TEN LITHUANIA A STRUGGLE FOR JUSTICE AND TRUTH IN THE LAND OF MY FOREFATHERS N JUNE 19, 1991, I landed at Riga International Airport on my way Oto Vilnius, the capital of newly independent Lithuania. I was full of curiosity and anticipation regarding the upcoming week that I was going to spend in the ancestral home of my forefathers. Along with a group of members of the Knesset (the Israeli parliament) and representatives of world Jewish organizations, I had been invited to attend the dedication of an impressive new monument at Ponar (Paneriai in Lithuanian), the site of the mass murder of the Jews of Vilnius. Approximately 70,000 Jews had been murdered there during the years 1941–1944, making it one of the largest sites of Jewish murder during the Holocaust, outside the death camps. As an extremely proud Litvak (Jew of Lithuanian origin), I was natu- rally very pleased to have the opportunity to come to Lithuania so soon after the fall of Communism, but there was also a personal element to my anticipation. My namesake, my great- uncle Efraim Zar, and his fam- ily had been murdered in Vilnius, and I hoped, during the trip, to learn the details of their fate, about which we knew almost nothing. There were several articles on my grandfather’s family in a memorial volume, 99780230617308ts11.indd780230617308ts11.indd 9955 99/21/2009/21/2009 11:55:2511:55:25 AMAM 96 OPERATION LAST CHANCE published in the sixties, dedicated to their shtetl, Ligmiyan, among other towns, which mentioned that his brother Efraim had been murdered at Ponar, but we had no details or corroboration of this information, which was apparently based on hearsay.

  • Ostropol – a Brief Jewish History
1 Ostropol – a brief Jewish history Neville Lamdan © 1793 Map showing Ostropol and Stara Konstantinov The town of Ostropol, in the region of Volhynia, is said to have been founded in 1576 by a Ruthenian (Ukrainian) prince, Constantine Basil Ostrog (1526 1608).i However, the name of the place, sounding like “Austro-pol(is)” [Austro-city], may suggest that it was established earlier by “Austrians”, coming from nearby Galicia (“ear-marked” in green on the map) or further to the west. Be that as it may, Prince Constantine Ostrog was one of the most powerful men of his day in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. At the height of his career, he served as the (military) Marshal of Volhynia and Voivode (civil governor) of the important Kiev Voivodship. He owned vast lands throughout the area, allegedly comprising some 100 towns and 1,300 villages.2 In the 1560’s, he built an impressive castle, around which the town of Stara Konstantinov, bearing his name, grew. He certainly had it in his power to develop Ostropol, on the Sluch River, a decade later. Prince Constantine Basil Ostrog - putative founder of Ostropol In view of its strategic location, Ostropol was frequently the target of marauding Tatar and Cossak bands, requiring it to develop its own defensives. By 1619, the town was fortified and 23 villages lay in its domain. In 1648, it found itself in the midst of the upheavals instigated by Cossacks, ostensibly trying to wrest their independence from the Poles. In June 1849, a Polish general succeeded in driving sizeable Cossack bands out of the towns of Kryvonosenka, Krasilov and Stara Konstantinov and bottling them up in the castle at Ostropol, where they put up fierce resistance.

Breslov (also Bratslav, also spelled Breslev) is a branch of Hasidic Judaism founded by Rebbe Nachman of Breslov (1772–1810) a great-grandson of the Baal Shem Tov, founder of Hasidism. Its adherents strive to develop an intense, joyous relationship with God and receive guidance toward this goal from the teachings of Rebbe Nachman. The movement has had no central, living leader for the past 200 years, as Rebbe Nachman did not designate a successor. As such, they are sometimes referred to as the טויטע חסידיו (the "Dead Hasidim"), since they have never had another formal Rebbe since Nachman's death. However, certain groups and communities under the Breslov banner refer to their leaders as "Rebbe". The movement weathered strong opposition from virtually all other Hasidic movements in Ukraine throughout the nineteenth century, yet at the same time experienced tremendous growth in numbers of followers from Ukraine, White Russia, Lithuania and Poland.

LIGHTS OF OUR RIGHTEOUS TZADDIKIM בעזרת ה ' יתבר A Tzaddik, or righteous person , makes everyone else appear righteous before Hashem by advocating for them and finding their merits. Kedushas Levi, Parshas Noach (Bereishis 7:1) BO _ CHASSIDUS ON THE PARSHA + Dvar Torah As the Jewish people were preparing to leave Egypt, Moshe pointed out to them, “This day you are leaving in the month of springtime ( aviv ).” His intention was to show them the kindness of Hashem in that He chose for them a time of temperate weather to set out on their journey. These words, Rav Levi Yitzchok comments, also have a deeper meaning. The Zohar explains that the different ways words are arranged according to the aleph -bais symbolize the different aspects of divine providence. A series of words sometimes appears in alphabetical order, the first starting with an aleph , the second with a bais , and so forth. This arrangement symbolizes divine mercy. Sometimes, a series will appear in reverse alphabetical order, called tashrak , the first starting with a tav , the second with a shin , and so forth. This symbolizes strict justice. There is a dispute in the Gemora (Rosh HaShana 10b) regarding when the future Redemption will take place. One opinion is that it will take place in Nissan . The other is that it will take place in Tishrei . According to the Zohar , we can say that the question is whether the Jewish people will be redeemed because they will have earned it or whether the Redemption will be une arned, an act of divine mercy.

LIGHTS OF OUR RIGHTEOUS TZADDIKIM בעזרת ה יתבר ' ב עז רת A Tzaddik, or righteous person, makes everyone else appear righteous before Hashem by advocating for them and finding their merits. Kedushas Levi, Parshas Noach (Bereishis 7:1) BALAK _ CHASSIDUS ON THE PARSHA + Dvar Torah Torah and Business How good are your tents, O Yaakov, your dwellings, O Yisrael (24:5). This is the famous blessing that Hashem placed in the mouth of Bilaam regarding the Jewish people. Why is the residence of the Jewish people considered a tent when they are addressed as Yaakov and a dwelling place when they are addressed as Yisrael? We can see an allusion here, explains Rav Levi Yitzchok, to the proper relationship of a Jew to his Torah learning and to his business affairs. Yisrael is a higher level than Yaakov, as is well-known. Therefore, the name Yisrael is used when speaking about Torah and the name Yaakov when speaking about business. Since tents are temporary dwellings, Yaakov is being told to make his business the subordinate part of his life, and since dwellings places are permanent, Yisrael is being told to make Torah learning the anchor of his existence, as the Mishnah states (Avos 1:15), “Appoint times for Torah study.” n Story For the first few years after his marriage, Rav Levi Yitzchok and his wife lived in Levertov in the home of his father-in-law Reb Yisrael Peretz, a wealthy businessman who provided for all their needs so that Rav Levi Yitzchok could sit and learn Torah undisturbed.

  • Let's Look at the Following Scenarios
On June 2, 2010, Armando Galarraga, 28 pitched what seemed to be a perfect game, a feat only achieved twenty times in Major League Baseball's 130 year history. However, on the very last play of the game, umpire Jim Joyce, 65, mistakenly called the runner safe at first base, ruining the perfect game. After the game, understanding the mistake he had made and the implications to Galarraga, with tears in his eyes, Joyce went over to Galarraga and apologized, admitting his mistake. Galarraga graciously accepted his apology saying "Nobody's perfect. Everybody's human. " They are currently writing a book together titled "Nobody's Perfect." R. Yosef D. Solovetichik was known for his intellectual integrity when delivering a shiur (lecture). On one particular occasion, he spent the bulk of a two and half hour shiur developing a particular idea. Many questions were asked by the students during that shiur and after the shiur, R. Soloveitchik summoned one of the students and told him "you were right and I was wrong. Tomorrow we will restudy the topic based on the question you raised." Memories of a Giant pg. 325 Admitting a mistake is not easy, and requires a certain degree of self-sacrifice that can be humiliating. Sometimes we have to admit that we are wrong even when it is questionable whether or not there was an actual error. Admitting to such an error may be the simplest solution to a problem, but may create negative consequences. Let's look at the following scenarios Michael worked very hard to prepare for the presentation in his history class.
