En general así se designa a los oriun- dos de Veracruz y con este término se adjetiva a ciudades, música, platillos típicos y otros elementos representativos del Estado. De manera que es común oír hablar del puerto jarocho, de la música ja- rocha y de la comida jarocha. También es frecuente que esta palabra se asocie con un estilo de vestir, tocar y bailar en los ballets folclóricos. Esos jarochos vestidos de blanco son un estereotipo reciente que ha permeado la visión popular de lo que son los veracruzanos. (Aguirre 1937) The historical Sotavento has been consolidated by means of long-term processes and has developed a regional identity, evident in numerous physical manifestations, beliefs, celebrations, attitudes, and other cultural features. One of this identity’s most relevant and visible elements is son jarocho music. This traditional genre goes beyond the strictly musical, since in reality it is an entire cultural complex inserted into various urban and rural settings, where mestizos, afro-mestizos, and other indigenous groups participate.

In Veracruz, Mexico, liver diseases are important causes of mortality, and the prevalence reports of these viruses are scarce. This study sought to determine the prevalence of these infections in blood donors, in order to increase the safety of blood products in this region. Methodology: A retrospective study was performed on blood donors who attended the Veracruz State Blood Transfusion Center from 2006 to 2010. All samples were screened for transfusion-transmitted infections. The prevalence rates of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) were determined, and demographic data obtained from clinical records were used to evaluate risk factors. Results: A total of 56,377 donors were serologically screened; of them, 403 were seropositive for HCV (357 men and 46 women), and 61 were positive for HBsAg (52 men and 9 women). The overall prevalence rates were 0.72% (0.63%–0.76%) for HCV and 0.11% (0.08%– 0.14%) for HBsAg. The risk factors for HBsAg positivity were being a cattleman and living in the Huasteca Baja region, whereas those for HCV were being a fisherman, living in the Papaloapan region, and having an elementary-level or lower education.

While some composers utilize the instrument and its associated performance practices, the resources available to learn about the subject are limited and scattered. Through research, observations, and studying with correspondences, this document will explore the vastness of Venezuelan musical concepts and maraca techniques to seek out common goals and generate a resource that is accessible to musicians and musicologists. A large part of this research will focus on the Contemporary Music in the Western tradition that has been inspired by Venezuelan maraca playing. I will explain the context in which this music is commonly found and how to apply it to a contemporary setting. The individuals I interviewed span a variety of backgrounds and expertise. All have extensive experience in Venezuelan maraca traditions. Their individual points of view will give unique perspectives to help affix the music of the past to the creation of music in the future. The limited resources on this subject inhibit education, performance quality, new music, and further research.     Carma de Jong Anderson: Joseph Smith Period Clothing 145 Joseph Smith Period Clothing: The 2005 Brigham Young University Exhibit Carma de Jong Anderson Early in 2005, administrators in Religious Education at Brigham Young University gave the green light to install an exhibit (hopefully my last) in the display case adjacent to the auditorium in the Joseph Smith Building. The display would showcase the clothing styles of the life span of the Prophet Joseph Smith and the people around him (1805–1844). There were eleven mannequins and clothing I had constructed carefully over many years, mingled with some of my former students’ items made as class projects. Those pieces came from my teaching the class, “Early Mormon Clothing 1800–1850,” at BYU several years ago. There were also a few original pieces from the Joseph Smith period. During the August 2005 BYU Education Week, thousands viewed these things, even though I rushed the ten grueling days of installation for something less than perfect.1 There was a constant flow of university students passing by and stopping to read extensive signage on all the contents shown. Mary Jane Woodger, associate professor of Church History and Doctrine, reported more young people and faculty paid attention to it than any other exhibit they have ever had. Sincere thanks were extend- ed from the members of Religious Education and the committee plan- ning the annual Sydney B. Sperry October symposium. My scheduled lectures to fifteen to fifty people, two or three times a week, day or night for six months (forty stints of two hours each), were listened to by many of the thirty thousand viewers who, in thank-you letters, were surprised at how much information could be gleaned from one exhibit.
