    h i s t o r y America’s Cup & J-Class The tradition of America’s Cup races began in 1851 when the schooner America defeated 15 British yachts to win the Round the Island Race in Cowes. Between then and the Second World War, races for the America’s Cup were held on 16 occasions. Leading businessmen such as Sir Thomas Lipton, Thomas Sopwith and Harold S. Vanderbilt went to extremes and spent huge sums of money in order to try and win the ornate trophy known affectionately as the Old Mug. Those who succeeded took on the role of defender, waiting until the other J-Classers determined who would be the next challenger. Due to the high stakes and immense public interest the fight was not always fair, and many protests had to be evaluated by the New York Yacht Club. In these days the America’s Cup remained a battle between J-Class yachts competed for the America’s Cup in 1930, Rainbow, Endeavour, Ranger, American and British yachts. After the Universal Rule was 1934 and 1937. Although the America’s Cup recommenced Endeavour II and Yankee compete established in 1930 the participants were J-Class yachts in the 1950s, the heyday of the J-Class was over and it in the 1937 preliminary race with a waterline length from 75 to 87 feet and a draught of would be more than a half a century before they raced up to 15 feet.     Bibliography The bibliography includes publication data for every work cited in the source notes of the articles. It should be noted that while there are more than a thousand titles listed, this bibliography can by no means be considered exhaustive. Taken together, the literature on the Titanic, Bounty, and Columbus’s Niña, Pinta, and Santa María comprises hundreds of books and articles. Even a comprehensive listing of nautical bibliographies is impossible here, though four have been especially helpful in researching this book: Bridges, R.C., and P. E. H. Hair. On the point ahead, as the Spray stood out of the cove, was a lively picture, for the front of a tall factory was a flutter of hand- kerchiefs and caps. Pretty faces peered out of the windows from the top to the bottom of the building, all smiling bon voyage. Some hailed me to know where away and why alone. Why? When I made as if to stand in, a hundred pairs of arms reached out, and said come, but the shore was dangerous! The sloop worked out of the bay against a light southwest wind, and about noon squared away off Eastern Point, receiving at the same time a hearty salute—the last of many kindnesses to her at Gloucester. The wind freshened off the point, and skipping along smoothly, the Spray was soon off Thatcher’s Island lights.     A (NOT SO) BRIEF HISTORY OF LUNAR DISTANCES: LUNAR LONGITUDE DETERMINATION AT SEA BEFORE THE CHRONOMETER Richard de Grijs Department of Physics and Astronomy, Macquarie University, Balaclava Road, Sydney, NSW 2109, Australia Email: [email protected] Abstract: Longitude determination at sea gained increasing commercial importance in the late Middle Ages, spawned by a commensurate increase in long-distance merchant shipping activity. Prior to the successful development of an accurate marine timepiece in the late-eighteenth century, marine navigators relied predominantly on the Moon for their time and longitude determinations. Lunar eclipses had been used for relative position determinations since Antiquity, but their rare occurrences precludes their routine use as reliable way markers. Measuring lunar distances, using the projected positions on the sky of the Moon and bright reference objects—the Sun or one or more bright stars—became the method of choice. It gained in profile and importance through the British Board of Longitude’s endorsement in 1765 of the establishment of a Nautical Almanac. Numerous ‘projectors’ jumped onto the bandwagon, leading to a proliferation of lunar ephemeris tables. Chronometers became both more affordable and more commonplace by the mid-nineteenth century, signaling the beginning of the end for the lunar distance method as a means to determine one’s longitude at sea.
