Lake Michigan Surf Newsletter the E-Publication of the Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation
Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation December 2012 Issue 12 Lake Michigan SuRF Newsletter LMSRF IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE ... A NEW WEB SITE by Glenn T. McCarthy, Commodore www.lmsrf.org LMSRF's web page for the past ten years was the organization's second generation web site and had grown very long in the tooth. Chuck Goes, whom some of you know from Belmont Yacht Club or from his Race Committee work, volunteered to help LMSRF build a new web site. Chuck’s day job is web hosting and design, along with computer consulting, at his company, Digital Interplay (contact Chuck at [email protected] or at 773.743.9843 if you are in need of help for your own business). We chose the platform of Joomla!, as this web site software allows our volunteers to make changes anywhere, anytime, without needing anything more than an internet connection. Users don’t need any special software to make updates and changes. The goals of the new web site are simple, to make it easier to navigate (check), make it easier to maintain by assigning committee chairs the pages they are responsible for maintaining (check, check), add a bit of fun with links to Maritime Museums and Lighthouses (check), but most importantly to make it easier for you to get what you need (big check). Examples of this last one are that you will find applications for Grants-In-Aid and the Hall of Fame on the web site, along with the requirements of both programs. With over 60 pages of information, we hope you find it informative, helpful and will help your club and/or foster your own sailing. -

CCA GAM Issue 16 the Newsletter of the Cruising Club of America Spring 2011 Awards Dinner at New York Yacht Club Blue Water Medal
CCA GAM Issue 16 The Newsletter of the Cruising Club of America Spring 2011 Awards Dinner at New York Yacht Club Blue Water Medal Blue Water Medal To reward an example of meritorious seamanship and adventure upon the sea, displayed by an amateur selected from all national ities, that might otherwise go unrecognized. The prestigious 2010 Blue Water Medal has been awarded to Australian Alex Whitworth Alex Alex Whitworth for a circumnavigation of the world via the Northwest Passage West to East. The first Blue Water Medal was awarded in 1923 and it is given “for a most meritorious example of seamanship, the recipient to be selected from among the amateurs of all the nations.” The award was presented on March 4, 2011 by CCA Commodore Sheila McCurdy during the Annual Awards Dinner at the New York Yacht Club. Whitworth was born in an air raid shelter on the island of Malta in 1942 and spent most of his childhood near Manchester, England, or wherever his father was stationed at the time. His father, Alexander Whitworth, a Royal Navy pilot, taught him to sail at a young age. At nineteen, Whitworth also joined the Royal Navy and became an Observer on carrier-based Sea Vixen aircraft until 1965. In 1966, Whitworth emigrated to Australia and joined Adastra Aerial Surveys where he worked both full and part time until 1975. In 1974, he received a B.A. (Honors) in Political Science from Melbourne University and in 1982 an M.B.A. from the University of New South Wales. In 1993, Whitworth and his partner Hilary Yerbury purchased the sailboat Berrimilla, a Brolga 33 designed by Australian Peter Joubert. -
Luxury Yacht Interiors, 1870-1920 As a Reflection of Gilded Age Social Status
Luxury Yacht Interiors, 1870-1920 as a Reflection of Gilded Age Social Status Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By M. Lynn Barnes, M.A. Graduate Program in Textiles and Clothing The Ohio State University 2010 Dissertation Committee: Professor Patricia A. Cunningham, Adviser Professor David Steigerwald Professor Susie Zavotka Copyright by M. Lynn Barnes, M.A. 2010 Abstract This dissertation is based on six leading families in the United States, their mansions and their yachts. They experienced status through consumption of luxury goods, especially in decorating their homes. The thesis of this study is that it appears that yacht owners borrowed interior design ideas of their homes to decorate the interiors of their yachts. Their purpose was to enhance and maintain a presentation of status while at sea. It is assumed that yacht interiors from 1870 to 1920 were an extension of house interiors, reflecting the owner’s status, specifically in the use of textiles. The luxury yachts were extravagant symbols of the wealth, taste, and social power of their owners and were paraded as a statement of social status. The consumption of luxury products and an overt demonstration of leisure were part of the lifestyle that Gilded Age industrials and financiers strove to obtain. Luxury yachts were used as a tool, either through sport, cruising or extravagant entertaining, to promote the apparent well-being of the family. The three eras of yachting during the Gilded Age were: schooner-yachts, auxiliary-yachts and steamer yachts.
