INTRODUCING THE RADIAL Z-ONE

The Z-ONE is the sail MC sailors were waiting for!

A radial design made out of hard cloth in the body of the sail which allows it to better hold its shape for ultimate durability. The Z-ONE was used to win the 2012 Midwinters and through (262) 275-9728 continuous testings during the summer we are proud to Harry Melges [email protected] Andy Burdick [email protected] announce our next FAST MC sail for the 2013 season. We asked each of them to tell us of their progress in early 2013. You can support Team (Annie) Haeger / Provancha in their 470 Class Olympic bid, or the Bowers Sailing Olympic Class bid, or the (Roble) Epic Racing team with a secure, on- line donation through the ILYA under the Association drop down menu (http://ilya.org/donations/support.html). Team Haeger/Provancha (Annie Haeger/Briana Provancha) Team Haeger/Provancha achieved much success during our first trip to this spring. Competing in three regattas in Spain and France, we were able to put up three top-fives on the board, medaling at the Princess Sofia Trophy in Palma de Mallorca, Spain! During Spring Cup, a training regatta in Cap D’Adge France, we had the opportunity to sail against 470 men as the fleet was mixed. Testing our boat speed against the boys revealed how much progress we still have to make especially in big breeze. After five days of racing, we finished top female boat and ended up fifth place overall. The final regatta took place in Hyeres, France, a venue known for its cold weather and gnarly breeze. While we were there, we were fortunate enough to avoid both! We fought After the success we have achieved on the ISAF World our way through the entire regatta and had a shot at the bronze Cup circuit, we are looking forward to the next leg of our going into the medal races, where the points are doubled and journey and to build on our experiences thus far. Roble and Shea campaigned in women’s match racing for the 2012 Olympics. Despite not qualifying, the duo has continued to pursue their love for the fast paced and tactical game by establishing a team that can compete on the Women’s International Match Racing Series (WIMRS) as well as open match racing regattas. Okauchee Lake Yacht Club is proud to be hosting this prestigious event and building on the tradition of excellence established by Pistakee Yacht Club dating back to 1960. The primary goal of the OLYC regatta committee (chaired by Kurt Prange) is to invite the top sailors from the fleet, and field the strongest roster possible, thereby creating a must-attend event. Many of the long-standing Blue Chip traditions will remain in place, and new ones will likely be developed. There will be more information and details available in the coming months, but for now mark your calendar for this Nagawicka Lake Y. C. championship event. Vincent Porter, Champion of the Year Edmund Pillsbury Cup UK SAILMAKERS: THE NEW CHOICE FOR SPEED

Over the fall and winter UK Sailmakers Chicago has spent many hours on and off the water developing our new C-Scow shapes. We built full scale test sails and spent a good deal of time on the water testing our shapes. The fi rst sail we built won its fi rst two regattas and one crew member was impressed enough that he purchased the sail for his own boat. Our dedication and commit- ment was truly demon- strated when we went sail testing after three inches of snowfall early this spring.

Feedback this spring has been extremely positive “higher and faster in light air,” “more power out of the tacks,” “wider range,” “more adjustable,” and “ smoother corners” are a few we have received so far.

Initiated in 2012 by Regatta Chairman Richard Beers of Delavan Lake Yacht Club and his enthusiastic commit- tee, a new tradition in the Class X Championship Regatta has been established. Beers was able to convince all 17 ILYA member clubs with X Boat fleets to produce a square for an ILYA X Boat fleet quilt. The efforts of each participating lake resulted in this magnificent quilt won in 2012 by Lake Beulah. Beulah will return the quilt to Oshkosh—the host of the 2013 X champs next July. According to the deed of gift, two weeks prior to each annual regatta, the quilt will be delivered from the current ILYA Club of Record to the next ILYA X Inland Host Club for a repeat of the annual cycle. Regatta attendees are able to bid for the quilt in the name of their club. Proceeds of the bid process go to defray the cost of the host regatta. The announcement of the winning club will be made at the trophy presentation following the completion of the regatta. SPRING / SUMMER 2013 SCOW SLANTS PAGE 47 ILYA’s newest Member Yacht Club... 420 fleet opts for dip start, other youth fleets make it an option, adult fleets say ‘no’ Originally proposed by the ILYA Club 420 Class, the Should the race committee choose to go to the “Z” flag option of using Code Flag “P” as the preparatory signal for start after one or more attempts with code “P”, the ILYA ILYA classes was discussed by all the fleets. Code Flag “P” sailing instructions indicate that the round-the-ends rule will allows for what is known as a ‘dip start.’ Yachts which are apply to re-starters, even thought the I flag will not be flown over the line at the start can simply dip back behind the line with “Z”. This is the traditional procedure that ILYA has to restart. followed in the past. After the Winter Inland fleet meet- ings, the adult fleets all reported to the Board of Directors that they would prefer to stay with the ILYA’s traditional Code “I” flag starting procedure, which requires a premature starter to round an end of the line before restarting— the old ‘round the ends’ rule. Club 420 Race Committee teams are instructed to use Code “P” in all initial starts. Class X and Opti leaders decided to make the dip start an option of the Race Committee, to be used as appropriate depending on the number of entrants and other considerations. This will include the No Tears and Green fleet events in the Opti Class. MELG1277 - Melges MC Scow Ad [SS]:MELGES USA 5/16/13 10:15 AM Page 1
