Rav Chaim Kanievsky shlita asked as NOCHI AND AVIVA follows - How could the performance of a mitzva - the Akeida - be the cause for Avrohom LIPINS to lose his wife Sorah? Why didn’t the performance of the mitzva protect him? Rav Chaim explained with the following principle. If it has been decreed that a person should live at a specific moment, then a dangerous situation cannot harm him if he is DILEMMA performing a mitzva. However, i f it has been decreed that it is time for a person to pass Now Avrohom was old, well on away, the performance of a mitzva will not prevent that decree from being implemented. his years, and Hashem blessed Therefore, Avrohom was not protected by the fulfillment of the mitzva of the Akeida Avrohom with everything. • Ostropol – a Brief Jewish History
1 Ostropol – a brief Jewish history Neville Lamdan © 1793 Map showing Ostropol and Stara Konstantinov The town of Ostropol, in the region of Volhynia, is said to have been founded in 1576 by a Ruthenian (Ukrainian) prince, Constantine Basil Ostrog (1526 1608).i However, the name of the place, sounding like “Austro-pol(is)” [Austro-city], may suggest that it was established earlier by “Austrians”, coming from nearby Galicia (“ear-marked” in green on the map) or further to the west. Be that as it may, Prince Constantine Ostrog was one of the most powerful men of his day in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. At the height of his career, he served as the (military) Marshal of Volhynia and Voivode (civil governor) of the important Kiev Voivodship. He owned vast lands throughout the area, allegedly comprising some 100 towns and 1,300 villages.2 In the 1560’s, he built an impressive castle, around which the town of Stara Konstantinov, bearing his name, grew. He certainly had it in his power to develop Ostropol, on the Sluch River, a decade later. Prince Constantine Basil Ostrog - putative founder of Ostropol In view of its strategic location, Ostropol was frequently the target of marauding Tatar and Cossak bands, requiring it to develop its own defensives. By 1619, the town was fortified and 23 villages lay in its domain. In 1648, it found itself in the midst of the upheavals instigated by Cossacks, ostensibly trying to wrest their independence from the Poles. In June 1849, a Polish general succeeded in driving sizeable Cossack bands out of the towns of Kryvonosenka, Krasilov and Stara Konstantinov and bottling them up in the castle at Ostropol, where they put up fierce resistance.

Apostates and More, Part 2 Apostates and More, Part 2 Marc B. Shapiro Continued from here 1. Another apostate was Rabbi Nehemiah ben Jacob ha-Kohen of Ferrara, who was an important supporter of R. Moses Hayyim Luzzatto during the controversy about him.[1]Here is the the final page of the haskamah he wrote in 1729 for R. Aviad Sar Shalom Basilea’s Emunat Hakhamim. R. Isaac Lampronte, in a halakhic discussion in hisPahad Yitzhak, refers to Nehemiah, but not by name.[2] He calls him .In R .אחד מן החכמים רך בשנים אשר אחרי כן הבאיש ריחו כנודע Hananel Nepi and R. Mordechai Samuel Ghirondi, Toldot Gedolei Yisrael (Trieste, 1853), p. 229, they write about Obviously, “Ishmaelite” is a .שאח”כ נעשה ישמעאלי :Nehemiah code word for Christian.[3] The story reported by Samuel David Luzzatto is that Nehemiah used to go to prostitutes, and when the rabbis found out about this they removed the rabbinate from him. Too embarrassed to remain in the Jewish community, Nehemiah apostatized.[4] Cecil Roth cites another Italian source that Nehemiah converted so he could marry a Christian woman. Unfortunately, his son and three daughters apostatized together with him (his wife had apparently already died).[5] Another apostate who should be mentioned is Michael Solomon Alexander (1799-1844), first Anglican bishop in Jerusalem. Before his apostasy, Alexander was a rabbi.[6] Rabbi Abraham Romano of Tunis also became an apostate. He converted at the end of the seventeenth century when R. Meir Lombrozo was appointed a dayan in his place. After Romano converted, he became well known as a Islamic preacher, and after his death his tomb was venerated by Muslims.

Sturm All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT KNOWING WHEN A HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTION IS IN TROUBLE by Pamela S. Sturm This study investigates factors that measure the institutional viability of higher education organizations. The purpose of investigating these measures is to provide higher education officials with a means to predict the likelihood of the closure of a higher education institution. In this way, these viability measures can be used by administrators as a warning system for corrective action to ensure the continued viability of their institutions.

  • The Lithuanian Jewish Community of Telšiai
The Lithuanian Jewish Community of Telšiai By Philip S. Shapiro1 Introduction This work had its genesis in an initiative of the “Alka” Samogitian Museum, which has undertaken projects to recover for Lithuanians the true history of the Jews who lived side-by-side with their ancestors. Several years ago, the Museum received a copy of the 500-plus-page “yizkor” (memorial) book for the Jewish community of Telšiai,2 which was printed in 1984.3 The yizkor book is a collection of facts and personal memories of those who had lived in Telšiai before or at the beginning of the Second World War. Most of the articles are written in Hebrew or Yiddish, but the Museum was determined to unlock the information that the book contained. Without any external prompting, the Museum embarked upon an ambitious project to create a Lithuanian version of The Telshe Book. As part of that project, the Museum organized this conference to discuss The Telshe Book and the Jewish community of Telšiai. This project is of great importance to Lithuania. Since Jews constituted about half of the population of most towns in provincial Lithuania in the 19th Century, a Lithuanian translation of the book will not only give Lithuanian readers a view of Jewish life in Telšiai but also a better knowledge of the town’s history, which is our common heritage. The first part of this article discusses my grandfather, Dov Ber Shapiro, who was born in 1883 in Kamajai, in the Rokiškis region, and attended the Telshe Yeshiva before emigrating in 1903 to the United States, where he was known as “Benjamin” Shapiro.
