Normally, I find these books to be fun, fast, reads - a bit goofy, but entertaining. For Steve Valentine, life is very good. It is also almost over. Stephen King Value Collection. It's one thing when a character is a misogynist, which I could totally believe of Dexter, but it's entirely another when I can't find any evidence that the writer thinks this is a bad thing. But yeah, I had to take off a star for his unforgivable dullness through much of this book. Books by Jeff Lindsay. Luckily, however, it is only the Dark Passenger who writes like a twelve year old girl addicted to purple ink. He has played with at least three young boys that we know about and probably more. It just didn't ring true to me. I like TV Rita. Dexter Is Dead. I think the Shadow being eaten by a shark is an accurate representation of what has happened in this book. This may be the first Dexter book since number one that had me laughing out loud. Jun 12, ISBN LitFlash The eBooks you want at the lowest prices. One of the funniest sub-plots in the book is Dexter attempting to do the Cub Scout thing with Cody. Other Editions Once again, I understand that this is just these characters, that Dexter is a sociopath who doesn't like his routine spoiled and Rita enjoys playing house and being run over, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. Doakes is suspended for being in the wrong place, when he should be at his desk as a personnel supervisor. Enabling JavaScript in your browser will allow you to experience all the features of our site. That was very disappointing. And he went satisfied back to his decrepit lawn chair, opened a beer, and watched the playground for a new little friend. The last time I read this much padding in a book I was flipping through a pillow catalog. Category Book. Steve Valentine is a happy man; things have gone his way a lot lately and he thinks they have gone his way again tonight. It goes without saying that when one is playing a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse, one does not need distractions, especially when it is quite difficult to determine who is Tom and who is Jerry. Lists with This Book. A masterful thief plots an impossible crime— stealing the Iranian Crown Jewels. Double Dexter is more focused on Dexter, his marriage and whether Dexter the serial killer will be discovered. He enjoys his day job as a blood spatter analyst for the Miami Police Department. The standard arc is present - Miami serial killer to catch, someone finds out Dexter's killer identity, then it's a game of cat and mouse to see which killer finds the other one first. In only a few moments these dark and silent clouds will shatter the silence of the night with the unbearable bright omnipotence of their might and blast the darkness into flickering shards—and then, only then, the release will come. Cody and Astor are nice side characters, Doakes is clumping along menacingly, and good ole sis, Deborah is toned-down. Soon—but not now, not yet. You have Rita thinking that Dexter's cheating, because he's always disappearing and coming home sweaty. Her failure to cook dinner because she has to do her job - mind, Dexter is working late at his and doesn't seem to think he should ever cook - is construed as her failure as a mother and wife. Only Season 1 follows the book. Soon the clouds will open up and pour down a heavy summer rain, so very soon, because they, too, are full of what they must do, full to the point of bursting, so very full that they, too, must work to hold back the flood that absolutely must come, and soon. Very feminine. I stayed up until the wee hours to finish this. Customer Reviews See All. Double Dexter Writer Jeff Lindsay. Noticeably, characters long dead on the show are alive in the books, characters know more or less about Dexter than they do in the show, major characters on the show are very minor characters here and vice versa, and personalities are starkly different. I love his struggles to fit in with society and to try and read human emotions since he freely admits to not having any. Even his Dark Passenger seems to be bored at times with Dexter playing house. View Product. Robert Masello. False Memory. And a shattering blast of lightning shreds the dark night and shows a large and soft-looking man scuttling across the ground, as if he, too, has felt the dark breath so close behind. And he smiles, a smile of small triumph, something he does a lot these days. One more burst of lightning; the man is very close now, clutching his burden and holding a car key in the air. Stephen King Value Collection. On the other hand, the description of their first day in Key West was hilarious. I'm trying to imagine if I had never seen a Dexter episode, would I feel as much loathing as I do for the books? He looks up and into the rearview mirror and his eyes meet ours for the very first time—only the eyes, showing cool and dark through the slits cut in the sleek silk hood that covers our face. Steve Valentine is a happy man; things have gone his way a lot lately and he thinks they have gone his way again tonight. Books by Jeff Lindsay. Oct 18, ISBN Everything seems to be going as planned until he hears someone enter the home. Double Dexter Reviews Bernard kills Hood and leaves him in Dexter's hotel suite. The boys were all from this neighborhood, which means that their parents are poor and probably in this country illegally. In summation: I've seen series go downhill. One more burst of lightning; the man is very close now, clutching his burden and holding a car key in the air. They take over the sky and hide that pulsing swollen moon that is clearing its throat above them. Apr 19, Eli Hornyak rated it it was ok. The Forever War. Javascript is not enabled in your browser. Dexter studies the witness' blog, finding no clues other than his ex-wife's first initial. All in all, the book was okay, but it doesn't inspire me to pick up what I missed or to wait breathless for the next in the series. He is wrong. Christopher Farnsworth. He is really trying to get into the family life as he sees it. Dexter by Design Dexter Series 4. I hope this was supposed to be a device to show that routine was important to Dexter and any deviation throws him off badly, but this just came off as ignorant, misogynistic whining. Rita is behaving very oddly, and Camilla Figg—always in the background, never any details—is also acting in a most peculiar manner, mangling her sentences even more than Rita most of the time. The Dexter series has certainly gotten better with age. Michael Harvey. Steve Valentine is a clown. Double Dexter is Jeff Lindsay's completely new, wickedly entertaining novel. And pulling off the most incredible robbery ever, for… More. Reading this made me think of the TV show which made me think of Michael C. I swear she said maybe 6 I'd have to say this is one of my least favorite Dexter books. Overall, a so-so thriller. NOOK Book. He has played with at least three young boys that we know about and probably more. The cops come if they have to, and they have to if Somebody calls to report a couple fighting in apartment eleven on the second floor, and if Somebody says the fight ended suddenly with the sound of screaming terror followed by silence, they come quickly. Most people get better at their craft, this was flailing and improv at best and not what I expect from Dexter. There were times where I was yelling at the book about how much of an idiot he was being, that the answer was too obvious. He is my favorite bad guy who does good things in a bad way. Yes, Doakes hates Dexter very fiercely, but simply killing the witness doesn't solve problems without creating more. As an upstanding blood-spatter analyst for the Miami Police Department, he has always managed to keep the darker side of his life out of the spotlight Sure enough, there are just some really, really annoying things about Dexter in print as opposed to Dexter on screen. Meh, I'll never know. Dexter Is Delicious Dexter Series 5. There are colleagues with secret Dexter shrines, Cub Scout camping trips, and the ever-present Sergeant Doakes seriously dude, just go away! Like any self-respecting, totally decent, soundly homicidal guy, Dexter Morgan takes great pride in his work and is careful to remain anonymous.

  • Masculinities in American Psycho and Darkly Dreaming Dexter
Humanities and Social Sciences Review, CD-ROM. ISSN: 2165-6258 :: 08(02):519–534 (2018) FROM TOXIC TO POLITICALLY CORRECT: MASCULINITIES IN AMERICAN PSYCHO AND DARKLY DREAMING DEXTER Petra Fišerová Masaryk University, Czech Republic American Psycho (1991) and Darkly Dreaming Dexter (2004) are two American novels known for having serial killers for protagonists. The gender performances of these two self-proclaimed psychopaths, however, could not be more different; one brings traditional portrayals of violent masculinity to extremes, while the other invents a new take on fictional masculinity. With his desire to punish women, desperation to one-up other men, and frequent attacks of gay panic, American Psycho ’s protagonist Patrick Bateman presents the worst extreme of hegemonic masculinity (as discussed by Connell, O’Neil and others). Driven by his fragile nerves and an even more fragile ego, Patrick often loses control and kills innocent people, his violence all the more heinous and sexualized if the target is a woman. The protagonist of the Dexter series , on the other hand, is an asexual man who has no interest in sexualized violence. Self-possessed, cool-headed, and rational, he knows how to control his bloodlust and channel it productively by hunting other murderers. In pretending to be unremarkable, he positions himself as a submissive man, yet his ego is never threatened by women or other men. Jeff Lindsay’s Dexter Morgan is proof that you can successfully write about a monstrous serial killer in a genre based on hypermasculine tropes without having your protagonist perpetuate the ideals of hegemonic masculinity. Keywords: Hegemonic Masculinity, Counterhegemonic, Control, Crime Literature.

Fatal Attraction: The Serial Killer in American Popular Culture If a single figure can be said to exemplify American popular culture’s apparent fascination with violence, it is the enigmatic serial murderer. The mythos that has sprung up around the serial killer is both potent and ubiquitous; representations occur in various forms of media, including fiction, true crime, film and television, music, and graphic novels. So iconic is this figure, that one can even purchase serial killer action figures, trading cards and murderabilia.1 Notably, this is not an entirely niche market; CDs of Charles Manson’s music can be purchased from Barnes & Noble and, in 2010, Dexter action figures were available to purchase in Toys R Us. Indeed, the polysemic serial killer holds such a unique place in the cultural imaginary that he or she has in some ways come to be seen as emblematic of America itself.

"Dearly Devoted Dexter" (Reviewed by Eleanor Bukowsky JUL 15, 2005) “And so I had learned how to dress neatly and smile and brush my teeth. I had become a perfect fake human, saying all the stupid and pointless things that humans say to each other all day long. No one suspected what crouched behind my perfect imitation smile.” Dearly Devoted Dexter , Jeff Lindsay’s second novel, again features Dexter Morgan, a serial killer with a heart of gold. By day, Dexter is a blood spatter analyst with the Miami police department. Under the light of the moon, Dexter listens to his inner voice, which he calls the “Dark Passenger,” as it impels him to track down people who commit terrible crimes without fear of punishment. Dexter happily takes upon himself the triple roles of judge, jury, and executioner. He gleefully dismembers his victims, as well. However, Dexter is distracted when another monster, who makes Dexter look like Mother Teresa, takes center stage. This individual, known by the nickname of Dr. Danco, literally takes his victims apart, one limb at a time. However, he does not kill his victims.
