This plan also fails, and the Israelites are redeemed by G-D’s “mighty hand and outstretched arm” to escape into the wilderness and eventually the Promised Land. From the 15th of Adar to the 15th of Nissan, the score is: Jews 2, Evil 0. Yes, both Purim and Pesach fulfill the traditional theme about Jewish holidays: “They tried to kill us. We survived. Let’s eat.” The survival elements and food are certainly part of our contemporary celebrations for both holidays. The threats occur differently, and so do our observances. While Passover precedes Purim chronologically, Purim precedes Passover on the calendar. I’ve often considered the various ways these two springtime festivals differ as ways to look at the growth of our people. In the Book of Esther, the name of God is not mentioned. In the traditional Passover Haggadah, the name of Moses is not mentioned. We are taught that Moses’ name was left out of the Haggadah for fear of deifying Moses. -

Tanakh versus Old Testament What is the Tanakh? The Tanakh (also known as the Hebrew Bible) was originally written in Hebrew with a few passages in Aramaic. The Tanakh is divided into three sections – Torah (Five Books of Moshe), Nevi’im (Prophets), and Ketuvim (Writings). The Torah is made up of five books that were given to Moshe directly from God after the Exodus from Mitzrayim. The Torah was handed down through the successive generations from the time of Moshe. The Torah includes the creation of the earth and the first humans, the Great Flood and the covenant with the gentiles, the Hebrew enslavement and Exodus of the Hebrews from Mitzrayim, giving of the Torah, renewal of Covenant given to Avraham, establishment of the festivals, wandering through the desert, the Mishkan, Ark, and Priestly duties, and the death of Moshe. The Nevi’im covers the time period from the death of Moshe through the Babylonian exile and contains 19 books. The Nevi’im includes the time of the Hebrews entering Eretz Yisrael, the conquest of Yericho, the conquest of Eretz Yisrael and its division among the tribes, the judicial system, Era of Shaul and David, Shlomo’s wisdom and the construction of the First Beit HaMikdash, kings of Yisrael and Yehuda, prophecy, messianic prophecies, and the Babylonian exile. The Ketuvim covers the period after the return from the Babylonian exile and contains 11 books. The Ketuvim is made up of various writings that do not have an overall theme. This section of the Tanakh includes poems and songs, the stories of Iyov, Rut, and Ester, the writings and prophecies of Dani’el, and the history of the kings of Yisrael and Yehuda. -

Oegema Faculty of Religious Studies McGill University 3520 University Street Office hours: by appointment Tel. 398-4126 Fax 398-6665 Email: [email protected] Prerequisite: This course presupposes some basic knowledge typically but not exclusively acquired in any of the introductory courses in Hebrew Bible (The Religion of Ancient Israel; Literature of Ancient Israel 1 or 2; The Bible and Western Culture), New Testament (Jesus of Nazareth, New Testament Studies 1 or 2) or Rabbinic Judaism. Contents: The course is meant for undergraduates, who want to learn more about the history of Ancient Judaism, which roughly dates from 300 BCE to 200 CE. In this period, which is characterized by a growing Greek and Roman influence on the Jewish culture in Palestine and in the Diaspora, the canon of the Hebrew Bible came to a close, the Biblical books were translated into Greek, the Jewish people lost their national independence, and, most important, two new religions came into being: Early Christianity and Rabbinic Judaism. In the course, which is divided into three modules of each four weeks, we will learn more about the main historical events and the political parties (Hasmonaeans, Sadducees, Pharisees, Essenes, etc.), the religious and philosophical concepts of the period (Torah, Ethics, Freedom, Political Ideals, Messianic Kingdom, Afterlife, etc.), and the various Torah interpretations of the time. A basic knowledge of this period is therefore essential for a deeper understanding of the formation of the two new religions, Early Christianity and Rabbinic Judaism, and for a better understanding of the growing importance, history and Biblical interpretation have had for Ancient Judaism. -

The End of All Things Took Me Longer to Write Than Most of My Books Do, in Part Because I Had a Number of False Starts
AN ALTERNATE “THE LIFE OF THE MIND” Deleted and Alternate Scenes ■■ ■■ 039-61734_ch01_4P.indd 351 06/09/15 6:17 am Introduction The End of All Things took me longer to write than most of my books do, in part because I had a number of false starts. These false starts weren’t bad—in my opinion— and they were use- ful in helping me fi gure out what was best for the book; for ex- ample, determining which point- of- view characters I wanted to have, whether the story should be in fi rst or third person, and so on. But at the same time it’s annoying to write a bunch of stuff and then go Yeaaaaah, that’s not it. So it goes. Through vari ous false starts and diversions, I ended up writ- ing nearly 40,000 words— almost an entire short novel!—of material that I didn’t directly use. Some of it was re cast and repurposed in different directions, and a lot of it was simply left to the side. The thing is when I throw something out of a book, I don’t just delete it. I put it into an “excise fi le” and keep it just in case it’ll come in handy later. Like now: I’ve taken vari ous bits from the excise fi le and with them have crafted a fi rst chapter of an alternate version of The Life of the Mind, the fi rst novella of The End of All Things. This version (roughly) covers the same events, with (roughly) the same characters, but with a substantially different narrative di- rection. -

Handlist 164 LEEDS UNIVERSITY LIBRARY Provisional handlist of manuscripts in the Roth Collection Introduction Dr Cecil Roth (1899-1970), the Jewish historian, was born on 5 March 1899 in Dalston, London, the youngest of the four sons of Joseph and Etty Roth. Educated at the City of London School, he saw active service in France in 1918 and then read history at Merton College, Oxford, obtaining a first class degree in modern history in 1922, and a DPhil in 1924; his thesis was published in 1925 as The Last Florentine Republic. In 1928 he married Irene Rosalind Davis. They had no children. Roth soon turned to Jewish studies, his interest from childhood, when he had a traditional religious education and learned Hebrew from the Cairo Genizah scholar Jacob Mann. He supported himself by freelance writing until in 1939 he received a specially created readership in post-biblical Jewish studies at the University of Oxford, where he taught until his retirement in 1964. He then settled in Israel and divided his last years between New York, where he was visiting professor at Queens’ College in City University and Stern College, and Jerusalem. He died in Jerusalem on 21 June 1970. Roth’s literary output was immense, ranging from definitive histories of the Jews both globally and in several particular countries, to bibliographical works, studies of painting, scholarly research, notably on the Dead Sea scrolls, and biographical works. But his crowning achievement was the editorship of the Encyclopaedia Judaica, which appeared in the year of his death. Throughout his life Roth collected both books and manuscripts, and art objects.
