Recommended Division Assignments for Classic Racing Under CRF Recommended Division Assignments for Classic Racing under CRF Produced by the CYOA Technical Committee The CYOA Technical Committee has released 2020 Classic Yacht Racing Guidelines, a document that provides recommendations to Organizing Authorities (OA’s) planning to conduct races under the CRF rating rule. Part 2 of these recommendations states that “Yachts shall be assigned to divisions based on their original design date when they have been equipped and built with methods and materials consistent with that original design or that are appropriate for their division. Variations from original equipment, materials and methods may be accepted at the discretion of the OA, and may also be addressed via CRF rating formulae and factors.” Section 2.2 of these recommendations goes on to state that “Yachts shall be grouped into divisions based on the following guidelines,” and describes these divisions as follows: Vintage: Yachts designed before January 1, 1950 and built, maintained, and restored with materials and methods consistent with the original design. Classic: Yachts designed on or after January 1, 1950 whose rudders are attached to the trailing edge of the keel with at least one pivot point on the sternpost, and that are rated by CRF with Keel Type 5 or Type 6. Modern Classic: Yachts designed on or after January 1, 1950 and typically before January 1, 1975, whose rudders are separated from the trailing edge of the keel and that are rated by CRF as Keel Type 3 or Type 4. Spirit of Tradition: Yachts typically designed on or after January 1, 1975 whose rudders are separated from the trailing edge of the keel and that are rated by CRF as Keel Type 1,2,3,or 4, and whose design embodies an appreciation of classic yacht or traditional workboat shapes and aesthetics. There are no restrictions on rigging, equipment, or construction materials and methods for Spirit of Tradition (SoT) yachts. The Technical Committee has carefully reviewed the characteristics of all of the yachts that had been issued CRF certificates, and using these definitions as guidelines, has assigned each yacht to the division that they found most appropriate. Recognizing that individual OA’s may have their own criteria for making division and class assignments, and that they do so at their sole discretion, the Technical Committee offers the following division assignment list as a resource that may be helpful to OA’s in making those choices. All yachts receive a CYOA Division assignment when applying for a certificate. The division designation is listed on the CRF certificate. Note that yachts not listed in the following, but that do have 2020 certificates, will be added to this master list as time permits. Some (but not all) OA’s have construction material requirements for their entries. Yachts holding valid CRF certificates that are constructed of fiberglass have a ‘G’ suffix added to their division code, and may be scored in the same class as wooden boats (as in the case of wooden and fiberglass IOD’s) at the discretion on the OA. Note that there are yachts with valid CRF certificates that were not found to have an appropriate fit within any of the above divisions. These yachts are identified as ‘Other’, with an ‘O’ designation. Their entries may be accepted by OA’s and assigned to classes that suit their event, at their sole discretion. On the following list, the division assignments are indicated as follows: V= Vintage, C= Classic, MC= Modern Classic, and SoT= Spirit of Tradition. Within this framework, yachts with gaff headed mains and/or schooner rigs are identified with the following subdivision designations: G&S V, G&S C G&S MC, G&S SoT, and G&S C (catboats). It is important to note that most of the assignment choices made by participating Technical Committee members have been unanimous, and that most of the few that were not showed a clear consensus, if not unanimity. The handful of unusually difficult choices that elicited more variety in opinion have been decided via simple majority, and are highlighted ‘M’. • Convergent Evolution of Boats with Sails A
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Convergent Evolution of Boats with Sails A. Bejan1*, L. Ferber2 & S. Lorente3 This article unveils the geometric characteristics of boats with sails of many sizes, covering the range 102–105 kg. Data from one hundred boat models are collected and tabulated. The data show distinct trends of convergent evolution across the entire range of sizes, namely: (i) the proportionality between beam and draft, (ii) the proportionality between overall boat length and beam, and (iii) the proportionality between mast height and overall boat length. The review shows that the geometric aspect ratios (i)–(iii) are predictable from the physics of evolution toward architectures that ofer greater fow access through the medium. Nature impresses us with images, changes and tendencies that repeat themselves innumerable times even though “similar observations” are not identical to each other. In science, we recognize each ubiquitous tendency as a distinct phenomenon. Over the centuries, our predecessors have summarized each distinct phenomenon with its own law of physics, which then serves as a ‘frst principle’ in the edifce of science. A principle is a ‘frst principle’ when it cannot be deduced from other frst principles. Tis aspect of organization in science is illustrated by the evolution of thermodynamics to its current state1,2. For example, 150 years ago the transformation of potential energy into kinetic energy and the conservation of “caloric” were fused into one statement—the frst law of thermodynamics—which now serves as a frst-principle in physics. It was the same with another distinct tendency in nature: everything fows (by itself) from high to low.

  • Portsmouth Number List 2019
Portsmouth Number List 2019 The RYA Portsmouth Yardstick Scheme is provided to enable clubs to allow boats of different classes to race against each other fairly. The RYA actively encourages clubs to adjust handicaps where classes are either under or over performing compared to the number being used. The Portsmouth Yardstick list combines the Portsmouth numbers with class configuration and the total number of races returned to the RYA in the annual return. This additional data has been provided to help clubs achieve the stated aims of the Portsmouth Yardstick system and make adjustments to Portsmouth Numbers where necessary. Clubs using the PN list should be aware that the list is based on the typical performance of each boat across a variety of clubs and locations. Experimental numbers are based on fewer returns and are to be used as a guide for clubs to allocate as a starting number before reviewing and adjusting where necessary. The list of experimental Portsmouth Numbers will be periodically reviewed by the RYA and is based on data received via PY Online. Users of the PY scheme are reminded that all Portsmouth Numbers published by the RYA should be regarded as a guide only. The RYA list is not definitive and clubs should adjust where necessary. • Pursuit Schedules
    Pursuit Schedule To find the actual race duration, check at the bottom of the column you use. Shorter Each class sails for a time in proportion to its Portsmouth Number (PN). Pursuit Race Timings In the Classes column, find the slowest boat racing, and trace along the coloured stripe until it turns down into a column of the same colour. This is the column to use for timings. (If the slow boat is not on a coloured stripe, use one higher up the page.) Give the warning signal and start the 5 minute countdown sequence Shorter on the stopwatch. When the countdown reaches zero, start the first class in the column; then work down the column, starting each class in the race as the watch shows the number of minutes given. PN range Classes time sailing Boat's Finish the race when the watch shows the figure at the bottom of the column. 1441 - 1454 RS Tera Sport 50.5 1 0 1369 - 1383 Mirror 48.0 1 0 2.5 1355 - 1368 Gull, Topper 47.5 1 0.0 0.5 3.0 1326 - 1340 Laser Pico 46.5 1 0.0 1.0 1.5 4.0 1240 - 1254 RS Feva XL 43.5 1 0.0 3.0 4.0 4.5 7.0 1197 - 1211 Bosun, Comet 42.0 1 0.0 1.5 4.5 5.5 6.0 8.5 1183 - 1196 Byte, Miracle 41.5 0.0 0.5 2.0 5.0 6.0 6.5 9.0 1 1169 - 1182 Comet Duo 41.0 0.0 0.5 1.0 2.5 5.5 6.5 7.0 9.5 1 1154 - 1168 Lightning 368, Comet Versa 40.5 0.0 0.5 1.0 1.5 3.0 6.0 7.0 7.5 10.0 1 1140 - 1153 Europe, Solo, Laser Radial 40.0 0.0 0.5 1.0 1.5 2.0 3.5 6.5 7.5 8.0 10.5 1 1126 - 1139 Streaker, GP14 39.5 0.0 0.5 1.0 1.5 2.0 2.5 4.0 7.0 8.0 8.5 11.0 1 1111 - 1125 (Laser) 2000, Enterprise 39.0 0.0 0.5 1.0 1.5 2.0 2.5 3.0 4.5 7.5 8.5 9.0 11.5
