The Confluence of Folkloric Maraca Performance and Contemporary Artistry: Assessing the Past, Present, and Inspiring the Future by Jeremy Muller A Research Paper Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts Approved April 2012 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Jeffrey Smith, Chair Michael Kocour Jeffrey Bush Mark Sunkett Glenn Hackbarth ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2012 ABSTRACT Venezuelan maraca playing is largely unknown to musicians with Western Art Music backgrounds. While some composers utilize the instrument and its associated performance practices, the resources available to learn about the subject are limited and scattered. Through research, observations, and studying with correspondences, this document will explore the vastness of Venezuelan musical concepts and maraca techniques to seek out common goals and generate a resource that is accessible to musicians and musicologists. A large part of this research will focus on the Contemporary Music in the Western tradition that has been inspired by Venezuelan maraca playing. I will explain the context in which this music is commonly found and how to apply it to a contemporary setting. The individuals I interviewed span a variety of backgrounds and expertise. All have extensive experience in Venezuelan maraca traditions. Their individual points of view will give unique perspectives to help affix the music of the past to the creation of music in the future. The limited resources on this subject inhibit education, performance quality, new music, and further research. ENSAMBLE GURRUFIO Venezuela 1 El Ensamble Gurrufío nació en 1984 con el fin de abrir paso a un nuevo estilo de música instrumental venezolana; aquel que permite tener como elemento fundamental la improvisación, lo espontáneo, lo inesperado; aquel que da cabida al virtuosismo de cada uno de sus integrantes; aquel que propone ejecuciones únicas e irrepetibles. Gurrufío ha actuado en numerosos escenarios de Venezuela, entre los que destacan las salas Ríos Reina y José Félix Ribas del Teatro Teresa Carreño, el Aula Magna de la Universidad Central de Venezuela y el Teatro de la Opera de Maracay. Desde 1991 el Ensamble ha realizado una serie de giras internacionales que incluyeron presentaciones en el Japón, país donde cumplió una exitosa gira por 22 de sus más importantes ciudades promocionando sus discos compactos; igualmente se desplazó a Brasil, las Antillas Holandesas, Ecuador; México (en el marco del Festival Cervantino en su XIX edición) y los Estados Unidos. En ese país participó en dos oportunidades en Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Digitalizado por la Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango del Banco de la República, Colombia. (Nuevo México), evento que le permitió darse a conocer en otras ciudades; actuó también en otros importantes escenarios de New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver, Seattle y Minneapolis, así como en prestigiosas universida des (UC.L.A., Stanford, Berkeley, Indiana University, University of Illinois, entre otras).

Asdrúbal "Cheo" Hurtado (cuatro y bandola) Luis Julio Toro (flauta) David Peña (contrabajo) Juan Ernesto Laya (maracas) Gurrufio Chamber Ensemble es el nombre con el que en 1984, Cristóbal Soto, Luis Julio Toro y A drúbal "Cheo" Hurtado 1 bautizaron un naciente proyecto musical al que pronto se integró Jesús González en el contrabajo, y quien permaneció poco tiempo en el grupo. Breve fue también el lapso que tardó en consolidarse entre las cada vez más amplias audiencias la denominación que hoy se ha convertido en sello de cal idad e innovación: Ensamble Gurrufio, agrupación que abre paso a un nuevo estilo instrumental venezolano el cual permite tener con10 elemento fundamental lo espontáneo lo inesperado, ese que da cabida a la improvisación y al virtuosismo de cada uno de sus integrantes, aquel que propone ejecuciones únicas e irrepetibles. En 1989 se vinculó a este virtuoso trío el contrabaj ista David Peña, quien se incorporó plenamente en 1991, año que marcó un momento fundamental para el grupo al iniciar su proyección inter nacional con tres exitosas giras que lo llevaron a diversas ciudades de Japón, Brasil y Estados Unidos. Presencia emblemática en la agrupación, además de cohesión y suerte, el ingreso de David Peña aportó la armonía y el conocimiento de las más arraigadas tradiciones populares urbanas y el manejo de las expresiones musicales de origen afrovenezolano. Posteriores presentaciones en Colombia, Chile, Antillas Holandesas México, Alemania, España, Francia y Reino Unido, entre otros países, han convertido al Ensamble Gunufio en una referencia mundial de altísimo nivel de la música tradicional venezolana, a cuya riqueza ha aportado elementos contemporáneos que han hecho de la agrupación una versátil propuesta popular-académica.
