FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 617-413-6521 September 15, 2020 Agolden@Rushtongregory.Com Andrew Golden Rushton Gregory Communications FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 617-413-6521 September 15, 2020 [email protected] NINE LEGENDS INDUCTED INTO THE NATIONAL SAILING HALL OF FAME DURING 10th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION Newport, R.I. – The National Sailing Hall of Fame (NSHOF) announced today that on Saturday, September 12th, it celebrated its 10th annual induction in a virtual format. While COVID-19 prevented everyone from gathering in person, the virtual platform allowed friends, family and a host of Hall of Famers and VIPs to join from across the country – and the world. Nine individuals were honored during the event: James E. Buttersworth (1817 – 1894, London, United Kingdom), Gordon “Sandy” Douglass (October 22, 1904 - February 12, 1992, Newark, New Jersey.), William K. Mattison (August 10, 1928, Elkins, West Virginia), Robert B. Haines, Jr. (March 27, 1954, San Diego, California), David B. Perry (April 18, 1954, Southport, Connecticut), John P. Rousmaniere (March 10, 1944, Louisville, Kentucky), Henry “Hoyle” and Diane Schweitzer (April 8, 1933 & December 28, 1935, Los Angeles & San Jose, California) and Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient Briggs S. Cunningham, Jr. (January 19, 1907 - July 2, 2003, West Palm Beach, Florida). “These sailors reflect the breadth of sailing in our country, embody the commitment to excellence that few possess and provide inspiration for generations of sailors to come. Their achievements span three categories – sailing, technical and contributor – and encompass a broad spectrum of accomplishments, from historic accounts to iconic paintings, from ice bating to windsurfing, and from coaching to safety and rules,” said Gus Carlson, president, NSHOF. Mr. Carlson added, “In these challenging times we were delighted by the response to our virtual induction ceremony. Hall of Famers, sponsors and guests rose to the occasion to make this year’s induction very memorable one for our sailing heroes.” Hall of Famers Vince Brun (2018), Peter Harken (2014), Stan Honey (2012), Bob Johnstone (2016), Tom Whidden (2017) introduced their peers and welcomed them to the Hall as part of the celebration. Joining from home were fellow inductees Betsy Alison (2011), Bill Bentsen (2017), Malin Burnham (2016), Steve Colgate (2015) and JJ Fetter (2015). Heartfelt messages of stories were shared and the accomplishments of the new inductees lauded. Also providing introductory and congratulatory remarks were Rhode Island Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, U.S. Sailing President Cory Sertl, Mystic Seaport Museum President and CEO Steve White, Herreshoff Marine Museum Founder Halsey Herreshoff and Thistle Class President Thomas Hubbell. -more- NINE LEGENDS INDUCTED INTO THE NATIONAL SAILING HALL OF FAME DURING 10th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION PAGE 2 In their acceptances, the inductees and their representatives shared thoughtful comments and a glimpse into just how connected the sailing community is – many noting how their own achievements were built on the shoulders of those who came before them. 2011 Hall of Fame inductee and NSHOF board member, Gary Jobson moderated a live interview with three of the new inductees – Robbie Haines, Dave Perry and John Rousmaniere. Prompted by Jobson, the group recounted their career highlights, the fellow inductee who inspired them and discussed the future of the sport in North America. Jobson, and earlier Carlson, paid homage to Class of 2014 inductee Harry Anderson as well as long-time board member Dayton Carr who both passed away earlier this year. A moment of silence was shared to honor the memory of the men who were both friends and supporters of sailors and sailing everywhere. The Class of 2020 will be celebrated again in Newport the weekend of September 10th, 2021 alongside the Class of 2021 for the traditional in person induction event weekend. Nominations to the National Sailing Hall of Fame are made by the sailing community. All are encouraged to nominate those who have made a significant impact on sailing in the United States at a national and/or international level. Nominations are accepted year-round. Details and the online nomination form can be found at nshof.org/nominations. -30- About the National Sailing Hall of Fame: The National Sailing Hall of Fame, located in Newport, Rhode Island, USA is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history of sailing and its impact on American culture; honoring those who have made outstanding contributions to the sport; demonstrating its value as a hands-on tool for scholastic and life skills learning; and inspiring and encouraging sailing development and participation. Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation December 2012 Issue 12 Lake Michigan SuRF Newsletter LMSRF IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE ... A NEW WEB SITE by Glenn T. McCarthy, Commodore www.lmsrf.org LMSRF's web page for the past ten years was the organization's second generation web site and had grown very long in the tooth. Chuck Goes, whom some of you know from Belmont Yacht Club or from his Race Committee work, volunteered to help LMSRF build a new web site. Chuck’s day job is web hosting and design, along with computer consulting, at his company, Digital Interplay (contact Chuck at [email protected] or at 773.743.9843 if you are in need of help for your own business). We chose the platform of Joomla!, as this web site software allows our volunteers to make changes anywhere, anytime, without needing anything more than an internet connection. Users don’t need any special software to make updates and changes. The goals of the new web site are simple, to make it easier to navigate (check), make it easier to maintain by assigning committee chairs the pages they are responsible for maintaining (check, check), add a bit of fun with links to Maritime Museums and Lighthouses (check), but most importantly to make it easier for you to get what you need (big check). Examples of this last one are that you will find applications for Grants-In-Aid and the Hall of Fame on the web site, along with the requirements of both programs. With over 60 pages of information, we hope you find it informative, helpful and will help your club and/or foster your own sailing.

CCA GAM Issue 16 The Newsletter of the Cruising Club of America Spring 2011 Awards Dinner at New York Yacht Club Blue Water Medal Blue Water Medal To reward an example of meritorious seamanship and adventure upon the sea, displayed by an amateur selected from all national ities, that might otherwise go unrecognized. The prestigious 2010 Blue Water Medal has been awarded to Australian Alex Whitworth Alex Alex Whitworth for a circumnavigation of the world via the Northwest Passage West to East. The first Blue Water Medal was awarded in 1923 and it is given “for a most meritorious example of seamanship, the recipient to be selected from among the amateurs of all the nations.” The award was presented on March 4, 2011 by CCA Commodore Sheila McCurdy during the Annual Awards Dinner at the New York Yacht Club. Whitworth was born in an air raid shelter on the island of Malta in 1942 and spent most of his childhood near Manchester, England, or wherever his father was stationed at the time. His father, Alexander Whitworth, a Royal Navy pilot, taught him to sail at a young age. At nineteen, Whitworth also joined the Royal Navy and became an Observer on carrier-based Sea Vixen aircraft until 1965. In 1966, Whitworth emigrated to Australia and joined Adastra Aerial Surveys where he worked both full and part time until 1975. In 1974, he received a B.A. (Honors) in Political Science from Melbourne University and in 1982 an M.B.A. from the University of New South Wales. In 1993, Whitworth and his partner Hilary Yerbury purchased the sailboat Berrimilla, a Brolga 33 designed by Australian Peter Joubert.

  • Luxury Yacht Interiors, 1870-1920 As a Reflection of Gilded Age Social Status
Luxury Yacht Interiors, 1870-1920 as a Reflection of Gilded Age Social Status Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By M. Lynn Barnes, M.A. Graduate Program in Textiles and Clothing The Ohio State University 2010 Dissertation Committee: Professor Patricia A. Cunningham, Adviser Professor David Steigerwald Professor Susie Zavotka Copyright by M. Lynn Barnes, M.A. 2010 Abstract This dissertation is based on six leading families in the United States, their mansions and their yachts. They experienced status through consumption of luxury goods, especially in decorating their homes. The thesis of this study is that it appears that yacht owners borrowed interior design ideas of their homes to decorate the interiors of their yachts. Their purpose was to enhance and maintain a presentation of status while at sea. It is assumed that yacht interiors from 1870 to 1920 were an extension of house interiors, reflecting the owner’s status, specifically in the use of textiles. The luxury yachts were extravagant symbols of the wealth, taste, and social power of their owners and were paraded as a statement of social status. The consumption of luxury products and an overt demonstration of leisure were part of the lifestyle that Gilded Age industrials and financiers strove to obtain. Luxury yachts were used as a tool, either through sport, cruising or extravagant entertaining, to promote the apparent well-being of the family. The three eras of yachting during the Gilded Age were: schooner-yachts, auxiliary-yachts and steamer yachts.
