INTRODUCTION In spite of the utilitarian tendencies of the present age, it is fortunately no longer necessary to argue in behalf of sport; even the busiest of busy Americans have at last learned the neces- sity for a certain amount of relaxation and rec- reation, and that the best way to these lies in the pursuit of some form of outdoor sport. While each has its stanch adherents, who pro- claim its superiority to all others, the sport of yachting can perhaps show as much to its credit as any. As a means to perfect physical development, one great point in all sports, it has the advantage of being followed outdoors in the bracing atmos- phere of the sea; and while it involves severe physical labor and at times actual hardships, it fits its devotees to withstand and enjoy both. In the matter of competition, the salt and savor of all sport, yachting opens a wide and varied field. In the following pages, gathered from voluminous notes of early travel, I have tried to give a faithful account of life in India, as well as of the sights and scenes visited by me, with my husband, before the days of railroad travel. It is well known that the introduction of the railroad into India has in no sense affected the life of the people, and has only very slightly modified the general appearance of the country. India is still what it was in the Vfedic period, a land of peasant classes she ; still invokes, as did the ancient Aryans in the Rig Vfeda, the “ Khe- tra-pati,” or the divinity of the soil, for blessings on the land. The Hindoo to-day lives, as did his forefathers, close to the heart of Na- ture, deifying the mountains, streams, woods, and lakes, while the sun, moon, stars, fire, water, earth, air, sky, and corn are his high- est deities. -

Subsequently BYSTANDER has been cherished as the beautiful yacht that she is: a remarkably untampered-with survivor from another age, exuding authenticity and atmosphere while still offering all that one would expect of a motor yacht of her length; a wonderful size that, depending on experience, requires as few crew as one desires - maybe even none. With her after accommodation reinstated following the J-Class tender days, she continues to offer stately comfort for six guests in four cabins, and to turn heads in Riviera anchorages. But authenticity can sometimes come at a cost, and BYSTANDER OF MAN, whilst in commission, is nevertheless in need of a refit. -
