For the next 18 years, she was held in captivity, but apparently did not try to escape and, over time, developed a close relationship with her kidnapper. Her stepfather said that she “has strong feelings with this guy” and “feels it's almost like a marriage.” (Laura Fitzpatrick, "A Brief History of Stockholm Syndrome," Time, Aug. 31, 2009) After 10 months in the hands of a kidnapper, Shawn Hornbeck called police to report his stolen bike. The captive gave his first name, Shawn, and as his last name the surname of his abductor, Devlin. (Ibid.) He stayed with his captor three more years, never escaping even while the man was away working at his two jobs. There are many reported cases of victims becoming bonded to and even feeling compassion for and loyalty to their captors. In Stockholm, Sweden, two thieves held four bank employees hostage at gunpoint in the bank's vault for six days. “When the victims were released, their reaction shocked the world: They hugged and kissed their captors, declaring their loyalty even as the kidnappers were carted off to jail.” (Ibid.) Psychologists think the victim comes to perceive the captor as the one controlling survival and life itself. Thus the victim aligns with the captor out of pure self-interest. We acquiesce to ……………………………………… our controllers Uncommon? No. In a broader sense, most of us without protest agree with those who have come to dominate our culture. 9 10 From infancy upward, external influences help shape our values. Most people do not question the worldview which is imposed upon them, assuming that what they think and practise is simply the way it is. When challenged, they often defend themselves. They are held captive to their thinking – which they don't realize is often seriously off track. Globalists have seized control Most are not aware that our world has been taken captive. Forces hostile to us have taken over our planet – our courts, our governments, science, education, the media, the entertainment industry, the medical industry, the legal and illegal drug trade, and they have infiltrated mainstream religion as well. And we have fallen victim to the same syndrome as a kidnap victim, passively identifying with our malevolent captor! Strange, but true! Our whole world has been held captive for thousands of years – and we have come to identify with our captors . And they, in turn, are controlled by others …unseen. As New Zealand government figure Murray McLean admitted to me, “We are not the ones in control. We are following the directions of internationalists outside the country.” It is they who are plunging our world into its current financial crisis. They need to collapse every nation’s economy, so they can replace it with their One World Government. A Conspiracy Theorist statement? No, it is a statement of fact. They control the shadowy Bilderberg Group, a financial, political and corporate elite who, at a meeting in Greece in mid- May, 2009, agreed that in order to continue their drive towards a New World Order, the US Dollar has to be “totally” destroyed. 10 11 The extermination plot Not only that. A frightening agenda is currently being put into operation – to eliminate most of this world’s population. New World Order planners say this needs to be done, so they can have their Utopia world. In 1974, in an address to the National Security Council, former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger presented 2 billion people as the desired level of reduction, but in fact the depopulation policy may seek a 2-4 billion reduction, or up to

  • Greco-Roman Culture and the Galilee of Jesus
GRECO-ROMAN CULTURE AND THE GALILEE OF JESUS Greco-Roman Culture and the Galilee of Jesus, the first book- length investigation of this topic, challenges the conventional scholarly view that first-century Galilee was thoroughly Hel- lenized. Examining architecture, inscriptions, coins, and art from Alexander the Great’s conquest until the early fourth century CE, Chancey argues that the extent of Greco-Roman culture in the time of Jesus has often been greatly exaggerated. Antipas’s reign in the early first century was indeed a time of transition, but the more dramatic shifts in Galilee’s cultural climate happened in the second century, after the arrival of a large Roman garrison. Much of Galilee’s Hellenization should thus be understood within the context of its Romanization. Any attempt to understand the Galilean setting of Jesus must recognize the significance of the region’s historical develop- ment as well as how Galilee fits into the larger context of the Roman East. MARK CHANCEY is Assistant Professor in the Deparment of Religious Studies at Southern Methodist University, Dallas. He is author of The Myth of a Gentile Galilee (2002, SNTS Monograph No. 118). society for new testament studies MONOGRAPH SERIES General Editor: John M. Court Recent titles in the series 120.

  • First Corinthians
FIRST CORINTHIANS VOLUME 32 The Anchor Yale Bible is a fresh approach to the world’s greatest classic. Its ob- ject is to make the Bible accessible to the modern reader; its method is to arrive at the meaning of biblical literature through exact translation and extended ex- position, and to reconstruct the ancient setting of the biblical story, as well as the circumstances of its transcription and the characteristics of its transcribers. The Anchor Yale Bible is a project of international and interfaith scope: Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish scholars from many countries contribute indi- vidual volumes. The project is not sponsored by any ecclesiastical organization and is not intended to reflect any particular theological doctrine. Prepared under our joint supervision, The Anchor Yale Bible is an effort to make avail- able all the significant historical and linguistic knowledge which bears on the interpretation of the biblical record. The Anchor Yale Bible is aimed at the general reader with no special formal training in biblical studies; yet it is written with the most exacting standards of scholarship, reflecting the highest technical accomplishment. This project marks the beginning of a new era of cooperation among scholars in biblical research, thus forming a common body of knowledge to be shared by all. Hellenism, Sepphoris, Nazareth and the Formation of Christianity James F. Strange University of South Florida Prepared for the 2010 Joint Conference in Hellenism, the American Foundation for Greek Language and Culture and the University of South Florida Interdisciplinary Center for Greek Language and Culture, Feb 18-19, 2010 Arguably the foremost internationally known scholar in the area of Hellenism and the New Testament in the last forty years was Martin Hengel, Professor Emeritus of New Testament and ancient Judaism at the University of Tübingen. The story begins in 1961 when he submitted his doctoral dissertation, titled simply Die Zeloten , to the Tübingen 1 faculty of Protestant Theology. He published this as a monograph in 1961, and it immediately had an effect on my own professors in their understanding of the Hellenistic background to certain events in ancient Judaea up to and including the Roman era. In 1966 he submitted his habilitation treatise to the same Tübingen faculty with the title 2 “Judaism and Hellenism”. His thesis, simply put, was that not only was Judaism in the Greek-speaking Diaspora comfortable with Hellenism, but so was the Judaism of ancient Palestine equally comfortable with Hellenistic culture. In fact, it was actually misleading to distinguish between Palestinian Judaism and Hellenistic Judaism in the Diaspora as though they were two interpretations of the same religion that hardly spoke to one another. 1 Hengel, Martin, Die Zeloten; Untersuchungen zur jüdischen Freiheitsbewegung in der Zeit von Herodes I. bis 70 n.
