The Jibsheet For the latest info... THE JIBSHEET MILWAUKEE COMMUNITY SAILING CENTER www.sailingcenter.org Fall 2012 The 2013 US Disabled Sailing Championship comes to MCSC Milwaukee Community Sailing Center has been selected to host the 2013 US Disabled Sailing Championship by US Sailing. This event is the national championship for disabled sailors and will be held on the Great Lakes for the first time September 5-8, 2013. Any sailor with a disability including quadriplegics, paraplegics and amputees, as well as individuals with multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, polio and ALS can compete. In this series, rather than PHRF rating the boats, each sailor is given a rating based on the severity of his or her respective disability. Ratings are given on a scale of one to seven, one being the most severe and seven being the least severe. The Championship will bring in approximately 50 competitors including paralympic medalists. The four-day event will include a racing clinic on Thursday, three races on Friday and Saturday, with two final races and awards ceremony on Sunday. MCSC will partner will many Milwaukee Bay area boat yards, marinas and sport fishermen for powerboats and other resources needed for the athletes, coaches and support teams. The local regatta co-chairs are the husband and wife team of Helen “Cookie” Mueller and John Archibald. Local sailor and Paraolympian Jon Ruf (2008 bronze medalist) is also serving on the host committee. US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics Para- lympic Coach Betsy Alison will conduct the clinic. The Championship will feature racing in three fleets: the single-handed 2.4mR, double-handed Ideal-18 and the open three-person Sonar keelboat. In the 2.4mR class sailors will compete for the Judd Goldman Trophy. The Ideal-18 class will try to take home the Chandler Hovey Trophy. The triple-handed division will compete in Sonar kneel boats for the Gene Hinkel Trophy. MCSC has had an active Adaptive Sail Program since its earliest seasons, averaging 700 participants in recent years. MCSC is preparing its facilities to host the event by refurbishing its two dockside hoyer lifts and constructing a new pedestrian friendly entry way. The US Disabled Sailing Championship will be a big undertaking for MCSC that will take a lot of fundraising effort and vol- unteer hours. If you would like to help us stage a successful regatta, please let us know by calling MCSC or sending a mes- sage to [email protected]. From The Helm I am so happy to have joined the staff at MCSC as we move forward on many new and exciting fronts. On the ground, the Board of Directors approved a 10 year Capital Improvement Plan. This year the big project was the new entry way. Next year we plan to upgrade the dock house area (yes, we’ll add some shade!). On the water we’re adding more 420’s to our fleet and hosting a national championship regatta. Inside our building we’re doing more year round programming through fall and winter classes, as well as new ideas from the Ambassadors, to add more value to your annual membership. I look forward to many new adventures with the crew at MCSC. Volunteers Make For Smooth Sailing Anyone who has gone through a basic sailing class at MCSC knows their instructors are sail enthusiasts who love to share their knowledge of the sport. Once out on the water, though, it’s the volunteer instructors who ride along that first week and make those lessons come to life. MCSC could not accomplish what it does without the support of a team of volunteer instructors. Besides gently remind- ing about the how-to’s of sailing as they ride along with the students, they model the “community spirit” that makes MCSC such a special place. Many of these volunteers also share their passion on the weekends at Spinnaker Club Satur- days and Racing Sundays.

  • To My Friends in the UK I Seem to Have Promised Steve and Simon That I Would Write an Article on Tuning a Sonar for Your Website
To My Friends in the UK I seem to have promised Steve and Simon that I would write an article on tuning a Sonar for your website. Since “tuning” alone is not enough to be useful, here are some of my thoughts on a number of factors that may improve upwind performance. I hope you find at least some of this helpful. Further, in an effort to counteract the current wave of American tribalism, I welcome any requests for clarification, or other discussion, either on your website forum or by email to [email protected]. Sheeting and Steering-Mainsheet and jib sheet trim are the most critical controls. In moderate conditions mainsheet wants to be trimmed so the upper leech telltale stalls about half the time. In light air you may want it to flow most of the time to maximize speed and get the keel working. In very heavy air you may not be able to keep it from flowing full time, which also helps drive through waves. Traveler should be adjusted so boom is on the centerline unless you’re overpowered. Every small puff opens the main leech and requires an immediate trim to restore the leech to its critical setting. Every lull requires an ease. Jib should be sheeted so all three luff telltales break at the same time but jib upper leech telltale should absolutely never stall. We do not cleat the jib sheet while sailing upwind, but always work to perfect its trim. In very light air I like to heel the boat to give some shape to the sails.
