INTRODUCTION The village of East Anstey is situated on the edge of beautiful Exmoor. There has been a school here since 1880, the School Board concerned having been formed five years earlier. The Victorian building has, of course, been changed and added to over the years. The school comprises three classrooms, a small hall space, playgrounds and playing fields. Office space and kitchen areas are part of the main building with cloakrooms serving the class spaces. The number of children attending the school has fluctuated enormously under the influence of changes in the law governing age ranges, rural depopulation, war and the closure of other local schools. In recent years, pupil numbers have averaged 40. We draw from a large rural area stretching from Dulverton to . We hope this booklet will prove useful and informative not only to parents, but also to everyone concerned in the life of this, our local village school.

THE SCHOOL AIMS Our basic aim is to educate all pupils to the maximum of their potential. The context in which we reach that aim is important. We have therefore set ourselves these further objectives:  To take a personal interest in each pupil’s educational and social progress, to develop individual talents and to maintain the highest standards of work, discipline, manners and appearance.  To create a secure, inclusive, happy environment in which courtesy and consideration for others play an important part, and thereby fostering a tolerance of those whose views and beliefs one may not share.  To establish an environment within which teaching and non-teaching staff, school governors, advisory colleagues, parents and future parents can work with each other for the successful achievement of these aims.  To fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum and to offer a broad and bal- anced curriculum which is right for every child.  To develop enquiring and creative minds capable of rational argument and artistic impression, and enabling pupils to learn how to acquire, select and record information in a variety of ways.  To equip all pupils with the working skills they need to be independent and confident in all aspects of life, thus promoting self-esteem and satisfaction with their own achievements, a capacity to be self-motivated and the desire to make the best use of time.  To regularly review the operation and performance of the school in the light of current advice and guidance. To achieve these aims our pupils will follow a weekly programme of approximately 23 teaching hours (not including assembly and breaks). We aim to:  enable children (using National Literacy guidelines) to read fluently and accurately with enjoyment, understanding, feeling and discrimination, and to gain familiarity with some recommended texts. To communicate clearly, confidently and accurately in speech and writing in ways appropriate to the particular purpose  enable children (using National Numeracy guidelines) to learn basic mathematical calculations and to develop the understanding and knowledge of mathematical concepts in various situations  enable children (using QCA and other materials) to be aware of the geographical, historical and social developments of peoples, places and times  encourage scientific curiosity (using QCA and other materials) and observation of the natural world  develop the basic skills leading to physical co-ordination and agility  provide opportunities to develop creative abilities and encourage aesthetic awareness  provide religious and moral education (using the Devon agreed syllabus) that makes them aware of the thinking, the behaviour patterns and the writings that together influence our lives and reflect our Christian Heritage and also the lives and culture of others

GENERAL INFORMATION Session times Morning : 9.00 am - 12.00 pm Afternoon : 1.15 pm - 3.30 pm Supervision Times Supervision of the children is only provided ten minutes before the beginning of the morning session (8.50 am) and for ten minutes at the end of the school day (3.40 pm). Before and after these times, children remain their parents’ responsibility. A member of staff is always on duty during lunch and break times. In addition, a mealtime assistant is employed to look after children during the lunch break. School Roll In September 2013, the number of children registered at the school was 47. 2014/2015 Term Dates Summer 2014 Wednesday 23rd April to Thursday 24th July May Day Holiday - Monday 5th May Half term - Monday 26th May to Friday 30th May Non-pupil days - Tuesday 22nd April & Friday 25th July Autumn 2014 Monday 8th September to Friday 19th December Half term - Monday 27th to Friday 31st October Non-pupil days - Thursday 4th and Friday 5th September Spring 2015 Tuesday 6th January to Friday 27th March Half term - Monday 16th to Friday 20th February Non-pupil days: Monday 5th January Summer 2015 Tuesday 14th April to Wednesday 22nd July May Day holiday - Monday 4th May Half term - Monday 25th to Friday 29th May Non-pupil days: Monday 13th April and Thursday 23rd July Admission to School We follow the single term entry policy as follows:

Birthday falls Can Start School Full Or can defer until Statutory School Age -Time 1 Sept– 31 Dec September following Following January January following 4th birthday 5th birthday 1 Jan – 31 Mar September following Following January or April following 5th 4th birthday April birthday 1 Apr– 31 Aug September following Following January, September following 4th birthday April or September 5th birthday (would miss Reception class)

Application for admission to the Reception Year should be made to the admissions team in Exeter (full details available from the school). We do try to make a brief home visit to enable your child to spend a little time with their new teacher in the security of their own home before facing the big challenge of the first visit to the class. The introduction programme can then be continued with children coming to school for one or two sessions a week for the term before they begin full time. We have an excellent pre-school based at the school with whom we liaise closely regarding children moving up to school.

At 11+ At the end of their time at East Anstey, most children transfer to Community College and care is taken to ensure that the transfer is as smooth as possible. During the Autumn and Summer term staff from South Molton visit the school to discuss the changeover with the children in Year 6 and staff, and children spend two full days at the Community College. Parents are encouraged to visit South Molton Community College, and their details can also be found on their website at www.smcc.devon.sch.uk. Strong links exist between the two schools and opportunities are available to us to visit South Molton Community College to observe our pupils’ progress.

Special Educational Needs All children are unique and will develop at different rates. The staff of the school who are involved with your child’s education will be continually monitoring and assessing his/her development. If the class teacher, head teacher or you, the parent, has any major concern about your child’s development or behaviour, you will be contacted, or you should contact the school. Together, we will then work out suitable ways of providing help. This could include individual or group programmes of work (the school follows the National code of practice for Special Educational Needs) which will concentrate on the particular difficulty, perhaps referring a child for tests to check on such things as hearing and eyesight. It may involve the school asking for help from the Psychological Service, Learning Support Team or from one of the Advisory Teachers employed by the Education Department. In the vast majority of cases the school, in cooperation with parents, will be able to ensure that all children are able to reach their maximum potential. If, however, we are not satisfied that appropriate progress is being made, in consultation with parents we will ask for the child to be fully assessed.

THE CURRICULUM

The National Curriculum The National Curriculum is designed to give every pupil the knowledge, skills and range of personal experiences which are essential to all pupils to prepare them for the world of work and to become active and confident members of the community. The curriculum has been arranged into Key Stages. At East Anstey your son or daughter will progress through Key Stage 1 (age 5 - 7, school years 1 & 2) and Key Stage 2 (age 7 - 11, school years 3,4,5 & 6). At East Anstey, children are grouped into two classes: Infant Class - Reception class with years 1 and 2 Junior Class - Years 3,4,5 and 6 (sometimes split into years 3/4 and 5/6) All pupils study the following: Four Core Subjects English Mathematics Science (ICT) Eight Foundation Subjects History Geography Art Design Technology(DT) Music Religious Education Physical Education(PE) Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE) Schemes of work are followed in all areas and children’s progress is carefully monitored throughout. Approach to Teaching Classes are taught using QCA schemes of work and topics, together with the Numeracy and Literacy programmes. This ensures that the Programmes of Study within the National Curriculum are covered. You will find a range of teaching methods within the school in order to match children’s ability to the tasks. A mixture of individual, group and whole class teaching is therefore very much in evidence. Children are regularly assessed throughout their time at East Anstey. They are levelled in line with the national curriculum and tested against national standards in the Standard Attainment Tests (SATs). Literacy Reading and writing are taught in many stimulating ways through a variety of opportuni- ties. Children learn through drama, debate, fiction, non-fiction, poetry etc. in line with National Literacy guidelines. We need to enlist the active support of parents in the children’s reading programme to complement the National Literacy scheme. Books are sent home to be read with enjoyment by the child and parent together. A reading record is included and your remarks help to ensure that the next book suits your family’s taste and the child’s attainment level.

7 East Anstey Primary School

Numeracy The school follows the National Numeracy scheme. Children are taught all mathematical skills so that they can be applied in a variety of situations. Tables are taught, and calculators are used to increase children’s mathematical awareness.

ICT ICT is a vital and integral part of the curriculum and a major subject in its own right. Children have wide access to systems and are taught a variety of skills.

Science and Technology These have become increasingly important areas of the primary curriculum. The school acknowledges the need for children to relate science to everyday life and employ investigational skills to develop an understanding of the environment.

Foundation Subjects These include programmes for history, geography, DT, art, music, PE and PSHE.

PE and PA (Physical Activity) The school emphasises physical activity through daily physical exercise and teaches a wide range of sports, games, dance and gym activities.

Sex Education There is a PSHE programme, following national guidelines, throughout the school, with a Sex Education element specifically for Year 6 children (from which parents are able to request the removal of their child if they wish). Parents of pupils in Year 5 are also given the opportunity for their children to take part.

Religious Education Children attend a daily Act of Worship at school and receive Religious Education in accordance with a syllabus agreed by the Local Authority, which is non-denominational. It is open for parents to request that their children be wholly or partly excused from either or both of these activities. Any such requests should be made to the Headteacher.

Health Promotion The school holds National Healthy School Accreditation. We promote healthy eating with Fresh Start menu, a healthy tuck shop and the Infant Fruit & Vegetable scheme.

Safeguarding The school and governors are committed to safeguarding and the well-being of all pupils and staff. This includes adhering to national policy for recruitment and checks, strict health & safety policy and record keeping. Full details are available upon request.

PARENTS’ PARTICIPATION Consultation Family open afternoons are held termly when children invite their parents to see their work and their school. In addition, more formal parent consultations are held in the Autumn and Summer terms when appointments are allocated to those wishing to meet with their child’s teacher. Parents are always welcome to discuss with staff and governors any matter about their child, the school or education in general. Individual appointments may be made with either the Head of Teaching and Learning or the Headteacher. We welcome comments and we want to hear about any concerns you may have - small matters resolved quickly can avoid misunderstandings and worried children. Homework How can I help my child’s education at home? Do show an interest in everything your child shares with you. Encourage him/her to improve on their last performance rather than comparing their work with that of another individual. Find time for some real conversation with your child. Read to him/her and encourage him/her to read for his own pleasure and information. Full details of the school’s homework scheme are given in the starter or moving on packs which are supplied to all children at various stages throughout their time at East Anstey. If school or work becomes a source of worry to your child and you are unable to help, please consult the school quickly.

Home-School Agreement In line with the government directive to all maintained schools, the governing body have consulted with staff, parents and pupils and have prepared a home-school agreement. This agreement is designed to encourage partnership and co-operation between the home and school for the educational benefit of the children. Existing staff, parents and pupils have been invited to sign the agreement as are all new pupils and their parents as they join the school. It should be noted that, although it is hoped that pupils and parents will sign the agreement in the spirit of goodwill and support, there will be no sanctions against children whose parents do not feel able to do so. A copy of the latest home-school agreement is shown on the next page.

DISCIPLINARY POLICY General We are a small school and are proud of our educational style. The high teacher to pupil ratio means that behaviour and learning are closely monitored. School Rules We have clear behaviour / discipline codes and expectations are high. Our policy is that any action which is potentially dangerous to the property or person, which disrupts the efficient work of the school or which destroys the happiness and security of the pupils and staff, is a breach of discipline. Sanctions The method used to punish a breach of discipline obviously depends upon the seriousness of the breach. There are various tried and trusted methods which we consider reasonable. The verbal rebuke or ‘telling off’, the forfeiture of play time, ‘keeping in’, the imposition of extra work and the withdrawal of privileges. We would expect to advise parents early and invite their assistance in the event of more persistent or serious misbehaviour. For very serious offences the Headteacher does have the right to suspend pupils from attendance but must immediately inform the school governors. This action is extremely rare since its use may involve everyone from the pupil to the Secretary of State. We are extremely fortunate in our school that the vast majority of our pupils are pleasant and well behaved. The guiding principle behind the administration of punishment is that it should be done in the manner of firm and well intentioned parents. If at any time your child reports an incident, please contact the school immediately so that the matter can be dealt with. COMPLAINTS PROCEDURE The Education Reform Act required schools and LEAs to inform parents of ‘the procedure for complaints about the curriculum and related matters’. Parents have the right of appeal against a decision by an admissions authority in England not to admit their child to the school of their choice. Arrangements for making a complaint have been formalised and details of this procedure are available from the Headteacher. EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES AND INCLUSION The school is committed to providing a fully inclusive educational experience. We have equal opportunities policies for children and staff and fully comply with the latest discrimi- nation legislation. We aim for tolerance and inclusion at all times, regardless of race, gender or educational need.

12 East Anstey Primary School

ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL If your child has been absent we require either a note or a telephone call giving the reason; in this way the small chance of truancy is diminished. Any absence that we are not informed about has to be recorded as unauthorised. If your child is ill while at school, you will be contacted. If the child needs to be sent home, you will be asked to collect him/her. An alternative telephone number in the event of an emergency is very important. A holiday form must be filled in if any pupils request a holiday during term time. National regulations are strict on such matters and may be found on the back of the form which is available from the office. Rates of absence during 2012/13 Authorised 4% Unauthorised 0% SCHOOL DRESS The school colours are maroon and black or grey. The governors hope and expect all pupils will wear regulation sweatshirts which are available in school. It is essential that all clothing is marked with the child’s name. For P.E. a maroon polo shirt, a pair of navy shorts and a pair of plimsolls are required. On swimming days a costume and towel are necessary. Even in a small school, children still manage to lose things. We try to find articles when asked but we cannot be held in any way responsible for the loss of any valuable articles, toys or money. In the interest of health and safety, make-up and jewellery should not be worn in school. Children with pierced ears may wear simple studs, but these should be removed for PE where possible. Watches may be worn but must be removed for PE, DT and on swimming days.

SCHOOL MEALS School meals are of a high standard. A cafeteria system is followed with supervision by a member of staff. Good table manners are encouraged at all times. A few children bring their own packed lunches and eat with the rest of the school. Children are encouraged to try new dishes. Meals are either cooked on site or at our sister school, Bishops Nympton, and brought over to East Anstey.

The cost of a school meal is currently £2.20. It is helpful if we receive money for the week on Monday morning in a sealed labelled envelope. Children who are absent having paid for a dinner are credited with the relevant amount the following week. Please note that meals cannot be provided after 2 weeks’ arrears. All the children of parents receiving Job Seekers Allowance or Income Support are entitled to free school meals. Application forms for free meals can be obtained from the school or from the area Education Office. Only one application need be made even though children in the family may attend different schools. Children may bring a mid-morning snack but sweets are forbidden and chocolate, crisps and sweet biscuits are discouraged. A tuck shop is available for junior children selling fruit, cheeses and cereal bars. Milk is on sale to infant children (10p per cup) during morning play, and fresh fruit is provided free under the School Fruit & Vegetable scheme. A good breakfast makes a good start to a busy day! Children bringing packed lunches are supplied with water, and this is also available throughout the day. SCHOOL TRANSPORT has a policy on the provision of school transport. It provides, for example, for free school transport where a pupil of compulsory school age lives beyond the statutory distance from the school designated by the Local Education Authority who serve the same address. The statutory distance is defined as 2 miles for all primary school children. To qualify, the statutory distance is measured by using the shortest route between the home and the school. Transport is also provided to pupils registered at a school that is nearest to their home when this is not the designated school and if beyond the walking distance and suited to the age, ability and aptitude of the child.

14 East Anstey Primary School

There are exceptions to this policy. Some pupils may be given free transport for special reasons when they live within the statutory distance—for example, on medical grounds. It is a parental responsibility to arrange for children to travel in safety between the home and picking up and setting down points. They are also responsible for their children while they are waiting for transport and when they leave the transport at the end of the day. Where the Authority is not obliged to provide transport, it is a parental responsibility to make arrangements for and meet the costs of travel between home and school. Where spare seats on the County Council’s school transport vehicles or contractor’s vehicles are available, these may be occupied by children not entitled to free transport on the purchase of a concessionary ticket. Adequate warning will be given to parents should the concession need to be withdrawn. If parents are unhappy about the way in which the policy has been applied, staff at the Divisional Education Office will be willing to discuss any concerns. An appeal procedure exists. Further information and a full policy statement is available from the Divisional Education Office. CHILD PROTECTION The school places the highest value on child protection and there is a legal process for us to follow. In Devon, the Social Services Department, District Health Authorities, Education and Probation Departments and Police along with other agencies, have together agreed procedures to be followed in the case of actual or suspected child abuse. Often help can be given to the family without resorting to legal action. Very occasionally it is necessary to protect the child by means of an Emergency Protection Order to remove the child. This step cannot be taken without adequate evidence and no Social Worker may remove a child from the care of his/her parents without obtaining such an Order from a Court or Magistrate. In certain circumstances, a Police Officer may remove a child without recourse to a Court or Magistrate when acting in the child’s best interests in order to afford protection. The name of a person expressing concern can be kept confidential, but parents may find out the identity of the source of the referral from the information supplied. Schools and others who provide services to children endeavour to work openly and in partnership with parents. We are all responsible for protecting children. INSURANCE The Education Authority is insured against its legal liability for any injury, loss or damage caused to pupils as a result of negligence on its part or that of its employees, servants or agents. Pupils attending the Authority’s schools are not otherwise insured for personal accident benefit while on educational premises or taking part in recognised activities outside the school. The Authority expects all employees and pupils to accept full responsibility for their personal possessions, including money, and to consider taking out personal insurance to cover any risks. INJURY In the event of your child having an accident or being taken ill at school, whenever possible, you will be notified immediately. However, so that we can take prompt action should the need arise, you will be asked to sign authorisation for us to initiate emergency treatment with the local GP or with the hospital casualty service.

15 East Anstey Primary School

MEDICAL SERVICES The school nurse makes routine visits to the school during the year. Parents will be informed when their child is due to be called for a medical check-up. Please notify us of any health problems which may affect your child’s work or behaviour. MEDICATION Should a child require medication at school, this should be administered by the parents. It is not the responsibility of the staff to administer medicines. However, in exceptional circumstances this may be done at the discretion of the staff. If your child is asthmatic and uses an inhaler, the school expects your child to look after the inhaler unless you advise us otherwise. Would you please advise the school if your child is an asthmatic and needs to keep an inhaler in school. (There is a volumatic dispenser available for emergencies and staff have been instructed in its use). SCHOOL FUND From time to time fund-raising events are held and the profit goes to the school fund. This money is used to buy those extras for which no grant is available and to supplement our Capitation Grant. We always appreciate the generosity of parents on such occasions and the time they give up to work for the school. The School Fund is audited annually and the accounts are submitted for examination by the Governors on behalf of the County Education Committee.

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES The children take part in Music Festivals in the area. The school also enters football and netball teams when local matches take place. Residential Trip We are able to offer children over 8 a residential opportunity at a specialist outward bounds facility. We employ a stringent risk assessment policy and details of the activity centre are available on our website. The Church The Parish Church and Methodist Chapel are used for concerts and festivals at Christmas and Harvest. The local Anglican Vicar is a regular visitor to the school.

Out of the Caves - residential trip 2014

Lunchtime and After School Activities Children have an extensive range of playground activities for use at lunchtime, both indoors and out. Computers are sometimes available for the children to use during the lunch break. After school or lunchtime clubs are held throughout the year and include football, art, tag rugby, netball (high 5) film, music and computers. These operate on a seasonal basis and run if interest and numbers allow. Swimming At present the school is able to go to the public swimming pool at Tiverton for 10 sessions in the Spring term. We rely on all parents making a voluntary donation of £25.00 per child (equivalent of £2.50 per session) to contribute towards the costs of the bus. If this is likely to cause a problem, please do not hesitate to contact the Headteacher.

17 East Anstey Primary School

Music Tuition We currently offer keyboard/piano and violin tuition. Sessions are run by a local music tutor and are held weekly during term time for any pupils who are interested. Newsletter This is a half termly update and includes details of all other school activities for both children and parents. Charging The Education Reform Act 1988, called for a review of Charging for School Activities. Copies of the County and school governing body’s charging and remission policies under the Act are available for inspection at the school or on the website. Parental Consent We feel it is an important part of their education to take children out of school on occasions. Such visits will usually be in connection with projects being studied. Risk assessments are carried out in advance of every excursion. Children, adequately supervised, may sometimes be taken out of school for a walk in the locality. We ask your permission to do this generally without notifying parents on every occasion. If you do not wish your child to leave the school premises for such walks without prior consent, please contact the Head Teacher. Longer trips or those requiring transport require specific permission and you will be notified about these separately.
