  • Greco-Roman Culture and the Galilee of Jesus
GRECO-ROMAN CULTURE AND THE GALILEE OF JESUS Greco-Roman Culture and the Galilee of Jesus, the first book- length investigation of this topic, challenges the conventional scholarly view that first-century Galilee was thoroughly Hel- lenized. Examining architecture, inscriptions, coins, and art from Alexander the Great’s conquest until the early fourth century CE, Chancey argues that the extent of Greco-Roman culture in the time of Jesus has often been greatly exaggerated. Antipas’s reign in the early first century was indeed a time of transition, but the more dramatic shifts in Galilee’s cultural climate happened in the second century, after the arrival of a large Roman garrison. Much of Galilee’s Hellenization should thus be understood within the context of its Romanization. Any attempt to understand the Galilean setting of Jesus must recognize the significance of the region’s historical develop- ment as well as how Galilee fits into the larger context of the Roman East. MARK CHANCEY is Assistant Professor in the Deparment of Religious Studies at Southern Methodist University, Dallas. He is author of The Myth of a Gentile Galilee (2002, SNTS Monograph No. 118). society for new testament studies MONOGRAPH SERIES General Editor: John M. Court Recent titles in the series 120. On the Historicity of Jesus By Richard Carrier © 2014 Section-by-Section Bibliography for Text-to-Speech Rendering to Assist the Visually Impaired - - - For each section of the book you will find below the sources and scholarship relied upon, stripped out of the book in sequential order. Not included are the following works of mine that I referenced often enough that they should just be consulted in their entirety (heeding my remark that my views or conclusions on some points may have changed): Richard Carrier, Proving History: Bayes’s Theorem and the Quest for the Historical Jesus (Amherst, NY: Prometheus Books, 2012). Richard Carrier, Not the Impossible Faith: Why Christianity Didn’t Need a Miracle to Succeed (Raleigh, NC: Lulu.com, 2009). Other than that, everything that follows is divided by section of the book in which it received a footnoted reference. Note that sometimes Bible verses are cited as evidence in the text and not the footnotes. Those won’t be reproduced here, and might not have been read out in the audio either. - - - Chapter 1, Section 1: Mark Goodacre, The Case against Q: Studies in Markan Priority and the Synoptic Problem (Harrisburg, PA: Trinity Press, 2002).

  • First Corinthians
FIRST CORINTHIANS VOLUME 32 The Anchor Yale Bible is a fresh approach to the world’s greatest classic. Its ob- ject is to make the Bible accessible to the modern reader; its method is to arrive at the meaning of biblical literature through exact translation and extended ex- position, and to reconstruct the ancient setting of the biblical story, as well as the circumstances of its transcription and the characteristics of its transcribers. The Anchor Yale Bible is a project of international and interfaith scope: Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish scholars from many countries contribute indi- vidual volumes. The project is not sponsored by any ecclesiastical organization and is not intended to reflect any particular theological doctrine. Prepared under our joint supervision, The Anchor Yale Bible is an effort to make avail- able all the significant historical and linguistic knowledge which bears on the interpretation of the biblical record. The Anchor Yale Bible is aimed at the general reader with no special formal training in biblical studies; yet it is written with the most exacting standards of scholarship, reflecting the highest technical accomplishment. This project marks the beginning of a new era of cooperation among scholars in biblical research, thus forming a common body of knowledge to be shared by all. Hellenism, Sepphoris, Nazareth and the Formation of Christianity James F. Strange University of South Florida Prepared for the 2010 Joint Conference in Hellenism, the American Foundation for Greek Language and Culture and the University of South Florida Interdisciplinary Center for Greek Language and Culture, Feb 18-19, 2010 Arguably the foremost internationally known scholar in the area of Hellenism and the New Testament in the last forty years was Martin Hengel, Professor Emeritus of New Testament and ancient Judaism at the University of Tübingen. The story begins in 1961 when he submitted his doctoral dissertation, titled simply Die Zeloten , to the Tübingen 1 faculty of Protestant Theology. He published this as a monograph in 1961, and it immediately had an effect on my own professors in their understanding of the Hellenistic background to certain events in ancient Judaea up to and including the Roman era. In 1966 he submitted his habilitation treatise to the same Tübingen faculty with the title 2 “Judaism and Hellenism”. His thesis, simply put, was that not only was Judaism in the Greek-speaking Diaspora comfortable with Hellenism, but so was the Judaism of ancient Palestine equally comfortable with Hellenistic culture. In fact, it was actually misleading to distinguish between Palestinian Judaism and Hellenistic Judaism in the Diaspora as though they were two interpretations of the same religion that hardly spoke to one another. 1 Hengel, Martin, Die Zeloten; Untersuchungen zur jüdischen Freiheitsbewegung in der Zeit von Herodes I. bis 70 n.
