The gender performances of these two self-proclaimed psychopaths, however, could not be more different; one brings traditional portrayals of violent masculinity to extremes, while the other invents a new take on fictional masculinity. With his desire to punish women, desperation to one-up other men, and frequent attacks of gay panic, American Psycho ’s protagonist Patrick Bateman presents the worst extreme of hegemonic masculinity (as discussed by Connell, O’Neil and others). Driven by his fragile nerves and an even more fragile ego, Patrick often loses control and kills innocent people, his violence all the more heinous and sexualized if the target is a woman. The protagonist of the Dexter series , on the other hand, is an asexual man who has no interest in sexualized violence. Self-possessed, cool-headed, and rational, he knows how to control his bloodlust and channel it productively by hunting other murderers. In pretending to be unremarkable, he positions himself as a submissive man, yet his ego is never threatened by women or other men. Jeff Lindsay’s Dexter Morgan is proof that you can successfully write about a monstrous serial killer in a genre based on hypermasculine tropes without having your protagonist perpetuate the ideals of hegemonic masculinity. Firstly the writer analyzes about the characteristic of Dexter, and then analyzes about the psychological problem from the concept of Sexual Stage Development and Structure Personality id, ego, and superego of the main character in the novel. The writer uses qualitative method and descriptive analysis technique to analyze the novel. The writer also does some procedures to do this research, such as reading the novel itself, marking the text that relied to the problem, exploring the main character, read many theories which appropriate with the novel and then analyzing and understanding the story. Based on the research, the writer finds that the main character suffers from neurosis disorder, namely Post-traumatic Syndrome that turn him into murderer which are caused by his traumatic experience and the pain in his childhood. His psychosexual development is disrupted in his early age. I just finished it and it's great, and my guest today is New York Times bestselling author, Jeff Lindsay. Jeff, it's wonderful to have you on. Jeff: Well, it's great to be had. Thank you very much. Debbi: Thank you very much. Tell us about Riley Wolfe and what prompted you to write this book. Jeff: Riley Wolfe is a master thief, maybe the best in the world. And the thing about him is for Riley, it's not about the money, it's about the challenge. He had a sort of traumatic childhood that made him grow up with two really overwhelming compulsions. And the first is to steal things that are impossible to steal. It just can't be done. And the second is, if possible, to steal them from the 1%. He has a real deep seated grudge, almost a hatred for the hereditary entitled people who just, in his mind, wallow in the money and sort of walk on everybody else with their ingrained privilege. In it, Lindsay takes you into the life of a psychopath who will test your morals and ethics on every page. However, a warning in advance of its gruesome and horrifying scenes which are truly not for the faint of heart, but if you are brave, fearless and love a good crime novel, it will be one that you treasure forever. Dexter Morgan is just your average ordinary occupant of Miami, Florida who you would not give a second glance, but things are not always as they seem. The truth is that he lives a second life, a life of a serial killer driven by his dark passenger to kill. There’s a catch though, he only kills other killers. Guided by his foster father from an early age, he learned how to channel his urges and use them for avenging the deaths of the innocent. Now grown up, he works as a blood spatter analyst, has a girlfriend, a relationship with his sister Debra, and kills when he needs. However, his life is turned upside down when the Tamiami butcher comes to wreck havoc on Miami and Dexter’s personal life. One’s ability to relate to the main character is a key part of a novel that most writers have, but Lindsay is not one of these writers.

The interrelation between masculinity, violence and patriarchy in TV Series Dexter MERINA HENAM Research Scholar, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi ABSTRACT While the concept of masculinity is explained by pointing out that masculinity is also constructed and performed like femininity and that it is a construct of patriarchy. Textual analysis is done to unfold a better understanding of masculinity in Dexter. Harry’s code and Dexter’s relationship with the antagonists and female characters are discussed. Dexter challenges the notion of hegemonic masculinity. Harry’s code taught him how to perform the role of a heterosexual man. Though Dexter questions the validity of the code time and again, he cannot function without it. Violence is used as a site to project masculinity, and Dexter and the antagonists too operate their masculinity by using violence. Masculinity and violence are linked in Dexter. Dexter’s relationship with the female characters in the series sheds some light on the type of masculinity he is harbouring. Dexter is able to share a happy and healthy relation with women as long as they are damaged and dependent on him owing to their subjugated and subordinate condition; the moment they become independent, his relationship with women become strained. Hegemonic masculinity induces the idea of subjugation of women.
