LMSRF GRANTSINAID RECIPIENT REPORTS: GOLD FOR EPIC RACING! by Stephanie Roble Epic Racing was crowned the U.S. Women's Match Racing National Champion at Oakcliff Sailing Center in Oyster Bay, New York. It was a challenging weekend, bringing a broad range of conditions in heavy, 40 foot boats called SM 40s. Our team of 6 women did an amazing job working hard to make the boat go fast at all times, which is not an easy task. We are proud to be at the top of the eight teams that competed, as each team gave us a run for our money!

The first day was relatively light, shifty and very hot in the harbor right next to Oyster Bay. The focus was just to keep speed on and never let the boat stall on the foils or . This is much easier said than done while match racing and trying to take out your opponent! We finished the first day 5-0 and learned a lot about tactics and strategy (especially in the pre-start) that are specific to these big boats.

We started day two excited about our momentum from the previous day, but knew we had our two hardest races of the first round robin left. Chantal Hearst, who has a lot of experience in these boats, beat us after we were over at the start and had some traffic issues on the with some boats in other races. We then raced the next top ranked skipper, Nicole Breault, who had a great team onboard. We earned a penalty in the pre-start and managed to lead around the course. We set up perfectly to execute a penalty play at the windward mark but misjudged our layline back to the finish and killed the penalty too early, giving her an opportunity to pass us on the last run. We ended Round Robin one 5-2.

As the day went on, the breeze built to a beautiful sea breeze and because of this, we felt much more comfortable in the boats. We were also hungry for more wins after our 2 silly losses in round robin 1. We ultimately finished round robin two 6-1. This meant that we won the double round robin and received honors of first pick for the semis. We chose the 4th place team, Sandy Hayes, and won the series 2-0.

We started the finals on Sunday in 12-15 knots with (instead of genoas) against Nicole Breault. We knew our boathandling and pre-starts would be our strengths but she was much faster. In race 1 we were in control most of the pre-start until the most important final 30 seconds when we stalled out after being to wind. We trailed her off the line and around the course until the final run. From two boat lengths back, we matched her gybe to starboard, hit her breeze, gybed back to port, hit her breeze again, and gybed back to starboard right behind her. At this point we were holding her out from finishing but were restricted by rule 17, which means you have to sail your proper course (to the finish). We perfectly executed a double gybe later on so that we could continue to hold her out from the finish. It was a very exciting comeback and amped us up for race 2.

Race 2 she had us tangled up in the dial up but after we broke free, we rallied for a "wide right" start in the breeze. This is very powerful as we were able to hold on her hip most of the beat until layline. We led

Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation2 August 2014 Lake Michigan SuRF Newsletter downwind, but she passed us by getting to the right of us on the second upwind beat. On the last run, we were all set up to match her gybe to starboard and roll her to the finish. The girls perfectly executed the gybe and we had a very close, photo finish to take the series.

It was an incredible weekend of sailing. Women's match racing is booming in the States right now and that was proved by the level of sailing at this event. Our boathandling was INCREDIBLE and the attitude was right on par. The women worked so hard and gave it their all whether we were ahead or behind. A huge shout out to Janel Zarkowsky (main/tactics), Maggie Shea (trim), Holly Poole (pit/trim assist), Liz Shaw (/) and Martha Pitt (bow). They crushed it!

A huge thank you to our only fan for the weekend, Mary Lou Scott, for coming down to cheer us on. Thank you to Oakcliff, US Sailing and Darcy Cook for running an excellent event. Thank you to all of our fans and supporters who help us make these events happen. And last, thank you to Helly Hansen for our team swag and making us look good!

PHRFECTION PORTTOPORT RACES A CREATIVE SOLUTION by Gail M. Turluck PHRF Offshore sailboat racers have a great oppportunity to make a race series on Lake Michigan without necessarily first gathering at the traditional centralized starting location off of Chicago. Thanks to the creativity and leadership of Dierdre Martin (owner of Fantome ) and support from Larsen Marine in Waukegan, Illinois, the PHRFection Port-to-Port Race to Michigan City, Indiana, was created.

This race series brings together racers from different areas with minimal travel to the starting areas and maximum fun at the destination. The organizers give latitude for starting location and time so that fleets can finish before the time limit. The organizers like the fleets from four different harbors to arrive in time for dinner and the party.

Racers may start from any one of three venues: Waukegan, Illinois; Chicago, Illinois (with a north or south option); or St. Joseph, Michigan. Racers starting from Waukegan may start either on Friday, August 8, 2014, at 6:00 pm, or Saturday, August 9, 2014, at 8:30 a.m. Those starting from Chicago (north) or St. Joseph start on Saturday, August 9, 2014 at 10:05 a.m. Those locations will simply make their departure at the appropriate time, on their honor! This has always been a self-policing sport with deep trust an important part of the experience. Those leaving from Chicago (south) will have the opportunity for a more traditional starting line experience, provided by the Midwest Open Racing Fleet, with starts for JAM & Cruise ('9', 'V' flags) at 10:05 a.m.; MORF Spin ('Q' flag) 10:10 a.m.; Non-MORF Spin ('5','4','3','2','1' flags) 10:15 a.m.; and MORF ('T' flag) 10:20 a.m.

Thanks to some technical staff, scoring is done with factors to determine which boats made the most effective use of their equipment and weather conditions to arrive the fastest, but weighted so those that sail farther aren't penalized for the distance (to the best of the scoring adjustment's ability). This is a FUN race, not a micro-managed, caliper laden, picayune championship. Get your boat out and come and play!

Michigan City Yacht Club supports the finish of this race and will have a Race Committee with a finish line on station on Saturday. Upon finishing, there will be no-cost (FREE!) docking off of Millenium Park in Michigan City. The Michigan City In-Water Boat Show is being held coincident to this race series and racers get free tickets to the show!

For the return race to home ports on Sunday, August 10, 2014, starts will be given by the Michigan City Yacht Club set by return location, with first warning at 9:00 a.m. Yachts will take their own finish times and report them as described in the Supplemental Sailing Instructions. THE RESPONSIBILITY WE HOLD - Part 4 of 4 by Glenn McCarthy Last year when a government agency threatened the closure of Wilmette Harbor , we needed to explain to government officials why this harbor needed to remain open to boats and boating services . Upon reflection, when we turn the table back on us, it is impressive the responsibility we hold. What responsibility do you ask?

Our responsibility as stakeholders in sailing is to provide a vibrant, living, v iable club not just for your own selfish utility now, but for the future members and sailors 100, and 500, years from now. All of us are stewards of the grounds we walk, the grounds will be here long after we are gone. They aren’t making any more lakefro nt property. Those few parcels of land that hold a yacht club with a harbor nearby are it. Is your club ready for the next 100 years? Is it a magnet for sailing? How is it designed so it a magnet for sailors? Do people come excitedly expecting g reat things as they enter your door?

Some day in the future, if the government considers closing your facility, your club needs a cadre of tools to show to the government just how important your facility is to the vibrancy of your town. Wilmette Harbo r remains open, after the government officials were convinced of the need of keeping this facility open for the good of the public.

NOT WINNING THE MACKINAC by Glenn McCarthy Ten years ago, LMSRF did a survey of the membership. One thing that was repeated in responses is that people wanted articles about boats that didn’t win. “What about the bo ats at the bottom, or the middle?” was asked. It is a given that “Joe Schlitz wins” in every race ever sailed. That headline is monotonous, and most assuredly is guaranteed for every race run. This year in the Chicago-Mackinac we were somewhere between the middle and the bottom (duking it out for last place for many hours). So, what did it take to end up 20th out of 24 boats?

I’d sum it up with we were physically ready, boat almost ready and mentally not.

This year we shifted away from the boat we s ailed for the past nine years to Mackinac, and moved back into a Tartan Ten. Buying the Tartan Ten seven weeks before the Chicago-Mackinac, pretty much sight unseen, didn’t play out well. Once the boat was opened, we learned it had been converted into a day racer and overnight accommodations were gone. Week by week I wrote about rebuild ing it on my blog for the non-sailing public to understand what is involved in rehabbing a used boat. The final article was a summary of the type of work that went into h er (over 80 crew days in those 49 days of ownership) [http://www.chicagonow.com/sail-lake -michigan/2014/07/why-rehab-an-used-boat -wrap- up/ ].

Physically Ready? We all showed up on time, gear in hand, with excellent and plentiful food stored.

Boat Ready? While all six crew pitched in as much as they could, I think we really needed another 10 days to have the boat sea -trialed and 100% ready. The engine reb uild was mostly complete at 12:30 the day before the start of the race (thank God we weren’t in the cruising division!). The one new sail, the , showed up three minutes before we left the dock. We were still drilling holes and installing things the morning of the Mackinac race.

Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation 8 August 2014 Lake Michigan SuRF Newsletter

What else needed attention? Our three compasses were like Marty Feldman with three eyes trying to look at all of them straight in the eye. With the engine not functioning, we didn’t have the chance to compensate the tw o new magnetic deck compasses, nor the electronic SailComp compass. Our watch gave up using the compasses , just sailed by the seat of the pants, and checked the permanently mounted GPS below deck from time to time to make sure we were on the right or jibe and to navigate appropriately. These compasses weren’t off a few degrees, they just provided confusion! The vang just didn’t function well, so we never had the opportunity to crank on it when needed . T his led to the main sail wrapping around the on the run, putting the spreader tip through the patch on the - minor.

For the most part, all of the installations over seven weeks of the rehab project worked flawlessly. The new sink water pump was leaking, but we haven’t had the chance to see if it was the pump, drain, or the seal around the edge of the sink to the countertop that was letting water fall underneath the sink.

We knew there would be flies in this year’s Chicago -Mac kinac race after hearing the Port Huron-Mackinac st ories from one week earlier. Screening was built for the two deck vents, forward hatch, lazarette hatch (opened for ventilation below), but the canopy over the deck opening for the Tartan Ten just wasn’t completely finished, which led to not having things set up to make the screen for the opening to the stairs below.

Mentally Ready? Because we were still putting things together Friday night and Saturday morning of the Mac kinac race, we didn’t have any time to sit down and study weather. We didn’t show u p with a race strategy. We went out on the course and just sailed the wind we had at the time, and did what felt good. We were over at the start of the race (with most of our section, I think only 5 or 6 boats were clear at the start). We went back and restarted, they called the boats numerically by sail number order , it was our luck to have the highest sail number – grrrrr. A few hours later, the Yellowbrick race tracker told us we had moved into 6 th place. But we were the most East boat. I don’t mean East of our section, I mean of the whole fleet. We made it over to the Michigan shore below the Points Sable. We didn’t get in anyone else’s way, no one got in our way, and we were all by ourselves for hours on end. We were all alone. Then a J/105 popped up and we played tortoise and hare with them for six four -hour shifts, they’d get ahead, then we’d get ahead … They did nab us at the finish, as hard as we tried to pass them just one more time.

We started meeting up with our homies in the Tartan Ten section a few miles before Gray’s Reef. We now had hard targets to beat. Eventually we passed two of them, and had the third in our sight coming to the finish, but just ran out of time to get them.

No doubt the boat could win the race . It had good speed and tune; when we were around the other boats we were doing well on them. Mentally, we just didn’t have the time to prepare like we had in years past to study multiple weather predictions, the chance to sit down and plan our whole race strategy, an d then execute that strategy. We just went for a nice comfortable sail.

To do well in the Mackinac, it requires being physically, boat and mental ly ready. Twenty-nine years ago we dropped out of the Tartan Ten section 12 days before the Mackinac race when we bought a C&C 43 and put it on the starting line instead. We experienced the same results relatively that year , we were mentally ready, but the boat wasn’t ready, nor did we have a strategy in hand!

WHAT ARE OTHER REGIONS OF THE COUNTRY DOING, THAT LAKE MICHIGAN ISN’T? Part 4 by Glenn McCarthy There are 37 Regional Sailing Associations across the U.S. that are just like LMSRF. But they are not identical. What are the Eastern RSA’s offering their membership that LMSRF hasn’t yet developed?

1. Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association www.cbyra.org , The homepage includes news of attempts at increasing participation: SSA held an Open Sailing Demo Day. 2. Florida Sailing Association www.floridasailingassociation.org , zilch 3. South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association www.sayra-sailing.com , zilch 4. Virgin Islands Sailing Association, zilch 5. Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association www.bbyra.org , lots of attaboy/attagirl trophies 6. Mid Atlantic Yacht Racing Association www.mayra.org , zilch 7. North Jersey Yacht Racing Association www.njyra.org , zilch 8. Deep Creek Yacht Racing Association www.dcyra.com, zilch

Note – SAYRA and BBYRA have charity funds to give away.

Comments – While attaboy/attagirl trophies are always a good way to thank those volunteers who make our sport happen, one thing I have noticed looking at the results over years, is they always seem to go to the same crowd, and that crowd is an aging crowd. They don’t seem to be awarded to young sailors or young volunteers.

Summation – LMSRF’s focus is on catering to those who are already initiated into sailing. Should we promote “open sailing days” to those who already sail? In researching open sailing days in 2013, I was only able to stumble upon 3 or 4 of them around Lake Michigan (Club open houses, take landlubbers for a sail, etc.). The tough part is finding them.

If clubs on the lake would share open sailing days with the LMSRF Newsletter Editor, Gail Turluck, at [email protected] , that would make drawing more sailors to our opportunities shooting ducks in a barrel!

LOYOLA ACADEMY GRAD ON WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES WINNING SQUAD by Paola Malcotti The U.S. crew skippered by Nevin Snow is the winner in Open category of the 7th edition of the World University Championship Match Racing competed on Lake Ledro, in Trentino, Italy. Despite the opposing team - led by the Australian Samuel Gilmour - being the favorite of this World Cup as well as title holder from the last edition in Nice in 2012, Americans have had the best performance, with a magnificent race and winning the final.

"We have been favored by optimal weather conditions," said Nevin Snow, "We have captured the best wind, we went faster and reached the finish line first. The satisfaction of winning fighting a sample of the caliber of Gilmour is really great. Thank you to my crew, with whom there was a great team effort."

"I have to recognize that Americans have been able to sail with great speed," answered Gilmour, "And theirs is therefore a deserved victory. Despite the second place, me and my companions go home happy. It was really an exciting Championship."

Optimal weather conditions: sunny and very bright for this latest series of races, with light winds - intensity between 3 and 5 knots - to start the day, then increased between 7 and 8 knots, and then declined again to 5.

In the evening, the awards ceremony and the closing of the event with the presentation of the witness to Australia, the country that in 2016 will host the 8th edition of the Championship.

Sail Chicago held the first-of-the-season Friends and Family Picnic Sunday, June 20. Organized by social Coordinator Pat Webster, the event has become a highlight of their sailing season. This year, almost 100 Sail Chicago members and friends registered for the picnic, held at Belmont Harbor, close to where their cruising boat, Priorities, is docked. "This is by far the largest number of people registered for the event that we've ever had," remarked Webster. The day dawned rainy. By 1 pm when the picnic started, the rain had stopped, but a dense fog coated the near-shore area. One of their Colgates had been scheduled to sail up from Monroe Harbor had to abort the effort because of the fog, but by 1:30 pm when two of the boats in our fleet were ready to take picnickers out sailing, visibility had cleared, and the boats left the dock filled with happy people. As usual, all the fixin's for the picnic were delicious.

2014 QUEEN'S CUP RACE FAST AND FOG FREE by Peter Engel, Director By the time race day arrived on Friday, June 27, 2014, Milwaukee had experienced thick fog for nine days straight. The Queen's Cup Party on Thursday was completely fogged in and the Summerfest fireworks were cancelled. Friday morning the race committee began to seriously discuss what to do in the event the conditions did not improve. In the 75 years of Queen's Cup history there are very few instances of the race being delayed or cancelled. At 2:00

Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation13 August 2014 Lake Michigan SuRF Newsletter

PM when the first boats in the Cruising Fleet tentatively slipped their lines and began to head out to the starting area the fog still persisted. Suddenly at 2:15 the starting line appeared out of the fog. While downtown was still not visible, fog completely cleared from the south side of Milwaukee Bay.

The racers breathed a collective sigh of relief only to realize that there was very little wind to be found once the boats started. For several hours boats were pointed in every direction searching for a puff of wind. When the wind filled in from the south it soon began to blow 10-15 knots which continued throughout the night. In spite of fears that this would be one of the coldest races in recent history, racers reported relatively warm weather and great sailing conditions. What started out as a drifter soon became a sprint across the lake. Gusty conditions and an encounter with a freighter punctuated what was to be a quick race for all boats.

The first boat to finish was Il Mostro , a Volvo 70 ocean racer, at 12:50 AM. The rest of the fleet finished in rapid succession with the last boat finishing at 8:17 AM. The race commitee stationed on the finish boat, a 50 foot steel sailboat named Kraken , not only enjoyed the accomodations but were able to get off the lake early.

Muskegon Yacht Club were excellent hosts and provided breakfast and lunch buffets, Mount Gay Rum tastings, and a great band to keep the party going. Since the party started early in the morning for all boats there were many happy sailors by the time the awards ceremony was held at 2:30. In addition to the section awards, the following overall trophies were awarded.

Fons America Trophy Awarded to the SSYC PHRF full crew mono-hull with the best overall corrected time: Sensation , Eric Jones and Crew, from South Shore Yacht Club

Silvie Trophy Awarded to the first non-cruising boat to finish: Il Mostro , Peter Thornton, from Chicago Yacht Club

Silver Jubilee Trophy Awarded to the boat with the best corrected time in the largest non-PHRF fleet of 10 or more boats: Cool Change 4 , Robert & Paul Cooley from MAST

The Queen's Cup Awarded to the PHRF fully crewed mono-hull with the best overall corrected time: Viper , F. William Laslow, from Anchorage Yacht Club

Preparations are already underway for the 2015 Queen's Cup Race which is going to South Haven, Michigan. Members of the South Haven Yacht Club will be meeting with South Shore Yacht Club's Special Event Committee later this month to get a head start on making next year's Queen's Cup Race a truly special event.

2014 TRIPP CUP The 2014 Tripp Cup was sailed from Muskegon, Michigan to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on its traditional Wednesday evening before the Queen's Cup Race, this year being June 26. Many sailors are not familiar with the fact that the Tripp Cup is organized by LMSRF Area IV, not one of the yacht clubs.

While the cooperation of the starting and finishing clubs is critically important, leadership in Area IV, including LMSRF Area IV Vice Commodore Gordon Julius and LMSRF Past Area IV Vice Commodore Hiestand, are the legs, eyes, ears and hands that put all the pieces together. Many participants noted the

Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation14 August 2014 Lake Michigan SuRF Newsletter new banners that were displayed and are thankful for the organizational support. Thanks to Vice Commodore Julius, these eye-catching banners were on hand both in Muskegon and Milwaukee for all to enjoy.

The best way to demonstrate that thanks is for owners and crew to join LMSRF as individual members, annually!! It's easy, follow this link and choose your application method: Join LMSRF Paper: http://tinyurl.com/JoinLMSRF-Print , Join LMSRF Plastic: http://tinyurl.com/eJoinLMSRF .

2014 CHICAGOMACKINAC RACE by Gail M. Turluck The Cruising Classes benefitted hugely from a nice south breeze on Friday and overnight that propelled them north into the Manitou Passage and its steady 12-22 knot breeze experienced by all this year while the Racing Classes suffered early on Saturday in very, very light winds at the start, with a number of early starters having to go back to the starting line to avoid an OCS for the race, with winds that eventually built, making this year's race relatively quick, but cool.

Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation15 August 2014 Lake Michigan SuRF Newsletter

Early forecasts had led to a drumbeat thou ght of staying far west of the rhumbline, but as the race start neared there was some thought that initial tracking might not play out so well. In the end, the Yellowbrick tracking record (every boat entered carried a tracking device) showed that about ha lf of the fleet went outside of the Manitou Island Passage, quite a few coming back in before the Fox Islands or Beaver Island, yet four boats stayed west of all the islands —sailing many miles in the elusive hunt for more wind and enough speed to p ossibly come out the race winner. It used to be very few competitors could say they've raced outside the Manitou Islands. That number surely got skewed this year! This illustration from Yellowbrick is remarkable:

Also notable is by the time the fleet was 1/3 of the way up the lake, interpretation of weather forecasts led the boats to take courses that effectively covered the lake, shore to shore, with racing boats. A major change in expectations of conditions came on.

The breeze was initially fore casted to be South 10 -20 starting at the Manitou latitudes through the finish, Friday through Tuesday. However, the reality was that by late Monday, the fan weakened, with a period of dead air around Midnight Monday night, stranding the last few trailing boats that had not quite finished the course. All boats finished by early Tuesday, making this a fast race.

Tuesday's social occasions were enjoyable, in spite of a brief thundershower just about as the Mackinac Sailor's Party was starting. Many postp oned their arrival to wait out the rain, and the party was no less the worse for the slight delay. We're all looking forward to the 107 th Chicago-Mackinac Race, set for July 11, 2015.

201 4 NATIONAL SAILING HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES The National Sailing Hall of Fame (NSHOF) announced the eight people who will make up its 2014 class of inductees: Yachtsman, historian and senior statesman of the sport Henry H. “Harry” Anderson, Jr. (Newport, R hode Island/Mystic, Connecticut); mathematician and navigator Nathaniel Bowditch (Salem,Massachusetts); boat builder and U.S. Olympic Sailing Team boatwright Carl Eichenlaub (San Diego, California); brothers Olaf Harken and Peter Harken (both Pewaukee, Wis consin), respectively, boat builder and sailing hardware designer; naval architect and prolific writer L. Francis Herreshoff (Bristol, Rhode Island/Marblehead, Massachusetts); 1960 5.5 Metre Olympic Gold Medalist and boat builder George O’Day (Brookline, Massachusetts/Dover, Massachusetts); and Grand Prix yachtsman John B. “Jim” Kilroy (Marina del Rey, California), the recipient of the NSHOF’s first Lifetime Achievement Award.

“When the National Sailing Hall of Fame was formed in 2005, a central piece o f its mission was to focus attention on Americans who had made outstanding contributions to the sport of sailing,” said Gary Jobson, President of the NSHOF. “The eight members of the class of 2014 are joining 34 previously -recognized individuals whose achievements – whether on -the-water, at a drafting table or in the administration of the sport – have impacted recreational boaters and competitive sailors alike. By recognizing them and sharing their stories, the NSHOF is preserving the history of the spor t and its impact on American culture while inspiring the next generation of sailors.”

Following a two-month period this spring during which sailors from all corners of the country nominated their choice for induction, a selection committee – made up of re presentatives from US Sailing, the sailing media, the sailing industry, community sailing, a maritime museum, a previous inductee, and the NSHOF Board – reviewed the broad spectrum of nominations.

Inductees are American citizens, 45 years of age or olde r, who have made significant impact on the growth and development of the sport in the U.S. in the categories of Sailing, Technical/Design and

Contributor (coach, administrator, sailing media). Nominations of non-citizens were also considered if they influenced the sport in the U.S., and posthumous nominations were also accepted. The undertaking to recognize Americans who have made outstanding contributions to the sport of sailing is central to the mission of the NSHOF which was formed in 2005 and has completed phase one of its plan to establish a permanent facility on the historic waterfront of Annapolis, Maryland.

The Lifetime Achievement Award will recognize an American citizen, 55 years of age or older, who has had consistent involvement in sailing for a majority of his or her life and had success in the sport while also becoming successful and achieving noteworthy stature in a non-sailing career.

The 2014 class of inductees will be formally celebrated on Sunday, September 28, 2014. The invitation- only Induction Ceremony will be held at the Detroit Yacht Club (Detroit, Mich.) and is sponsored by Rolex Watch U.S.A. and Condé Nast.

CHICAGO MATCH RACE CENTER NEW STAFF Only three weeks into the regular summer season, Chicago Match Race Center's new summer staff has already helped provide important new features to the Chicago Match Race Center program: a North U Youth Clinic, some exciting new additions to the membership program, and a record number of sailors added to the Chicago Match Race Center membership base. We welcome these five members to the Chicago Match Race Center staff.

This year's summer staff members come from all corners of the globe with a diverse array of sailing backgrounds, but one common goal: to get better at match race sailing. This summer program at Chicago Match Race Center represents a unique opportunity for these university-aged sailors to train rigorously, compete at Chicago Match Race Center and build their own match racing campaigns. This year's staff members seek to carry on the legacy of past Chicago Match Race Center team members who have graduated from the program and launched successful professional careers in the sailing industry. In addition to advancing their own skills, the summer staff is a valuable resource for the members.

Hamish Hardy comes to Chicago from Sydney Australia. The 22 year-old graduated from the University of Sydney in 2013 with a degree in Interaction Design. Hamish sees Chicago Match Race Center as an "opportunity to broaden my horizons by living in a new country and gain experience in the sailing industry at a high level sailing center. I hope that I will be able to extend my knowledge and move onto new opportunities in the

Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation17 August 2014 Lake Michigan SuRF Newsletter future." Hamish recently won the Grade 2 Chicago Match Cup Qualifier at Chicago Match Race Center, trimming for skipper Chris St eele from New Zealand.

Shane Diviney, 23, comes to Chicago from Dublin, Ireland where he started sailing at the age of 11. He graduated from Dublin City University where he earned a degree in Marketing. "The opportunity to sail and work with some really good sailors and to get better at match racing" is what attracted Shane to Chicago Match Race Center. Shane was on the winni ng team at the Irish Match Race National Championship.

Ian Liberty is one of three American interns this summer. Ian, 22, was born and raised in Colts Neck, New Jersey and started sailing the at the age of 7. He recently graduated with a deg ree in Economics from St. Mary's College of Maryland. Among his accomplishments was representing the United States at the ISAF Youth World Championships in 2009 and 2010.

Alex Curtiss is one of two local -based interns at the center this summer. Curtis s grew up in Lake Bluff, Illinois where he was able to watch Chicago Match Race Center grow firsthand. "When I started sailing out of Chicago Match Race Center in 2010, I knew one day I would want to work there. That dream has come true." Curtiss current ly attends St. Mary's College of Maryland, where he is seeking a degree in Economics. In the past Alex has won the Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta in 2012 as a skipper.

Will Holz is another local sailor hailing from Wilmette, Illinois. The 19 year -old currently attends Fordham University, where he is majoring in International Political Economy. When asked what attracted him to Chicago Match Race Center, he responded, "I wanted to strengthen my match racing arsenal and figured that Chicago Match Race Center would be the best opportunity to do so." Will's favorite regatta is the Governor's Cup International Youth Match Race Championship where he finished 5th. Will is the second Holz to be in the program, after his brother Peter was an Intern las t year.

US SAILING LEADERSHIP FORUM PART VI by Glenn McCarthy IF YOU WANT TO PRESS THE BUTTON AND GO, BUY A POWERBOAT Not having been much of a writer in life, the past two + years has been an interesting journey. Each day it becomes much clearer that we can’t press one button, and the problems of shrinking sailing fleets disappeared. It is clear that one needs to press a button, flip a switch, spin a wheel, turn a knob, cli ck your heels three times, and then there could be some traction in making change to grow sailing. One fix doesn’t fix it. You need at least two if not three fixes simultaneously to make it grow. It isn’t simple, but it’s not all that hard either.

This is the sixth month in a row reviewing the videos from the February 6 -8, 2014, Leadership Forum in San Diego. We’re looking for reasonable, comprehensive solutions to growing sailing.

Race Management Excellence and Technology It’s Not Just for the America’s Cup - John Craig and Stan Honey Video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v= -nbupHZ6bko&list=PL1haIIzm5I7aVfeS0DwLNN - Fp6I6RRqGh&index=10 1:12:25

GM Summary on Video Presentation - JC - Amateur racing continues to get more and more professional, as a result race management has to get more professional. Some racing boats have software integrated with all of their wind instruments and boat speed tha t continuously learns on what the maximum boat speed is for the boat at each wind speed and each wind angle to the boat, giving the top real target boats speed for the crew. Using this same software on the race committee boat, having loaded the polar diag rams for the entire fleet into the computer, they can run each race beforehand to see how long each section will take to get around the course they are considering. He likes to use private radios with mark set boats, particularly when they are determining when a boat is over the start. Video can help finishes, when the boats are coming in really

Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation 18 August 2014 Lake Michigan SuRF Newsletter fast to finish in strong winds. In deep water or strong current situations, he likes a DGPS driven mark boat. It stays in place much better than an anchored mark. SH - He explains all of the technology of the America’s Cup video work and electronic overlays. When the boats trails included a blue line, some people complained that they were polluting the water (just digital imagery, not something put in the water). The question is, can the technology of the overlay be made for sailing in general? Well, it is really expensive. So they are looking at making a “Live Line Light” version. He showed a kiteboard race which uses about 80% of the graphics, but the important graphics as an example of how it could work – helicopter needed. Smart phones have the same telemetry capability of what they had on the AC boats, and the difference is 2 cm vs. 2 meters. This type of technology is going to change our world of sailing. He got permission from the USCG to use AIS to display the race zone from a shore-side antenna. All spectator boats had AIS onboard and could see where the race course was and to stay out of that zone.

GM Conclusion - I’m a geek, and listening to Stan Honey (who invented the yellow first down line for Football, the strike zone for Baseball, the telemetric bubble in NASCAR, etc., did all of the graphics for the America’s Cup in 2013 (and IMHO the world’s top sailboat navigator)), the summary above doesn’t do the presentation justice. Fast forward to where he starts talking at 22:56 – 55:19, you might skip the Q&A period because the people asking the questions aren’t miked, but some of his answers are interesting during that period. Overall, Stan is a rare genius, friendly, did a VOR and won, navigated for Roy Disney and Steve Fossett’s boats. He answers any really geeky question with such simple understandable answers.

Creating Sailing Opportunities: Diversifying Through Outreach – Lou Sandoval, Jason Thompson, Dawn Riley Video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eg6_6P-Ps4 1:10:31 Slides - http://sailingleadership.org/wp-content/uploads/presentations/SLF-2014/grow- sport/Friday/Diversifying%20thorugh%20Outreach%202.pdf

GM Summary on Video Presentation - DR – When sailing with America True, she was invited to clubs to speak, and she agreed as long as the club participated in "True Youth." The True Youth program was a 1-day event that took people from the community out for a sail. Reactions were difficult, “You’re going to bring poor kids and show them wealthy people?” She operates Oakcliff Community Sailing Center today (45 minutes outside Manhattan, NY) which has a good mix of women, African-Americans, and others. In New Zealand, “Opening Day” is coordinated between ALL yacht clubs, where every yacht club is open to the public. They offer hot dogs and keep it low key, so the general public can be introduced to sailing (sell sailing classes, crew opportunities, people who own boats but are not members can come and see, etc.). For diversity to work, we need non-white people in charge, taking leadership positions. Some organizations are considering racing sections “for women only.” She suggests that it shouldn’t be done because that is segregation, rather, reward teams who have diversity, such as top placing awards for the boats with at least 50% women. JT - LGBT consumers have a cumulative buying power of $790 Billion. Asian-Americans have a median household income of $15,334 greater than the US median household income. Latino buying power is expected to increase by 50% from 2010 – 2015 from $1 Trillion, to $1.5 Trillion. Black, Hispanic, Asian and mixed race births made up 50.4% of new arrivals to the U.S. The greatest growth in college entries in 2017 will be those in diversity 14% - 38% for each demographic group, where white entries to college expect to grow only 4%. Why is it important? “If I go to college, I become middle class. If I am middle class, I have disposable income. If I have disposable income, I buy a boat. They are qualified leads. This is the funnel for American sailing.” Grab kids at the college level, but recognize that many of color don’t know how to swim – 60% of African-Americans cannot swim. USA Swimming has a program teaching people of color swimming and sailing needs to support this. LS – National Marine Manufacturers Association has recognized that if the boating industry keeps doing what it has been doing, we will run out of people to buy boats. We know that most boat buying decisions are made by women, but boat dealers commonly focus their talk with the man. Sandoval reinforces the idea that a leader of a segment of society must lead that segment to the water. Personally he brings Hispanic friends to Chicago Yacht Club who look at the big trophies and say “I’ve never seen anything like that, what are they made of?” Sandoval knows by being the first Hispanic Chair of the Chicago-Mackinac Race he had an obligation to do well with it, for all future Hispanics and to prove that he’s no different than his predecessors (personally, I enjoyed working with him when he was Mackinac Race Chair). Rather than “reinvent the wheel,” as head

Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation19 August 2014 Lake Michigan SuRF Newsletter of the diversity committee at NMMA, they looked around to see who else has created something, see if it is working, and then copy it. They found that USA Hockey which has a lot of demographic similarities to sailing (white, appears to be expensive, etc.). USA Hockey has worked to get ice rinks built across the U.S. providing the opportunity for people to try skating and try hockey (USA Hockey story - http://www.usahockeymagazine.com/article/2013-11/equal-ice-diversity-hockey ). In the Q&A portion it was pointed out that there are some yacht clubs that are still “male only.” Being private clubs, that is their choice, however, in today’s day and age and with the changing demographics of society, it is passé. Step up, make your voices heard, especially those dads who have daughters and advocate for change. Edgewater Yacht Club in Cleveland, Ohio, developed a “domestic partner” membership to address the acceptance of the LGBT community.

GM Conclusion – Jason Thompson is the Director for Diversity Inclusion at the USOC, is an awesome professional, and nails demographics, statistics, and provides great analogies. You can’t watch him in this talk enough times, this message needs to be driven home to everyone (11:56 - 31:22). Look at what ability diversity is doing to sailing. Effort is being made, and results are coming in developing new sailors.

Lou Sandoval on Diversity, Sailing Anarchy Innerview – Alan http://vimeo.com/86122957 12:40

GM Summary on Video Presentation - Lou is part of the Recreational Leadership Council at NMMA whose focus is to grow boating. There were three people at the US Sailing Leadership Forum who weren’t white. Lou’s focus is growing diversity in sailing. In the United States today, 1 out of 4 kids in kindergarten is Hispanic. That means in ten years, if we keep ignoring this and not getting these kids on the water, we are going to miss out on incredible growth opportunity. These kids are looking at other sports that are growing the non-white segment, pointing to hockey who built rinks across the entire country as far south as Florida and has tons of new people playing. But it was done with a plan. Part of the challenge to the sport of Sailing is to bring pioneers. Who will be the first? It is not easy to be the first, and then, drawing in more of the same group. Find more at www.NMMA.org . Note - This interview was made at the US Sailing Leadership Conference.

GM Conclusion – Sandoval is driven to figure out how to diversify sailing. Without it, his business doesn’t prosper, and frankly, neither will clubs, marinas, shipyards, chandleries, sailmakers, builders or any other part of sailing. It is time to open the doors wide open, treat all with respect. But the question is how to bring in more people, period? Keep an eye on this, and when their plan rolls out, let’s jump on it.

2014 KASZUBE CUP REGATTA by Cookie Mueller The South Shore Yacht Club Junior Sailing Foundation sponsored their 31 st Annual Kaszube Cup Junior Sailing Regatta July 7th - July 9th at South Shore Yacht Club, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

South Shore Yacht Club hosted 124 racers from 12 yacht clubs from Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan during the regatta. The racers enjoyed two days of racing in a variety of conditions on Lake Michigan. The 49 Optimist dinghies raced inside the breakwall and the 33 420’s and 9 Lasers raced outside of the breakwall. For many of the racers it was their first experience racing on Lake Michigan.

Tuesday, July 8th saw heavy winds of about 15 mph with gusts to 20 mph. The seas were 1 to 2 feet. Wednesday, July 9th saw better racing conditions with winds about 10-12 mph and calmer seas. A cold Lake Michigan, 58 degrees, made for quick turtles and capsizes during racing. Four of the scheduled 8 races were completed.

The Sportsmanship Awards – donated by Neilson Sailmakers of Racine were won by: Abigail Shanley- Roberts from Waukegan Yacht Club and Trista Hess from Milwaukee Yacht Club.

Thanks to all of the South Shore Yacht Club members that helped to make the 2014 Kaszube Cup a success. Members generously donated food, housing and door prizes for the regatta. Thirty five (35) members volunteered to work race committee on the two race courses. This included race committee, safety boats and spectator boats. Twenty-two (22) SSYC volunteers and 13 Juniors volunteered to coordinate the meal program for the regatta. This included preparing and serving six meals during the three day event. A special thanks to Chef Sam for coordinating the cookout.

SCOUTS SAIL WITH WINTHROP HARBOR YACHT CLUB by Kristal Jones On Friday, July 11, 2014, sailors from Winthrop Harbor Yacht Club and North Point Sail Racing Association took 11 Scouts and their Advisors visiting the area out for an evening sail in the Lake off of North Point Marina. The name of the Scout’s organization was Venturing Crew 2783 from St. Louis, Missouri. This group were co-ed youth from 11 through 21 years old. They spent earlier days touring the area and were next headed to Chicago on a zero budget.

Earlier on Friday they had sailed small out of Lakeland Academy so the time they spent on our larger boats gave them a chance to compare and contrast the same maneuvers. After a safety briefing, the Scouts were taught and performed the basic tasks of securing a dock line, raising the sail, tacking and gybing. In the 60 to 90 minute sail, all Scouts had a chance to experience being at the helm and controlling the sheets. We enjoyed their visit and hope they will come back again.

Special thanks to: Sean Sullivan (member of NPSRA & WSPS) skippering a Hunter 33, Windo ; Stephany Siwinski skippering a Hunter 340, Wawas' Roost; Karl Lahm skippering a Jeanneau 40, Voyager; Greg Gutirrez, skippering a Hunter 33; and Betti Garcia, Seaby Bess and Mike Stroz for coordinating the event.

SHERIDAN SHORE SAILING SCHOOL ACCREDITED BY US SAILING by Zac Hernandez Sheridan Shore Sailing School is proud to announce our accreditation as a US Sailing Community Sailing Center. Organizations that are recognized enjoy increased visibility as the best facilities in the country. With over 1,400 identified sailing programs in the US Sailing database, the Community Sailing Center Sanctioning Plan seeks to identify those programs who, in the eyes of US Sailing, are offering the highest level of education and public access. As of this year, there are only 26 accredited US Sailing Community Sailing Centers in the United States. Even more impressive, Sheridan Shore Sailing School is one of four in the Midwest, and one of only two in Illinois. During the course of US Sailing’s evaluation, Sheridan Shore Sailing School met or exceeded all the required standards and had an impressive commitment to high quality public access sailing. Distinguishing factors included our educational opportunities and outstanding resources. Along with the accreditation, Sheridan Shore Sailing School is now part of a large network that provides numerous opportunities and benefits.

Programs of all types are eligible, provided they meet the specific guidelines set forth by the Community Sailing Council. Additionally, the goal of the US Community Sailing Center network is to help formalize the level of instruction throughout the United States. As one of these programs, we use boats that meet high safety requirements to teach the national standards set in place by US Sailing. Ultimately, this network of US Community Sailing Centers will allow students to experience the same level of education across the country. The hope is that the individuality, and successes, of each organization will be recognized as part of the best Community Sailing Network in the Country. For more information on US Sailing Community Sailing Centers, you may visit their website at http://www.ussailing.org/education/learn-to-sail/training- centers/community-sailing-center .

2014 Chicago Match Race Center Summer Invitational Doubleheader B Chicago Match Race Center, Chicago, Illinois July 26-27, 2014

Maximillian Soh and his Team Red Dot crew of Justin Wong, Russell Kan, and Andrew Chan from Singapore won back to back Grade Three events at the Chicago Match Race Center's Summer Invitational Doubleheader. Chicago Match Race Center member Steven Lowery from Highland Park, Illinois, was the runner up in the 12-team event this weekend and also finished second in the overall double-header. After a fitful first day of racing in a weak southwest breeze, Chicago Match Race Center founder Don Wilson prevailed with a perfect 4-0 record, tying him with Soh. The dying breeze eventually caved in completely, yielding only six and a half flights with two matches abandoned on the first day of the event. Lowery finished the day with a 3-1 record, as did Magnus Sandberg from Canada. A new day today brought wind and skies that looked more promising, starting out sunny with a perfect 8-10 knot breeze from the west-northwest. By Noon the wind had picked up to a consistent 20 knots with gusts pushing to over 30, forcing race managers to impose a no-spinnaker restriction for the day's remaining flights.

The ideal conditions in the morning produced tight racing, with lots of luffs on the downwind legs as leaders tried to defend their positions, trailing teams brought fresh breeze down the track. As conditions became more tumultuous, the more experienced teams prevailed, with Soh, Lowery and Wilson rising to the top ranks in the standings, with the lowest-ranked underdog, Clinton Hayes from San Francisco, managing to stay ahead of the rest of the pack on an impressive 8-3 record. Despite Sunday's strong breeze, the long postponement Saturday prevented more racing beyond the Round Robin, so no knockout stage could be sailed and the standings form the Round Robin became the final results. Soh's achievement earned him invitations to both the Chicago Grand Slam, first event on the four-event ISAF Grade 2 US Grand Slam series, and the last event of this series, the Oakcliff International Grade 2 event in Oyster Bay, New York. 1. 2014 100 Miler M&M Yacht Club, Marinette, Wisconsin July 26, 2014 The 78 th Annual 100 Miler was a scenic run from Menominee across the Bay of Green Bay to the Door County shores and back. Both classes were challenged by the rocky shoals of the Strawberry Channel and were treated to views of Eagle Bluff Light. Yachts that flew spinnakers enjoyed an extra 6 miles, making their way around Green Island and Horseshoe Island at various points of sail. Sailing conditions were steady 15-25 out of the South, with boats in both Divisions finishing quickly for the second year in a row. The parties were great - Friday night, lots of people attended the Gosling's Rum party; we had entertainment by local bands and a phenomenal cookout by Mad Dog and Merrill (a regional BBQ duo with their own TV chef show). —Brian Chaltry Pos Boat Skipper Type Elapsed Corrected Overall PHRF Spin 1 1. 2014 Chicago Match Race Center Summer Invitational Doubleheader A Chicago Match Race Center, Chicago, Illinois July 25-26, 2014 After an ambitious program of 12 flights in the Round Robin, followed by Quarter Finals, Semi-Finals and Finals in only two days of racing, Singapore's Maxi Soh and his team of Justin Wong, Russell Kan, and Andrew Chan emerged as the winners of the 2014 Chicago Match Race Center Summer Invitational Doubleheader A event, the first of two back-to-back ISAF Grade 3 events. The race committee led by Darcy Cook managed to complete the full 12 flight Round Robin for the ten competing teams on Saturday with a strong NE breeze and huge sea state testing each team's boat handling skills and match racing tactics. Soh led the event from start to finish, winning all 9 of his matches in the round robin and then beat Chicago local and Chicago Match Race Center member Steve Lowery in the Finals. Chicago Match Race Center founder and top ranked skipper in the event Don Wilson finished 3rd. Day two saw a shift in weather conditions with a light south-westerly breeze greeting the 8 Quarter Finalists. After topping the Round Robin, Maxi Soh chose David Niemann from Madison, WI and had a hard fought quarter finals, coming from 0-1 down to win and advance to the semi-finals 2-1. Steve Lowery, who finished 2nd in the Round Robin, chose Chicago Match Race Center Intern and the youngest competitor in the regatta Will Holz, dispatching him in two straight matches to advance to the Semi's. Don Wilson then had the final choice for his Quarter Finals opponent, and selected Magnus Sandberg from Toronto, Canada. The Canadian, who was coming off a runner-up finish in last month's Grade Three Great Lakes International Match Race regatta put up a good fight but was no match for Wilson and his Convexity Racing team who took the Quarter Finals 2-0. The final Quarter Final match pitted the competitions oldest sailor, David Storrs who will turn 74 this year against Clinton Hayes who is currently working as the assistant coach for the Stanford Sailing Team. Storrs, who is aiming to become the top ranked match racer in the US came away with the final berth in the Semi Finals, beating Hayes 2-0. Soh then chose to race David Storrs for the Semi-finals, leaving the two Chicago local rivals to battle it out in the other Semi-final match. The scorecard for both Semi-finals depicted the intensity of the racing with both matches having several lead changes, luffing matches and penalty flags flying from the umpire boats. In the Soh - Storrs Semi-final, the young Singapore team, ranked 32nd in the world, came away with a 2-0 victory to be the first team to advance to the Finals. In the local derby between Wilson & Lowery, a late surge from Lowery helped him advance to the Finals 2-1. In a strong, puffy and shifty south-westerly breeze, which peaked at 26 knots on the race course, both the Petit Final and Finals needed all their matches to find a winner. In an epic display of boat handling and match racing skills, the team that travelled the furthest came away with the regatta victory. Soh overcame a slight mistake in his Finals against Lowery to win the Chicago Match Race Center Doubleheader A event. In the Petit Final, Wilson also staged a come from behind victory to sneak onto the podium in 3rd, leaving David Storrs in 4th. The overall Doubleheader Regatta winner was awarded invitations to both the upcoming Chicago and Oakcliff Grade 2 events which are part of the 2014 Grand Slam Series. 1. Maximillian Soh SIN 13-0 2. 2014 J/111 National Championship Little Traverse Yacht Club, Harbor Springs, Michigan July 24-27, 2014 Thirteen J/111 boats attended the event in beautiful Northern Michigan ready to race. Blue skies, clear water and perfect breeze kicked off the regatta on Thursday as the sailors competed in three races. The last race of the firsst day saw several of the top teams start to dominate. Day Two had a slow start, but as the afternoon breeze filled in, the race committee was able to run 3 more races. For the final race of the day, local host Dave Irish showed everyone the way home to his boatyard, winning the last race and providing lots of free beer and wine afterwards! As he should, right? Saturday, the J/111 sailors participated in the “Tour of the Bay” race. After the wind filled in around 2pm, heavy breeze and large waves sent the sailors on a fun ride around the course. What everyone knows about this race is that when the wind fills in, sailing in the middle of the bay is a bit like sailing into a “black hole”. In fact, the faster you sail the “edges” (e.g. the coastline) of the bay the better you do. The last day of racing was threatened with storms in the vicinity but the Race Committee was able to get two races off as the storms stayed off the course. At the end of the Championship, Wind Czar, No Surprise and Kashmir took the first, second, and third, respectively. While Wind Czar closed the regatta with a 3-1 to win the event in a somewhat convincing fashion, the balance of the top five was nowhere near a “closed and done” deal. In fact, how everyone did on the last leg of the last race determined the ultimate fate for all four teams that were in contention. Now that some of the visiting teams to that crazy bay in Harbor Springs had learned a few tricks or two, the gloves were off for the final two races. In the aftermath of some great, incredibly close racing, many teams were discussing next steps for J/111 one-design racing. Included in that evolution were plans for Key West Race Week in 2015 and the J/111 Worlds for

2015 in Newport, Rhode Island. Furthermore, various formats were also considered, like just W-L courses or a mix of W-L and an “offshore random leg” course. In the theme of “horses for courses,” it was clear that more offshore-oriented teams liked having the offshore experience combined into the modern W-L mix. Time will tell. 1. Club 420 North American Championship Brant Beach Yacht Club, Brant Beach, New Jersey July 21–24, 2014 The 2014 C420 North Americans finished in beautiful Long Beach Island, New Jersey. On the final day, the fleet left the beach under cloudy skies and a dying northerly breeze. Race 1 started in 8kts and finished in 3 kts. The racing was challenging for sure. After that the conditions really fell apart and it was clear that no more consistent breeze was on the horizon. The Race Committee called the regatta after just that one race but thirteen for the whole series. Martina Sly and Ian Morgan, of Annapolis Yacht Club and Coral Reef Yacht Club, are our 2014 North American champions. They sailed an amazingly consistent regatta with all the scores in the top 10. After racing both Martina and Ian were overjoyed with the regatta, “The regatta was so much fun with all the different conditions, it really challenged you,” Ian Morgan commented. Martina Sly talked a little bit about the keys to the regatta, “Our boat speed was really good in all conditions, we really focused on keeping the boat flat and avoiding the windward heel in the choppy conditions. The key was to be consistent and stay in the top group, we sailed in pressure and sailed high on reaches to keep our air clear and our boat moving.” The Brant Beach Yacht Club and its army of volunteers were on every detail and made the event a huge success. “We love coming here,” said Class president John Morgan. "BBYC is known for their great hospitality and excellent Race management and both were in excellent form at this year's North Americans." Pictures and interviews are being posted on the Club 420 Association Facebook page. For final results visit: http://www.bbycnj.com/Results/show.php?rgtID=198 Gold Division, 58 Boats 1. 2014 Hook Race Racine Yacht Club, Racine, Wisconsin July 19, 2014 Holy Hook Race, what a ride it was this year! There was a steady breeze out of the south the whole race and wouldn’t you know it, everyone got in to Menominee, Michigan before sunrise on Monday morning. This ultimately led to a good time had by all. The best part was the surprise overall win by Jim and David Strouf on the good ol’ Wind Lassie (still for sale if you are looking for a champion steed!). As Commodore Ed Montano put it, “I knew our shot at winning overall was dead when Jim called me at 10pm to ask us where we were. I mean come on, we had only gotten in at 5pm ourselves, I was pretty shocked that Jim was only 5 hours behind. He really crushed it!” And crushed it the Strouf boys did! Wife Deb Strouf was proud and happy when she arrived to help Jim take the boat back to Kenosha. I heard he promised to buy her new pillows as a memento of the occasion. This was a very special Hook Race for Doug Vacarello, who also had a great finish. It was his 25th Hook! He had a great crew consisting of family and friends and

Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation30 August 2014 Lake Michigan SuRF Newsletter it was really fun to see everyone from Kenosha having such a good time during the party and awards ceremony. 2014 Race to Mackinac Chicago Yacht Club, Chicago, Illinois July 19, 2014 Jerry and Greg Miarecki pulled a hat trick in the 106th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac. The father and son team have won their third consecutive Race to Mackinac on Providence. This year, they won the Chicago-Mackinac Trophy Division with a corrected time of 41:35:28. "We’re very honored and humbled to be a part of such an enduring tradition," said Greg Miarecki, who currently serves as Vice Commodore of the Chicago Yacht Club. "Thanks to the Mac Committee and the Race Committee for their tremendous work. I’d also like to thank everyone on the Providence crew. All of them are great friends and excellent sailors." Miarecki said that in many ways, this year’s race was similar to 2013 — except for the fact that they finished approximately 24 hours faster than the 105th Race. "Both years, the weather was very pleasant, and there was no threat of rain or thunderstorms. We had to make decisions about whether to go west or east. And in both years, the choice to go west was correct. We’re happy to be here almost an entire day earlier than last year. Everyone, including the sailors, the Race Committee, and the folks on Mackinac Island, likes a faster race. This was a great year." Cynthia, owned by Andrew Grootendorst and James B. DeVries, with a corrected time of 42:23:55, and Viper, owned by F. William Laslow, with a corrected time of 42:59:43, rounded out the top three in the Chicago-Mackinac Trophy division. In the Mackinac Cup Division, To the Moon, owned by Robert Berg, won with a corrected time of 42:11:45. To the Moon is a Swan 42 with an 11-person crew representing the New York Yacht Club. Richard Clarke, navigator of To the Moon commented: "We’re obviously very excited as crew to win the Chicago Mac race. We had a good game plan before the start, and we stuck to our game plan. It was a little different than the rest of the fleet. When the lights came on Sunday morning and there were no boats

Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation31 August 2014 Lake Michigan SuRF Newsletter around us, we were a little nervous. But when the Santa Cruz 70s were the first ones we could see, we knew we were up there with the big boats. The crew did a great job. We were pretty exhilarated and shattered when it was all said and done." Bob Berg, skipper of To the Moon, said his daughter, Katie, who is on the women’s sailing team at the University of South Florida, came up with the idea to do the Mac last summer. "It was the first event that my daughter Katie and I did," Berg said. "It was her idea. We had and extraordinary team and extraordinary efforts by the crew, and it all worked out. It was tremendous to do it with my daughter." Berg said that although they haven’t talked about it in detail yet, there’s a high chance that they’ll be back to do the Mac next year. No Surprise, owned by David Irish, was second in the Cup Division with a corrected time of 42:46:36, followed by Aftershock, owned by William M. Newman, at 42:58:37 corrected time. Race Chairman Matt Gallagher was ecstatic with the 106th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac. "Each year, the Mac is determined by the weather, the wind, talent, and spirit of all crews participating," said Gallagher. "The competition and camaraderie bring sailors back year after year, and I’m certain that this year will hold special memories for all who were involved. Congratulations to all racers for a successful and safe race. We’ll see you in July 2015." The 106th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac is a 333-mile invitation-only race from Chicago Yacht Club to Mackinac Island. This year, 317 boats and approximately 2,500 crew participated. 2014 Bayview Mackinac Race Bayview Yacht Club, Detroit, Michigan July 12, 2014 At 10:30 Monday night (July 14), the last of 227 boats competing in the Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race crossed the finish line. The venerable distance race, in its 90th edition, had begun at 11:30 Saturday morning (July 12) on southern Lake Huron with consecutive starts for the fleet’s 14 classes. A westerly breeze of 9-11 knots allowed an initially mellow downwind spinnaker run to the first turning points in each of two courses -- the “Acura Shore Course," covering 204 nautical miles (235 statute miles), and the longer "Quantum Sails Cove Island Course," covering 259 nautical miles (298 statute miles). During the evening, however, “a lot of everything” happened when it came to weather and wind, including rain, dense fog and gusts up to 36 knots (the latter reported by Ann Arbor’s Bill Martin, owner of the 70-footer Stripes ). Winning overall honors for Division I/Cove Island Course (J.L. Hudson Trophy) was Phil and Sharon O’Niel’s TransPac 52 Natalie J . Although Doug and Dick Devos’ (Macatawa, Mich.) 86-foot Windquest crossed the finish line before all others at approximately 5:30 p.m. Sunday (July 13), the team wound up fourth overall on corrected time in Division I. The Division II/Shore Course Racing overall victory went to Win Cooper/Chris Benedict’s (Flint, Mich.) Santana 35 Shape , while Division III Shore Course Cruising was won by defending champion Wick Smith (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) in his Beneteau 42 Mostly Harmless . For those who didn’t win overall silver, victories in 17 classes (four for Cove Island, 13 for Shore) were just as cherished. Division IV Shore Course Double-handed class was won by Chris Cyrul’s (Hixson, Tenn.) Opus Dei , and the Division V Cove Island Multihull class was won by Fred Ball’s (Harbor Springs, Mich.) Lucky Strike . “The scenario was that if you got north very quickly you had more wind in the northern part of the lake,” said Ryan Breymeier, who crewed on Rick Warner’s multihull Cheeky (second place in multihull class). “If you got north a bit later, the wind was starting to die. When we got there, we still had decent breeze, but nothing like Windquest and Natalie J had. Also, since they have much taller masts, they had more wind up high that we didn’t have. The speed differential at the start was incredible, because they were sailing with wind up high and nobody else had it. We never saw more than 20-22 knots, but that’s plenty for this boat.” COVE ISLAND COURSE DIVISION Boat City, State Finish Elapsed Corrected Overall PHRF A Class 2 2 Evolution Kohler/Reichelsdorfer Sheboygan, WI Sun - 21:49:51 32:09:51 43:22:30

2014 Solo Mackinac Challenges Great Lakes Singlehanded Society June 21, 2014 The 2014 Solo Mackinac Challenges started June 21, 2014. The Lake Michigan challenge had 29 entries with 28 starters, 6 of them new entrants. In addition to the above there were 5 boats entered into the Super Macs and Back. There were 2 finishers, Yanqui from Chicago and Euphoria from Port Huron. --Mark Gannon, Race Director (Ed. note: The Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation has concern over solo racing as it is physically impossible for a person to maintain watch as required by the COLREGS and Racing Rules of Sailing beyond 24 hours.)
