Seven cardboard boats were built and participated in the First Annual Cardboard Boat race on Labor Day, brain child of organizer Barry Lawton. Creativity abounded as the designs varied in shape, size and decoration. Adherence to the rules was questionable, though they were all made out of cardboard and no more that 2 60’ rolls of duct tape. The race course was set inside of the marina corral with the start at the dinghy float and a turning mark at the end of the corral.

Many thank to Janine Stanton, Nancy McHugh and all their ducklings for help with this popular event. To the right Jane Glisser- man sells ducks to the Montalto family. Over 400 ducks raced this year.

Duck rescue and retrieval is always a fun part of the event for the children. This year a new element was added with the increasing popularity of kayaks at CPYC. Only one kayak flipped in the scurry to catch as many ducks as possible.

▲The duck fleet spread out with the leaders tak- ing off. 1st place went to Paula Klim, 2nd place to Dave Aloise, 3rd to Katie Child’s cat Beelus, and Antea Schlichting had the Lame Duck.

Decorating plastic cups with feathers, eyes, and glue etc. continues to be poplar with many crea- tive ducks emerging as below.

GOING FOR THE GOLD Rhodes 19’s, Thistles, a Raven and a Thunderbird

The dedicated, rag tag pictured group of sail- ors to left appeared at CPYC to sail in the an- nual Rhode’s 19 Gold Cup Regatta on Sept 2. In the usual haphazard fashion the racing, due to start at 11AM, did not get underway until 1PM. Perhaps a reflection on Saturday night activities? Touting its motto as "bring the sailing to the people” the starting line was so close to the club that the boats had to sail inside the marina, making for mayhem. With an easterly breeze, the green can off the town pier was the windward mark. Three various race courses were sailed; windward/leeward twice around, triangle windward/leeward, and up and back. The top finishers were Ralph Wolf, Thistle class; Angela Hickey/Theresa Her- bert, Rhodes 19's; Rich/Steve/Tony Ho- nan, Raven class and Ed "Pudge" Lally/ Mark Mcdonough/Quentin Walsh, Thunderbirds. The regatta was fun for the participants with lots of challenges and slurs bantered about between boats and several embarrassing sail- ing moments as shown to right and below. At the awards ceremony Greg Dolan was ◄A wrapped spinnaker is better than no thanked for his race committee work spinnaker . and Mike "second place again" Gahan for organizing the event. ▼ Running over ones spinnaker at the drop turns the spinnaker into a serious sea anchor

▲The finish line is the other way! It is best to avoid contact with moored boats when sailing downwind.

It is a good idea to take the spinnaker down before the leeward mark as spinna- kers do not sail well upwind. ►
