The last comprehensive list (Barrio-Amorós 2009c) included a total of 333 species, while the current catalogue lists 387 species (370 anurans, 10 caecilians, and seven salamanders), including 28 species not yet described or properly identified. Fifty species and four genera are added to the previous list, 25 species are deleted, and 47 experienced nomenclatural changes. -

Roberts Professor George Haggerty, UC Riverside Professor Kevis Goodman Fall 2013 Virtue Rewarded: Handel’s Oratorios and the Culture of Sentiment Copyright 2013 by Jonathan Rhodes Lee ABSTRACT Virtue Rewarded: Handel’s Oratorios and the Culture of Sentiment by Jonathan Rhodes Lee Doctor of Philosophy in Music University of California, Berkeley Professor Davitt Moroney, Chair Throughout the 1740s and early 1750s, Handel produced a dozen dramatic oratorios. These works and the people involved in their creation were part of a widespread culture of sentiment. This term encompasses the philosophers who praised an innate “moral sense,” the novelists who aimed to train morality by reducing audiences to tears, and the playwrights who sought (as Colley Cibber put it) to promote “the Interest and Honour of Virtue.” The oratorio, with its English libretti, moralizing lessons, and music that exerted profound effects on the sensibility of the British public, was the ideal vehicle for writers of sentimental persuasions. My dissertation explores how the pervasive sentimentalism in England, reaching first maturity right when Handel committed himself to the oratorio, influenced his last masterpieces as much as it did other artistic products of the mid- eighteenth century. When searching for relationships between music and sentimentalism, historians have logically started with literary influences, from direct transferences, such as operatic settings of Samuel Richardson’s Pamela, to indirect ones, such as the model that the Pamela character served for the Ninas, Cecchinas, and other garden girls of late eighteenth-century opera. -

Upon arrival a guide will greet you and will transfer your Canaima lodge for three nights’ accommodation. After lunch you will embark on a guided excursion to Yuri Falls. Yuri Falls are located some 10km from the Canaima Lagoon by boat. En route the group will stop for a number of fantastic photo opportunities in the unique landscape. Your guide will point out interesting rock formations and other peculiarities found in Canaima. After a short 20 minute navigation you will arrive at a pier where the group will disembark and prepare for a short walk through the jungle. At the falls where you will have some free time for swimming and relaxing before returning to camp for dinner and overnight accommodations. -

Donald Trump has only been president for a few months, but he has already done more to debase United States foreign policy than any chief executive in memory. He has gutted the State Department, purging its senior leadership and vowing to slash its budget by over one-third. He has scuttled the Trans-Pacific Partnership, condemned the North American Free Trade Agreement, called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization ‘obsolete,’ and threatened to defund the United Nations. He has harangued or otherwise insulted U.S. allies like German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe while cozying up to dictators like Russian President Vladimir Putin and Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. He has flip- flopped on such crucial matters as the ‘one China policy’ and the ‘two-state formula’ for Israeli- Palestinian peace. He has ratcheted up tensions with North Korea, approved an ill-thought-out mission to Yemen, and launched massive but ultimately meaningless assaults in Afghanistan and Syria. -

Columbia Journalism School | Tow Center for Digital Journalism Chapter 6 Aggregation: ‘Shameless’ – and Essential A group of middle school students at Brooklyn’s Urban Assembly Academy of Arts and Letters got a special treat one March afternoon in 2011. Just five weeks after the announcement of the $315 million deal in which AOL acquired Huffington Post, AOL’s chief executive, Tim Armstrong, and Arianna Huffington, HuffPost’s co-founder, came to the school to teach a class in journalism. The lesson—or what one could see of it in the short, treacly video account that ran on the Huffington Post—may have told more about the future of the news business than what either Huffington or Armstrong intended.1 A few mo- ments after the video begins, an official of the program that arranged the visit speaks to the camera: “We are delighted that Arianna Huffington and Tim Arm- strong are going to be teaching a lesson on journalism.” What the video showed, though, wasn’t a lesson in how to cover a city council meeting, or how to write on deadline. Instead, the teacher in the classroom told her students, “We’re going to give you headlines that we pulled from newspapers all over the place, and you guys are going to place them and decide what type of news they are.” This, then, was a lesson in aggregation—the technique that built Huffington’s site up to the point that AOL wanted to buy it. In just six years, Huffington has built her site from an idea into a real competi- tor—at least in the size of its audience—with the New York Times. -

By this framing, the continuing popularity of stories about paranormal phenomena and supernatural entities – on mainstream television, or in print genres such as urban fantasy and paranormal romance – may seem to be a regressive reaction against the authority of and experience of living in technoscientific modernity. Nevertheless, the boundaries of science fiction, as with any genre, are relational rather than fixed, and critical engagements with Western/Northern technoscientific knowledge and practice and modern human identity and being may be found not just in science fiction “proper,” or in the scholarly field of science and technology studies, but also in the related genres of fantasy and paranormal romance. -

Phone System WHS Staff Following the dinner, director Jim Muus led both the pages 4 and 5 Once again the Webster Student Council hosted the junior high and high school choir through a number of Food and Toy Drive. Each year families in the district are popular Christmas songs such as Joy to the World and Oh given a little extra help from the Webster High School to Holy Night. Following their performance the junior high make their holiday a bit brighter. There are countless area and senior high band played a few Christmas favorites businesses that help to make this event possible each year.
